Thump.
The sound came again.
Chetan stood perfectly still in the darkness of the abandoned warehouse, his fingers tightening around the crowbar he had kept beside him. The others had not heard it. At least, none of them reacted.
That was becoming one of the strangest parts of his new ability.
Before the mutation, silence had simply been silence. Now silence had layers.
There was the faint rustling of fabric whenever someone shifted their weight. The soft movement of air through the broken windows. The distant cries of something moving several streets away. The occasional scrape of metal against concrete as the wind pushed some loose object outside.
And beneath all of it was something else.
A vibration.
Not loud.
Not even particularly strong.
But deliberate.
Thump.
Chetan lowered his gaze toward the concrete floor.
The heartbeat had come from somewhere beneath them.
He waited.
Nothing.
Then—
Thump.
This time he felt it through the soles of his shoes.
His Predator's Perception immediately sharpened.
The warehouse seemed to expand around him.
He could hear Vikram breathing near the entrance. Sameer's heartbeat was heavy and steady. Priya's was slightly faster than normal. Meera was awake too; Chetan could tell from the subtle changes in her breathing.
Nikhil was sitting against one of the walls.
His heartbeat was different.
Too fast.
Then suddenly slower.
Then fast again.
Chetan turned toward him.
"Nikhil."
The young man looked up.
"What?"
"Are you feeling anything?"
Nikhil frowned.
"Like what?"
"Anything unusual."
Nikhil hesitated.
For several seconds he said nothing.
Then he slowly looked down at his hands.
"My fingers are itching."
Sameer glanced over.
"That's all?"
Nikhil shook his head.
"No."
His voice was quieter now.
"I can hear something."
The warehouse became silent.
Meera looked at Chetan.
"What?"
Nikhil closed his eyes.
"Under us."
Nobody spoke.
Chetan walked toward him.
"What do you hear?"
Nikhil swallowed.
"A heartbeat."
Chetan's expression hardened.
"How strong?"
"I don't know."
Nikhil pressed his palm against the concrete floor.
His face changed.
"It's not just a heartbeat."
"What does that mean?" Vikram asked.
Nikhil opened his eyes.
"It sounds like something is breathing."
A cold silence settled over the group.
Ananya pulled her knees closer to her chest.
"Is it coming here?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Chetan crouched down and placed his palm against the floor.
He felt nothing.
Then his system flickered.
[Anomalous mutation energy detected.]
[Source: Underground.]
[Distance: Unknown.]
[Mutation activity increasing.]
The words remained for several seconds before fading.
Chetan slowly stood.
"We're leaving."
Vikram frowned.
"Now?"
"Yes."
"It's the middle of the night."
"I know."
Vikram looked toward the dark warehouse entrance.
"Whatever is underground might not even know we're here."
Chetan looked at him.
"It knows."
That was enough.
Nobody argued.
They had already seen what happened at Pashan.
The creatures underground had not behaved like random animals. They had moved through the tunnels as though something had disturbed them. Then something larger had passed beneath the city, and every smaller creature had fled.
Whatever that thing was, Chetan had no intention of waiting around to find out whether it considered them prey.
They began gathering their supplies.
The warehouse had offered temporary shelter, but now it felt like a trap.
Vikram distributed the remaining water bottles while Priya checked the backpack containing their medical supplies. Sameer moved toward the entrance and carefully looked outside.
Meera approached Chetan.
"You really think we should leave?"
"Yes."
"Because of the heartbeat?"
"Because of everything."
Chetan looked around the warehouse.
"The creatures beneath Pashan. The sinkhole. The military markings. The map. Whatever is spreading through the underground."
His eyes moved toward the floor.
"None of it is isolated."
Meera remained quiet.
"You think the tunnels connect?"
"I don't know."
"That's not a reassuring answer."
"I don't have a reassuring answer."
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"At least you're honest."
Chetan almost smiled back.
Almost.
Then he heard something.
A scrape.
He immediately raised one hand.
Everyone froze.
"What?" Sameer whispered.
Chetan didn't answer.
His head turned toward the northern wall.
There.
A faint vibration.
Something was moving.
Not underneath the center of the warehouse.
Closer to the wall.
Chetan slowly approached.
The wall itself looked ordinary—old concrete, cracked in several places, covered with patches of moisture.
He placed his ear against it.
Nothing.
Then—
Scrrrrch.
Something scraped against the other side.
Ananya whispered, "What was that?"
Chetan stepped back.
"Move."
Everyone immediately retreated.
A thin crack appeared near the bottom of the wall.
Then another.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Sameer raised his hardened arms.
