The sensation began quietly. There was no sudden explosion of power, no blinding flash, and no dramatic transformation that would have made Chetan immediately understand what was happening. Instead, a strange warmth spread slowly through his body, beginning somewhere around his chest before moving into his shoulders, arms, stomach, and legs. It wasn't pleasant, but neither was it unbearable. It felt as though his entire body had become aware of itself at once, every muscle and joint suddenly receiving attention from something operating beneath the level of conscious thought. Chetan stood in the darkness of his apartment, completely still, waiting for the sensation to reveal its purpose. His heartbeat gradually accelerated, and a faint ringing filled his ears. Then the golden interface appeared again.
[Genetic adaptation has begun.]
[Adaptation progress: 4.0%]
[Evaluating biological compatibility...]
[Evaluating environmental pressure...]
[Evaluating accumulated mutation energy...]
[Potential evolutionary traits detected.]
Chetan's expression tightened. "What kind of traits?"
The system gave no immediate answer.
Instead, the warmth intensified.
He gripped the edge of the table.
For several seconds, he wondered whether he had made a terrible mistake by repeatedly exposing himself to mutated creatures. The idea that killing them could somehow be changing his body had seemed useful when he first noticed the increase in adaptation potential. Now that the process had actually begun, however, the reality felt considerably more dangerous. He had no idea what "genetic adaptation" meant in practical terms. His body could become stronger, faster, more resistant—or something completely unexpected could happen. The creatures outside had evolved claws, hardened skin, enlarged muscles, distorted bones, and altered instincts. Chetan didn't want any of those things happening to him.
The heat suddenly disappeared.
He remained frozen for another few seconds.
Nothing happened.
Then the interface changed.
[Initial adaptation complete.]
[Genetic adaptation progress: 4.2%]
[Physical attributes stabilized.]
[No visible mutation detected.]
Chetan slowly released the table.
He looked at his arms.
Nothing appeared different.
He touched his face, checked his teeth, examined his fingers, and even looked at himself in the dark reflection of the window. Everything seemed normal.
"That's it?"
No answer came.
He wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or disappointed.
He decided to test himself.
Chetan performed several basic exercises he had done countless times before. Push-ups first. Usually, after twenty or thirty, his arms would begin to feel heavy. This time, he reached thirty without much difficulty. At fifty, he still felt relatively comfortable. By the time he reached seventy, his breathing had finally become heavier.
He stopped and stared at the floor.
That wasn't normal.
Chetan stood and tried something else.
He jumped.
The result was subtle but unmistakable.
He jumped higher.
Not dramatically higher, but enough that he immediately noticed the difference.
His body felt lighter.
His movements were smoother.
He clenched his fist.
There was more strength behind it.
Chetan's expression slowly changed.
"So that's what adaptation does."
He spent the next hour carefully testing himself without pushing too far. His endurance had improved slightly, his reaction speed seemed better, and his physical strength had increased enough to make ordinary movements feel easier. Nothing extraordinary had happened, but the improvement was real.
More importantly, there was no sign that he was becoming less human.
At least not yet.
Chetan returned to his notebook.
Under the section titled Genetic Adaptation, he wrote:
Initial adaptation occurred at 4%.
No visible physical mutation.
Strength, endurance, and reaction speed appear improved.
Cause likely connected to mutation energy.
He paused.
Then added:
Further adaptation unknown.
He closed the notebook.
The next morning, he decided to leave Pune.
Not permanently.
Not yet.
He wanted to travel toward the outskirts and determine whether the situation was localized or widespread. More importantly, he needed fuel. His motorcycle would become useless if he couldn't replenish its tank.
He packed his supplies and checked the handgun.
Seven bullets remained after he found two additional rounds in the pharmacy's storage area.
He wasn't comfortable relying on it, but it was better than nothing.
The crowbar was now C-rank.
The knife was C-rank.
He also carried a small axe he had enhanced from F to E.
His backpack was heavier than before, but Chetan had learned how quickly circumstances could change. Being slightly uncomfortable was preferable to being unprepared.
He rode toward the western edge of the city.
The further he traveled, the more obvious the collapse became.
Traffic lights were dead.
Vehicles were abandoned everywhere.
Several fuel stations had been surrounded by barricades.
At one petrol pump, dozens of people had gathered.
Chetan slowed the motorcycle but didn't stop.
The crowd was too large.
Arguments were erupting around the pumps, and several people were carrying weapons.
A gunshot suddenly rang out.
