Chapter 1 / 60

Shadows of a borrowed life

God Crafter

Kai Voss woke to the faint hum of Mana-lamps filtering through a cracked window. His head throbbed. The room was small, cramped, with peeling walls and a single worn bed. This wasn't his apartment back on Earth. No glowing monitor, no half-eaten ramen cups, no stack of notebooks filled with game design ideas and web novel plot notes.

He sat up slowly, breathing shallow. Memories that weren't his pressed against his own. A boy named Kai Voss — sixteen years old, living in the underbelly of Neo-Eden's Tier-7 floating platform. Father lost in a dungeon eruption two years ago. Mother working exhausting shifts at a Mana refinery. A little sister named Mei who looked up to him like he could fix everything. Debt collectors from the Iron Fang Guild circling like vultures. 5,000 Mana Crystals owed, and rising.

The weight of it settled heavy in his chest. *I died. Truck. Rain. Then… here.* He touched his face — younger, sharper features, gray eyes that looked too tired for sixteen. *I took his place. His life. His problems.*

He wasn't sure how he felt about that yet. Not ecstatic. Not cold. Just… determined. He wouldn't waste this second chance by being stupid or cruel. But he also wouldn't let this family — *his* family now — get crushed if he could help it.

A soft knock sounded. "Kai? Are you awake? Breakfast is ready, and the Awakening Ceremony starts soon."

His mother's voice carried quiet hope mixed with exhaustion. Kai swallowed. "Coming, Mom."

He dressed in the only decent uniform he had — faded gray with patched elbows — and stepped into the tiny common area. Mei was already at the table, swinging her legs, spooning nutrient paste. She lit up when she saw him. "Big brother! Today's the day, right? You're going to awaken something amazing and we can pay off the bad men!"

Kai forced a gentle smile and ruffled her hair. "I'll do my best, Mei. Eat up." Inside, the pressure felt real. He had no idea what this world's "Awakening" even fully meant yet. The borrowed memories were fragmented — something about testing for cultivation aptitude first, then Talents. Powerful people got rich. Failures stayed poor. Or worse.

His mother set a bowl in front of him, her hands rough from factory work. "The ceremony will test your aptitude for the old cultivation path first. If you have strong spiritual roots, the sects might recruit you even without a high Talent. Just… be careful, Kai. Whatever happens, we'll face it together."

He nodded, eating slowly. The paste tasted bland, but it filled the stomach. *I need to learn how this world works. No rushing. Observe. Adapt.*

The Central Academy's grand hall was packed with nervous sixteen-year-olds and their families. Holographic banners floated overhead, displaying past success stories of S-rank Talents and legendary cultivators. The air hummed with ambient Mana. Kai stood in line with the others, heart steady but curious.

One by one, students stepped onto the platform.

First came the **Cultivation Aptitude Stone** — a large obsidian monolith etched with glowing runes. A girl with braided hair placed her hand on it. Soft green light bloomed.

"Medium aptitude!" the examiner announced. "Suitable for basic qi gathering. Several minor sects may show interest."

The girl's family cheered.

Then she placed her hand on the awakening stone after a few seconds there was no reaction though she didn't awaken a talent this was better than nothing, She looked relieved.

A boy after her got almost no reaction from the stone. "Low aptitude. Cultivation path not recommended."

The he touched the awakening stone and got no response at all

The boy's shoulders slumped. His parents whispered worriedly about factory jobs.

Another student — confident, from a better-dressed family — triggered bright golden light. "High aptitude! Excellent spiritual roots. The Green Lotus Sect will likely send scouts."

Whispers spread. High aptitude meant slower but potentially deeper power through absorbing heaven-and-earth energy into the dantian, learning rare techniques, commanding elements. It elevated one's very existence over time. But it was slow, resource-heavy, and most people preferred the faster Talent path.

Kai's turn approached. He stepped forward when called.

He placed his palm on the Cultivation Aptitude Stone. A faint, almost reluctant blue glow appeared — weak but present.

"Low-medium aptitude," the examiner said neutrally. "Possible for supplementary cultivation, but not ideal as a primary path. Proceed to Talent Awakening."

No cheers. A few snickers. Kai kept his face calm. *Low-medium. Not useless, but not a golden ticket. Good to know.*

Then came the **Awakening Crystal** — a pulsing blue orb on a pedestal. He pressed his hand against it. Energy rushed through him, sharp and probing.

The crystal flashed dimly.

**Talent: Shadow Walker — F-rank**

Silence for half a second. Then laughter erupted across the hall.

"F-rank? Shadow Walker? That's barely useful for sneaking around alleys!"

"Poor Voss kid. Family's already drowning in debt."

Kai stepped down, ears burning but mind clear. The original soul's despair echoed faintly before fading completely. *Stealth and short shadow movement. Weak starting point, but maybe useful for staying alive.* He didn't panic. He'd read enough stories to suspect that apparent trash talents sometimes hid potential — or could be overcome with effort and luck.

Most students continued receiving their results. A few got E or D-ranks, sparking relieved celebrations from families. One lucky girl awakened a C-rank support Talent, and her parents cried tears of joy — it meant stable guild work, better life. A boy got B-rank combat Talent and was immediately approached by recruiters. The hall buzzed with hope, envy, and disappointment in equal measure.

No one paid much attention to another F-rank failure.

After the ceremony, Kai slipped away from the dispersing crowds into a quiet side alley between academy buildings. The sky above the floating platform was turning dusky orange. He leaned against the wall, processing everything.

*Cultivation for depth and longevity. Talents for speed and specialized power. Most people pick one. Dual path is rare and difficult because resources are scarce.* The borrowed memories and overheard conversations painted a clearer picture. Alchemists who could make supporting pills were highly sought after and monopolized by big factions.

He closed his eyes, breathing steadily. That's when something new happened.

A soft blue interface bloomed in his mind's eye, visible only to him. No dramatic fanfare — just quiet, clean text.

**[Unknown System Interface Detected… Synchronizing with Host Soul…]**

[Creation Authority Awakened.]

[Host: Kai Voss]

[Unranked Creation Authority Online]

[Current Mana Reserves: 18/18]

[Basic Directive]:

You may create anything you can clearly visualize, understand, and supply sufficient Mana for. Begin with simple, stable concepts. Overreach carries risks.

Kai's eyes snapped open. His pulse quickened. *Creation? Like… making things from nothing?* He didn't jump to conclusions or assume he knew the limits. This was new. Dangerous. Powerful. He needed to test carefully.

He focused on something extremely basic — a cup of clean water, imagining the cool liquid, the simple glass shape, nothing magical.

A faint drain tugged at him. A small cup materialized in his hand, water sloshing gently.

It worked.

[ -3 MP]

He drank it. Real. Refreshing. Some of his fatigue eased slightly.

*Okay… it costs Mana. And I just spent 3MP creating a damn glass of water I'll need to recover that 3 MP that he just spent which would take about a minute "hehe still a cheapskate through and through "so he stayed hidden in the alley, thinking slowly. No big experiments yet. He needed to understand the world more — dungeons, guilds, threats, how people actually grew stronger.

But a small spark of hope ignited. With this, maybe he could help his family. Pay debts. Protect Mei and Mom.

Footsteps echoed at the alley entrance. Three older academy students appeared, badges showing minor guild affiliations. The leader smirked at him.

"Voss. F-rank trash. Your family's payment is overdue. Come with us quietly, or we'll make an example out of you right here."

Kai straightened, assessing them. Stronger than him, for now. But he wasn't helpless. And he wasn't going to roll over.

He took a slow breath. *One step at a time.*
