Consciousness returned to Justus not with a surge of pain, but in waves of unnatural, soothing warmth.
He lay stretched out on a soft, embroidered leather bench inside a slowly moving carriage.
The violent, bone-chilling howling of the Northwood blizzard was completely gone.
Instead, the steady, rhythmic clatter of wooden wheels echoed against high stone walls.
Justus pushed himself upright, bracing for the agonizing flare of frost-fever and internal strain—but it didn’t come.
His body felt light under a thick wool blanket.
Across from him sat the elderly traveler, his knotwood walking stick resting casually against his knees as he smoked a wooden pipe that wafted the sweet scent of cedar and dried herbs.
“Sleep well, lad?” the old man asked smoothly.
“Daemon…
Lyra…” Justus rasped, his hand instinctively flying to his hip.
Gryphon sat securely leaning against the bench beside him.
“The vial was delivered to Vance within twenty minutes of your surrender,” the old man replied calmly, exhaling a thin ring of smoke.
“A flock of swift-wing couriers ensures my messages travel faster than a horse.
By now, the Frost-Lotus nectar has already cleared the rot from the girl’s lungs and replenished your friend’s core.
They will live.”
Justus let out a long, ragged breath he felt like he had been holding for days.
He leaned back against the carriage wall, looking out the narrow glass window.
They were inside a massive, natural cavern system, but it looked nothing like any cave Justus had ever seen.
Bizarre, glowing crystalline formations lined the arched stone walls, illuminating the path ahead.
But what truly threw Justus off was the air.
“Where are we?” Justus asked, brow furrowing.
“The temperature…”
“Look closer,” the old man said, gesturing toward the window.
Justus pressed his hand against the glass.
As the carriage rolled deeper down the cavern’s winding incline, the stark winter chill fading away outside was replaced by a gentle, blossom-scented breeze that drifted through the cracked window.
Outside, frozen stalactites gave way to lush, green vines and budding cherry blossoms clinging to the subterranean rock faces.
Spring.
A few hundred paces further, the temperature spiked into a golden, humid heat.
The flora shifted rapidly—thick, tropical fern fronds and heavy, sun-kissed foliage stretched upward toward shimmering, heat-radiating crystals in the ceiling.
“The cave…” Justus muttered in disbelief.
“The seasons…
they’re changing as we go deeper.”
“A spatial fracture,” the old man explained gently.
“A boundary zone where the flow of time and natural elements blend together.
The world above operates on strict, linear physical laws.
Here, the world bleeds into something older.”
As the carriage crossed an invisible threshold, the tropical heat abruptly mellowed into a cool, crisp autumn atmosphere.
Crimson and amber leaves drifted through the air, floating past the carriage wheels.
Finally, the carriage emerged from the mouth of the tunnel into an opening so vast it defied reason.
Justus stared out in awe.
Sunlight—actual, warm, natural sunlight—bathed an endless horizon of rolling green hills, pristine rivers, and ancient stone architecture built straight into towering mountainsides.
Above them hung a sky, not of blue, but of shimmering violet and gold aurora light.
It was an entirely self-contained pocket dimension—vibrant, serene, and untamed.
The carriage ground to a smooth halt in front of a modest bamboo pavilion surrounded by a clear, mirror-like lake.
“Step out, Justus,” the old man said, opening the carriage door.
The atmospheric density here was unbelievable; every breath he inhaled felt like cool spring water settling into his drained spiritual core.
His exhausted embers began to flicker back to life naturally.
The old man walked over to a stone tea table near the water’s edge, resting his walking stick against the bench.
“I believe it is time for formal introductions.
You may call me Elder Silas.”
Justus walked over, his red eyes studying the old man intently.
“You knew who I was back at Black Ridge.
Who are you really, Silas?
And what is this place?”
“This is the Elysian Domain,” Silas said, pouring two cups of hot tea.
“A sanctuary preserved outside the reach of the Sovereign armies and Queen’s scouts.
As for who I am…
I am simply a caretaker of ancient truths.”
Silas gestured for Justus to sit.
Justus took the seat across from him, resting Gryphon across his knees.
“Before you can begin to unlock what lies inside you,” Silas began, looking deeply at Justus, “you must understand the vessel you carry.
Tell me, Justus, how do you understand Spiritual Energy?”