Everyone scattered.
Chetan immediately accelerated.
He wasn't interested in finding out who had fired.
A few kilometers later, the roads became quieter.
He eventually reached a small settlement on the outskirts.
Several houses had been converted into makeshift shelters. People were moving between them carrying water containers and food.
A wooden barricade had been erected across the road.
Two men stood behind it.
"Stop!"
Chetan slowed down.
One of them raised a spear.
"Who are you?"
"Just passing through."
"Where are you going?"
"Looking for fuel."
The men exchanged glances.
"You can trade."
"For what?"
"Food. Medicine. Batteries. Weapons."
Chetan considered it.
"What do you need?"
The older man looked at his motorcycle.
"Medicine."
Chetan opened his backpack and removed a small packet of antibiotics.
The man's eyes immediately changed.
"How much?"
"Two fuel containers."
The man hesitated.
"One."
"Two."
"One and a half."
Chetan almost smiled.
Even during the apocalypse, people negotiated.
"Fine."
The trade was completed.
Chetan filled his containers and prepared to leave.
Before he did, the younger guard approached.
"You shouldn't travel alone."
Chetan looked at him.
"Why?"
"There are things in the fields."
"What things?"
The young man lowered his voice.
"Wild boars."
Chetan frowned.
"Boars?"
"Mutated ones."
That was enough.
He thanked them and left.
The road ahead became increasingly rural.
Fields stretched across both sides, but many crops had been trampled. Birds flew overhead in unusually large groups, and occasionally Chetan saw animals moving between the vegetation.
He kept his speed low.
After nearly twenty minutes, he heard something strike the motorcycle.
Chetan immediately braked.
A rock lay on the road.
Another flew from the field.
He looked toward the vegetation.
Nothing.
Then the grass moved.
Chetan reached for the crowbar.
Three creatures emerged.
They resembled wild boars, but they were much larger than normal. Their bodies were covered with thick patches of hardened tissue, and their tusks had grown into long curved weapons.
One was nearly the size of a small car.
Chetan's instincts screamed at him to turn around.
Instead, he accelerated.
The motorcycle surged forward.
The largest boar charged.
Chetan swerved.
The creature narrowly missed him.
He turned the motorcycle around and watched the animals.
The largest one was already turning.
"You're fast."
Chetan accelerated again.
This time he didn't run.
He aimed directly toward the creature.
At the last second, he jumped off the motorcycle.
The boar collided with the bike.
Metal twisted.
The motorcycle flew several meters.
Chetan rolled across the dirt.
Pain shot through his shoulder.
He immediately got up.
The creature was recovering.
Chetan grabbed the crowbar.
The boar charged.
He moved sideways and struck its head.
The impact barely slowed it.
He struck again.
Nothing.
The creature turned faster than expected.
Its tusk cut across Chetan's jacket.
He jumped backward.
His heart hammered.
The creature was too strong.
He needed another strategy.
Chetan noticed a narrow ditch beside the road.
He moved toward it.
The boar followed.
He waited until it charged.
Then he jumped over the ditch.
The creature wasn't able to stop.
Its front legs entered the ditch, causing its body to tip forward.
Chetan attacked.
He struck the exposed side of its neck.
Again.
Again.
The creature screamed and struggled.
Chetan kept attacking until the movement stopped.
The other two boars fled into the fields.
Chetan stood over the body.
[Mutated organism defeated.]
[Mutation energy detected.]
[Adaptation potential increased.]
[Current adaptation: 4.8%]
He stared at the number.
It was increasing.
He was certain now.
Killing mutated creatures was accelerating his adaptation.
But there was something else.
He felt stronger than he had that morning.
The fight had been easier than it should have been.
Chetan looked toward the damaged motorcycle.
The front section was badly bent.
He walked over and placed his hand against it.
[Quality Enhancement activated.]
[Target: Motorcycle]
[Current Quality: C]
[Enhancement attempt initiated.]
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
[Enhancement failed.]
Again.
Failed.
Again.
Failed.
Chetan sighed.
"Come on."
He placed both hands against the motorcycle.
Golden light spread across the metal.
The machine trembled.
[Enhancement successful.]
[Quality increased: C → B.]
The damaged parts straightened.
The bent frame repaired itself.
The engine began humming.
Chetan stared in disbelief.
"B-rank."
This was the highest-quality object he had personally created.
He started the motorcycle.
The engine sounded smoother than before.
Much smoother.
He accelerated slightly.
