The D-rank dungeon gate registered his classification change on entry scan — D-rank now, the system updating from this morning's breakthrough. The guard looked at the scan. Then at him. Something in the man's expression adjusted slightly.
No comment this time about recommended party size.
Kai walked through.
The dungeon felt different at D-rank.
Not easier immediately. Different. The ambient Mana — which had felt dense and pressured to his E-rank senses — now felt like weather he was suited for. Natural. The pressure that had required conscious management before was simply the atmosphere now.
His Umbral Sense spread outward through the shadow network the moment he cleared the gate and the range had changed — further than before, the detail sharper, the information arriving faster. Every creature in the first two layers registered before he'd taken twenty steps.
He activated Domain of Endless Night.
The dungeon shadows answered immediately.
The thirty-meter radius established itself around him and the creatures within it — Fracture Hounds, a pair of something new he didn't have a name for yet moving near the second layer entrance — became visible to him with a precision that Umbral Sense alone hadn't provided. Not just position. Movement intention. The weight distribution that preceded a charge. The Mana pooling in a limb before an ability activated.
*This is what the Decree does,* he thought. *Inside the domain I don't react to what they do. I respond to what they're about to do.*
He moved toward the new creatures.
They were faster than Fracture Hounds — leaner, low to the ground, the kind of build that prioritized acceleration. They hadn't sensed him yet. Domain of Endless Night had deepened the shadows between them enough that their basic perception couldn't resolve his presence even at fifteen meters.
He raised one blade.
Void Severance.
He'd been conservative about testing it indoors. Out here — open dungeon floor, stone walls, nothing behind the target but rock — he reached for the ability carefully and let it extend outward.
The strike arrived on the nearest creature's flank without traveling there.
No arc. No wind. No visible approach.
One moment the creature was moving. The next it had a wound it hadn't seen coming from a direction that didn't exist.
It spun. Tried to locate the source. The Domain made that impossible — his presence inside the shadow network was indistinguishable from the shadows themselves.
He stepped through Void Step to its blind spot and finished it cleanly.
Four seconds.
The second creature charged the location where the first had fallen. He was already elsewhere — Domain of Endless Night showing him its exact trajectory before it completed the decision to move, the Decree reading the intent as clearly as the action.
He stepped into its path from the side rather than the front.
*Vanishing Root* into the D-rank combat art's opening sequence — the revised version, built for his current speed and output — and the creature's charge met a counter that had been positioned there before the charge was halfway committed.
Two seconds.
He stood in the corridor and looked at both creatures.
Six seconds total. No hits received. No meaningful Mana expenditure. The Domain still running, the reservoir barely touched.
*This isn't a dungeon run anymore,* he thought. *This is practice.*
He moved deeper.
The floor boss on layer three was a creature he hadn't encountered before — larger than the Fracture Sovereign, different build, the kind of Mana signature that suggested an ability set rather than just raw physical power. It registered his entry into the layer and oriented immediately. D-rank peak. Genuinely dangerous to most D-rank Awakeners.
He activated Domain of Endless Night at full extension.
The creature was inside the radius before it finished turning toward him.
Shadow Sovereign's Decree activated within the domain — and the creature's entire Mana structure became readable. He saw the ability it was building toward before the energy had half-formed. A ranged attack, Mana-based, gathering in the foreleg joints before release.
He moved before it fired.
Void Step — behind it, outside the firing angle entirely.
The attack released into empty space.
Domain of Endless Night showed him the recovery cycle — the brief window between ability use and the ability being available again, the creature's attention forward where he'd been, the Mana structure temporarily depleted at the joints.
Void Severance.
Direct to the joint where the ability had originated — the now-depleted and structurally momentarily vulnerable point.
The creature staggered. Made a sound.
Turned,He wasn't there.
He was already in the domain's shadow network — not hiding exactly, just continuous with the darkness, the Decree showing him every micro-adjustment the creature made as it tried to locate him, each small movement of its weight a sentence he could read before it finished speaking.
*It can't find me,* he thought. *And I can see everything it does.*
The rest of the fight was not a fight.
It was a conclusion.
He emerged from the gate in the early evening with a spatial storage artifact full of D-rank cores and a dungeon run that had lasted forty minutes and felt like the most relaxed forty minutes he'd spent since arriving in Neo-Eden.
The checkpoint guard looked at the yield log.
Looked at the floor boss notation.
Looked at Kai.
"You just broke through this morning," the man said. It wasn't quite a statement. More like something he was trying to make sense of by saying it out loud.
"This morning," Kai confirmed.
He collected his log receipt and walked out into the evening city.
Three platforms above, in an apartment with a cork board that had been reorganized three times in the past week, Sera Vane stood with a message in her hand.
From a contact in the lower district. One she'd placed there two weeks ago specifically to watch for anomalies.
The message was four lines.
*Voss family relocated. Tier-5 address attached. Kid cleared a D-rank floor boss solo two weeks ago as E-rank. Checkpoint guard confirmed. Broke through to D-rank this morning. Same kid.*
She read it twice.
Then looked at the cork board.
At the question mark she'd been staring at for weeks.
At the name written below it.
*Kai Voss.*
She'd been patient. She'd built the profile carefully. She'd followed every thread methodically and let the picture develop without forcing it.
The picture was developed.
She picked up her jacket.
*Patient hunting ends,* she thought. *When the prey is moving faster than you can afford to wait.*
She walked out the door.