Justus paused, recalling the scattered lessons and hard-won combat experience from his journey.
“It’s the force inside us.
People manifest it in different ways—some project fire or lightning, others forge weapons, others heal.”
“Precisely,” Silas nodded approvingly.
“Spiritual Energy is the fundamental architecture of existence, divided into five main branches:”
Elementals: Those who control the natural forces of the world—fire, water, earth, wind, ice, lightning, and gravity.
Forgers: Those who can shape their spiritual energy into solid weapons and tools.
The most powerful Forgers can weave such immense intent into their constructs that the weapon itself develops its own consciousness—much like the blade resting on your lap.
Shifters: Individuals who can transcend human form, transforming their flesh into supernatural or mythical creatures—Dragons, Phoenixes, Seraphs, and ancient beasts.
Mystics (The Technique Path): Those who manipulate space, mind, and reality itself.
Specialized arts like teleportation, barrier creation, illusions, soul manipulation, time-altering techniques, and pocket dimensions like the one we stand in now.
Restorers: Those who manipulate energy to repair—restoring flesh, organs, bones, blood, and even pure spiritual energy.
Though at their absolute peak, high-level Restorers can weaponize their precise energy control to damage souls directly.
Silas leaned forward, his gaze sharpening.
“Those who reach the absolute pinnacle of their path—who master these fundamentals to their maximum limit—are known as Sovereigns, having passed into the Ascendant Stage.”
Justus listened intently, absorbing every word.
“And Queen?
Which path does she belong to?”
“Queen commands multiple paths through sheer, tyrannical force,” Silas said somberly.
“Because Spiritual Energy is a mirror of the soul.
When a cultivator strays into obsession, hatred, or dark ambition, their energy doesn’t ascend—it decays.
It becomes corrupted, leading down the path of Demonization.”
Silas set his tea down and pointed a weathered finger directly at Justus’s chest.
“Which brings us to the elements themselves.
Among the Elementals, Light is universally recognized as the most supreme and devastating aspect in existence.
Why?
It is a divine, untainted force—and in this era, it is held exclusively within the Bright Family.”
Justus raised an eyebrow.
“The Bright Family?”
“The ancient noble houses rule the flow of power across the continents,” Silas explained.
“And leading them is Alexander Bright, the head of the Bright Family.
He is widely acknowledged as the single most powerful spiritual energy user of our time.”
Justus froze mid-sip, his eyes widening.
“Wait…
Alexander Bright?
Most powerful?
I thought the Lords held the absolute ceiling of power.”
“The Lords rule territories through political might and armies,” Silas said, a subtle smile touching his lips.
“Alexander Bright rules through absolute, uncontested dominance.
His mastery over Light energy borders on the godly domain of Aurion himself.
When he steps onto a battlefield, even the Lords bow their heads.”
Justus swallowed hard, digesting the vast scale of the world he had been so blind to.
“If Light belongs to them…
then what about what’s inside me?”
Silas’s expression grew deeply serious.
“Light is divine because it stems from creation,” Silas murmured, leaning closer.
“But Darkness…
true, primal Darkness…
is unheard of in this era.
It is not merely rare, Justus; it is an anomaly that reality itself attempts to reject.
What slumbers inside you is not corruption.
It is pure, untamed Darkness—a power capable of devouring light, space, and souls alike.
It is why you feel that suffocating weight every time you push your limits.
Your body is a human cage trying to contain an abyss.”
Justus stared down at his gloved hands, the silence of the lake wrapping around them.
The sheer reality of what he carried inside him set in—a power completely isolated from the noble families, divine paths, and established laws of the world.
“You have a long way to go, boy,” Silas said, rising from his seat and taking up his knotwood walking stick.
“Your friends are safe.
Your body is recovering.
Rest today.
Drink the tea, let the ambient energy of the Elysian Domain knit your spirit core back together.”
Silas turned his head back over his shoulder with a sharp glance.
“Because starting tomorrow…
the real training begins.”
A lot of new lore was revealed in this chapter, especially about Spiritual Energy, the different paths, and the mysterious Darkness within Justus.
But the biggest thing to remember is this… Justus has finally met someone who understands his power.
And from here on, things are about to get much more interesting.
The real training begins next chapter.