The response was immediate.
Chetan smiled.
Then he noticed something strange.
The motorcycle wasn't merely repaired.
It felt faster.
Much faster.
He slowed down.
Golden Touch wasn't simply repairing objects when their quality increased.
It was improving their fundamental characteristics.
That realization was more important than the motorcycle itself.
A C-rank weapon might become dramatically stronger at B-rank.
A B-rank weapon might become something entirely different at A-rank.
And if he ever managed to reach S-rank...
Chetan didn't even want to imagine it.
He continued toward the outskirts.
By afternoon, he found an abandoned fuel station.
The pumps were damaged, but several underground storage tanks were still intact.
Chetan inspected the area carefully before approaching.
There were bodies nearby.
Not recent.
Some had been partially consumed.
He didn't stay long.
He found a manual fuel transfer pump inside a storage room and began filling his containers.
Halfway through, he heard movement.
Chetan stopped.
Something was inside the station building.
He picked up the crowbar.
A shadow moved behind the broken glass.
Then a woman stepped out.
She was holding a metal pipe.
She looked exhausted.
"Don't."
Chetan stopped.
"I don't want trouble."
"Neither do I."
Her clothes were dusty, and there was dried blood on her sleeve.
Chetan lowered the crowbar.
"Are you alone?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
She shook her head.
"Nothing good."
Chetan didn't press.
Instead, he pointed toward the road.
"I'm leaving soon."
The woman glanced at his motorcycle.
"You're traveling alone?"
"Yes."
"That's stupid."
Chetan almost laughed.
"I've been told that."
She studied him for several seconds.
Then something behind them growled.
Both turned.
A low sound came from the station's storage area.
The woman tightened her grip on the pipe.
Chetan raised his crowbar.
The creature emerged slowly.
It had once been a leopard.
Now it was nearly twice the size of one.
Its fur had turned dark and patchy, while several ridges of bone protruded along its spine. Its eyes were unnaturally bright.
Chetan's instincts immediately warned him that this creature was different from the others.
It was watching.
Learning.
The leopard crouched.
Then vanished.
Chetan barely saw it move.
He raised the crowbar just in time.
The impact threw him backward.
The woman screamed and swung the pipe.
The leopard dodged.
Chetan rolled across the ground and grabbed the knife.
The creature turned toward the woman.
Chetan reacted immediately.
He threw the knife.
The blade struck its shoulder.
The leopard roared.
Chetan charged.
The woman struck its side with the pipe.
The creature staggered.
Chetan swung the crowbar into its skull.
Once.
Twice.
The leopard collapsed.
Neither of them moved for several seconds.
Finally, the woman lowered the pipe.
"Thank you."
Chetan retrieved the knife.
"You helped."
She looked at him.
"I don't know your name."
"Chetan."
She hesitated.
"Meera."
It was the first time Chetan had met another survivor outside the city who had not immediately tried to threaten him.
He looked at the dead leopard.
Then at Meera.
"You have an ability?"
She nodded.
"I can manipulate sound."
Chetan raised an eyebrow.
"Sound?"
She touched the pipe.
"I can make sounds louder or quieter. Sometimes I can concentrate vibrations."
That explained the unusual force behind her attack.
"Useful."
"It isn't strong."
"Still useful."
Meera gave him a tired smile.
"Where are you going?"
"Back toward Pune."
She looked surprised.
"You're going back?"
"For now."
She glanced toward the ruined road.
"Can I come with you?"
Chetan hesitated.
He had spent the past few days deliberately avoiding groups.
But he had also begun to understand the limitations of traveling alone.
A second pair of eyes could notice danger he missed.
Someone who possessed an ability could make survival easier.
And if he continued to travel alone, sooner or later he would encounter something he couldn't defeat.
Chetan looked at the damaged motorcycle.
Then at Meera.
"Do you know how to ride?"
"Yes."
"Then let's go."
Meera climbed onto the motorcycle behind him.
As they left the abandoned fuel station, neither of them noticed the dark shape watching them from the distant trees.
It remained hidden until the motorcycle disappeared from sight.
Then it turned and moved deeper into the forest.
Meanwhile, Chetan's interface quietly displayed a new message.
[Adaptation progress: 5.2%.]
[Additional evolutionary pathway detected.]
[Condition not yet satisfied.]
Chetan didn't see it.
He was too busy watching the road ahead.
The world was becoming stranger every day.
And for the first time since the apocalypse began, he wasn't facing it completely alone.