Priya's palms began glowing faintly with heat.
Meera positioned herself beside Chetan.
The crack widened.
But nothing emerged.
Instead, something thin pushed through.
A root.
Chetan stared at it.
It was dark.
Almost black.
It slowly twisted through the crack before stopping.
Another root emerged beside it.
Then another.
"Those weren't here earlier," Meera whispered.
Chetan nodded.
He crouched.
The roots were not ordinary.
Their surface pulsed faintly.
Not like a heartbeat.
More like fluid moving through veins.
He reached toward one.
"Chetan," Meera warned.
"I know."
He hesitated.
Then touched it.
The Golden Touch activated.
For a moment nothing happened.
Then the system displayed:
[Target detected.]
[Mutated biological material.]
[Current Quality: D.]
[Potential enhancement available.]
Chetan stared.
A root.
Not an animal scale.
Not muscle.
Not bone.
A root.
His pulse quickened.
He withdrew his hand.
The system disappeared.
"What is it?" Vikram asked.
"Something mutated."
"Can you enhance it?"
"I don't know."
Chetan touched it again.
[Quality Enhancement activated.]
The root trembled.
A faint golden glow travelled along its surface.
The material tightened.
The dark outer layer became denser.
Then—
[Enhancement successful.]
[Quality increased: D → C.]
Chetan pulled his hand away.
The root immediately stopped moving.
Everyone stared.
Priya stepped closer.
"It reacted to you."
"I know."
"Can you do it again?"
Chetan shook his head.
"Not yet."
The root suddenly contracted.
Then it pulled itself back through the crack.
Chetan stood.
"That's enough."
They left the warehouse.
The streets outside were almost completely dark.
Pune had become a different city.
The familiar roads were still there, but the life that had once filled them was gone. Cars sat abandoned in intersections. Storefronts had been smashed open. Traffic signals blinked uselessly above empty streets.
Occasionally, they found signs that other survivors had passed through.
A blanket tied around a railing.
Empty water containers.
A burned vehicle.
A crude warning painted on a wall.
DON'T GO NORTH.
Another wall had only two words.
THEY HEAR.
Nobody commented on either.
They continued west.
Lonavala was still their destination.
The road ahead would not be easy, but staying in Pune was becoming increasingly dangerous.
Chetan walked near the front with Meera.
Behind them came Vikram and Sameer.
Priya stayed near Ananya, while Nikhil walked at the rear.
The young man's movements had changed.
Chetan noticed it immediately.
Nikhil no longer walked like an ordinary person.
His steps were quieter.
His shoulders remained slightly lowered.
His head constantly shifted from side to side.
Listening.
Smelling.
Watching.
At one point he stopped.
Chetan noticed.
"What?"
Nikhil stared toward an alley.
"Nothing."
"You stopped."
"I heard something."
Sameer turned.
"Creature?"
Nikhil shook his head.
"People."
Chetan's eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
Nikhil listened.
"Three."
"Where?"
"Left."
The group moved toward the opposite side of the road.
Thirty seconds later, three figures emerged from the alley.
They were carrying bags.
One held a metal pipe.
Another had a kitchen knife.
The third had a pistol.
The three strangers froze when they saw Chetan's group.
Nobody moved.
Then the man holding the pistol raised it slightly.
Vikram immediately stepped forward.
"We don't want trouble."
The gunman laughed nervously.
"Neither do we."
His eyes moved over their supplies.
Chetan noticed.
Predator's Perception picked up the man's heartbeat.
Fast.
Fear mixed with aggression.
The man wasn't confident.
He was desperate.
Chetan kept his crowbar lowered.
"Then keep walking."
The gunman stared at him.
"You have food."
"So do you."
"Not enough."
"Neither do we."
The two groups remained frozen.
Then one of the other men whispered something.
The gunman glanced toward him.
That tiny distraction was enough for Chetan to notice the pistol wasn't aimed properly.
He could disarm him.
But before Chetan could decide whether it was necessary, a distant scream echoed through the streets.
Everyone turned.
The scream ended abruptly.
A second sound followed.
A low growl.
The three strangers immediately ran.
Chetan watched them disappear.
"Should we go?" Ananya whispered.
"Yes."
They moved faster.
The growl came again.
Closer.
Nikhil suddenly grabbed his own throat.
Chetan stopped.
"Nikhil?"
Nikhil breathed heavily.
"Something's wrong."
"What?"
"I can smell it."
"What does it smell like?"
Nikhil looked toward the darkness.
"Blood."
Sameer raised his arms.
"How close?"
Nikhil's pupils narrowed.
"Very."
A shadow moved across a rooftop.
Chetan's perception exploded.
"DOWN!"
Everyone dropped.
Something flew over them.
It struck the road behind them with enough force to crack the asphalt.
Sameer immediately charged.
His hardened fist slammed into the creature.
The impact sent it rolling.
Priya released a concentrated burst of heat.
The creature twisted away.
Chetan finally saw it clearly.
It was not one of the underground creatures.
It was something new.
Its body was long and narrow, almost like a giant monitor lizard, but its limbs were too long and its torso too thin. A ridge of pale growths ran along its spine. Its mouth opened sideways, revealing multiple layers of small teeth.
Its eyes reflected the faint moonlight.
Chetan tightened his grip.
The creature lunged at him.
His body moved before his mind finished processing the attack.
He stepped sideways.
The jaws snapped shut inches from his shoulder.
Chetan drove the crowbar into the creature's neck.
The blow cracked one of its pale growths.
The creature recoiled.
Meera screamed.
A concentrated sonic blast struck it from the side.
The creature staggered.
Sameer followed with another punch.
This time bone broke.
Priya heated the creature's flank.
It screamed.
Nikhil attacked from behind.
His claws sank into its back.
For a second, his expression changed.
There was satisfaction in his eyes.
Too much satisfaction.
"Nikhil!" Chetan shouted.
Nikhil didn't stop.
He ripped his claws sideways.
Blood sprayed across the road.
The creature collapsed.
Nikhil stood over it, breathing heavily.
His claws remained extended.
Chetan walked toward him.
"Nikhil."
No response.
"Nikhil."
The young man finally looked up.
His face was covered in blood.
"I..."
He looked at his hands.
The claws slowly retracted.
"I didn't..."
His breathing became uneven.
"I wanted to stop."
Chetan stared at him.
"Did you?"
Nikhil's eyes filled with fear.
"I don't know."
Chetan didn't answer.
That frightened him more than the creature had.
He had seen Nikhil change physically.
But this was different.
Physical mutation could be measured.
Psychological changes were harder to see.
And far more dangerous.
Chetan crouched beside the dead creature.
The system activated.
[Mutated organism detected.]
[Quality: C.]
He touched one of its hardened spinal plates.
[Quality Enhancement available.]
Chetan hesitated.
Then activated Golden Touch.
A golden shimmer spread across the plate.
[Enhancement successful.]
[Quality increased: C → B.]
The plate became noticeably denser.
Chetan removed it and placed it inside his bag.
Meera watched.
"Another material."
"Yes."
"You're collecting quite a lot."
"Useful things are becoming harder to find."
She looked at the dead creature.
"Do you think we can eventually make armor?"
"Maybe."
"From these?"
"That's the idea."
Before she could answer, Chetan froze.
He heard something.
Not ahead.
Not behind.
Below.
A vibration travelled through the road.
Thump.
Chetan's eyes widened.
Another vibration.
Thump.
The asphalt beneath them trembled.
Everyone felt it this time.
Ananya looked around.
"What was that?"
Chetan stared at the road.
He couldn't see anything.
But Predator's Perception was picking up movement.
Something was traveling beneath them.
Not directly underneath.
Farther away.
Moving in the same direction they were.
West.
Toward Lonavala.
Chetan's expression became grim.
The underground thing wasn't chasing them.
At least, he didn't think it was.
It was moving.
And whatever route it was taking appeared to follow the same western corridor they intended to use.
He looked toward the distant darkness beyond Pune.
For the first time, Lonavala no longer felt like a destination.
It felt like a point on a map between them and something else.
Something that had already begun moving.
"We leave the road," Chetan said.
Vikram looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because whatever is underground is heading west."
Silence.
Sameer looked toward the road.
"How do you know?"
Chetan didn't answer.
He couldn't explain Predator's Perception.
He simply pointed toward a narrower side street.
"We take the high ground where possible. Avoid tunnels, drains, basements, and enclosed structures."
Vikram studied him for a moment.
Then nodded.
"Everyone heard him. Move."
They began walking again.
Behind them, beneath the ruined road, something moved through the darkness.
The city remained silent.
But far below the surface, a network of roots, tunnels, bones, and mutated life continued to spread.
And somewhere beneath the earth, something enormous opened its eyes.
Not toward Pune.
Not toward the survivors.
Toward the west.
Toward Lonavala.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
The sound disappeared into the darkness.
But Chetan kept walking.
He had the uncomfortable feeling that whatever was happening beneath the city had only just begun.
