# Chapter 1
“Avada Kedavra!”
The chilling shout echoed across the battlefield.
The curse had been cast by none other than the snake-faced monster once known as Tom Marvolo Riddle—Lord Voldemort himself.
A flash of emerald light tore through the darkness, rushing directly toward Harry Potter.
The Boy-Who-Lived.
The Chosen One.
The unwanted centerpiece of a war that had consumed an entire generation.
Harry did not attempt to dodge.
There was no point.
He already knew what had to happen.
For years, Voldemort had unknowingly tethered a fragment of his soul to Harry, turning him into the final Horcrux.
The last anchor binding the Dark Lord to life.
Once Harry was gone, Voldemort would finally become mortal.
Killable.
The war had been lost long before this moment.
Looking back, Harry could trace the beginning of the disaster to the night Voldemort returned during the Triwizard Tournament.
When he had emerged from the graveyard and tried to warn everyone, the Ministry had dismissed him as a frightened child desperate for attention.
Cornelius Fudge’s refusal to accept the truth had handed Voldemort exactly what he needed.
Time.
Time to rebuild.
Time to gather allies.
Time to free loyal Death Eaters from Azkaban while shifting the blame onto Sirius Black.
Time to reclaim the Dementors and recruit giants to his cause.
Time to eliminate anyone capable of standing against him.
By the time Fudge finally witnessed Voldemort with his own eyes in the Ministry Atrium, watching him duel Albus Dumbledore, the damage had already been done.
Only then had the Minister admitted the truth.
Only then had he acknowledged Voldemort’s return.
The public outrage that followed destroyed Fudge’s political career almost overnight, while Dumbledore was restored to every position that had previously been stripped from him.
But titles changed nothing.
Voldemort had already secured his advantage.
Within weeks, tragedy struck again.
Amelia Bones, Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, was murdered.
Her niece Susan met the same fate.
Emmeline Vance, one of the Order’s most dedicated members, was lost as well.
Rufus Scrimgeour proved little better than his predecessor.
Though more willing to fight, he never managed to turn the tide.
Then Dumbledore died.
A Killing Curse hurled the old wizard from Hogwarts’ Astronomy Tower, though Harry later learned the Headmaster had already been dying from a powerful curse connected to one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes.
Without Dumbledore standing in his way, Voldemort moved swiftly.
The Ministry fell.
A puppet government replaced the old one.
And the real nightmare began.
Muggle-borns and blood traitors disappeared by the hundreds.
Official records called them relocation centers.
Everyone else called them what they truly were.
Death camps.
Long before that happened, Harry, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley had gone into hiding.
Their mission was simple in theory.
Destroy the Horcruxes.
In practice, it became a nightmare.
Months passed with little progress.
They located the locket and stole it from Dolores Umbridge inside the Ministry itself, but every success came at an exhausting cost.
Ron had grown increasingly frustrated.
He expected quick answers, quick victories, and a quick end to the hunt.
Reality offered none of those things.
Eventually, late in October, he abandoned them.
He claimed it was because they weren’t making progress.
Harry never truly believed that.
Hunger, fear, and hopelessness had worn him down until he could no longer continue.
His departure hurt, but after the initial disappointment faded, Harry and Hermione found themselves thinking more clearly.
Without constant arguments and negativity, they began piecing together clues that had previously escaped them.
For the first time, real progress became possible.
And in the quiet loneliness of their journey, they grew closer to one another.
Everything changed again the day after Christmas.
While searching a frozen forest, Harry discovered the Sword of Gryffindor hidden beneath the icy surface of a secluded pond.
Ignoring the bitter cold, he plunged into the water.
The experience nearly killed him.
Then, as if by fate, Ron suddenly reappeared and dragged him back to safety.
From that moment onward, something shifted.
The bond Harry had been building with Hermione slowly faded.
Old feelings resurfaced.
His thoughts drifted back toward Ginny Weasley.
Hermione’s attention returned to Ron.
The strange closeness they had shared dissolved as though it had never existed.
Still, despite everything, the trio continued their hunt.
One by one, Voldemort’s Horcruxes fell.
The final piece was Ravenclaw’s lost diadem, hidden within Hogwarts itself.
With Luna Lovegood’s help, they found it in the Room of Requirement and destroyed it only hours before the battle reached its climax.
By then, Voldemort’s forces had breached Hogwarts’ defenses.
Death Eaters flooded the castle grounds.
Students, teachers, and fighters from every corner of magical Britain made their last stand.
Then came the ceasefire.
Voldemort called for Harry.
Personally.
Moments later, Ron approached him.
The redhead was sobbing.
His face was pale.
And the words that left his mouth shattered what little hope Harry still possessed.
“Hermione’s dead.”
A Killing Curse.
That’s all it had taken.
With every Horcrux destroyed, Harry immediately understood what he had to do.
There was no alternative.
No escape.
No miracle.
He left the castle without hesitation and walked toward the Forbidden Forest.
He never looked back.
Had he done so, he might have noticed the smile tugging at Ron Weasley’s lips.
Crossing the battlefield, Harry passed the fallen.
Students.
Professors.
Death Eaters.
Friends.
Enemies.
In death, none of those distinctions seemed to matter anymore.
Before entering the forest’s depths, he activated the Resurrection Stone.
Ghostly figures emerged from the darkness.
His parents.
Sirius.
Remus.
Only then did Harry learn that both Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks had died during the battle.
Strangely, Hermione never appeared among them.
There were questions he should have asked.
Many questions.
But grief and exhaustion clouded his thoughts.
He never considered it.
Eventually, he stepped into a clearing where Voldemort waited, surrounded by his most loyal followers.
Silence settled over the gathering.
For a brief moment, nobody moved.
Then green light flashed once more.
Pain exploded through Harry’s body.
His strength vanished.
The world tilted.
And darkness swallowed everything.
“Get up, you idiot!”
A harsh male voice shattered the void.
Harry frowned.
Why could he hear anything?
Wasn’t he supposed to be dead?
The ground beneath him certainly didn’t feel like the cold earth of the Forbidden Forest.
Instead, he found himself lying on something soft.
A carpet.
Slowly opening his eyes, he stared at thick pale-blue wool fibers stretching before him.
It was surprisingly comfortable.
“Harry James!” the voice barked again.
“On your feet!”
The sound came from somewhere behind him.
Confused, Harry rolled onto his stomach and pushed himself upright.
As he turned, he spotted a young-looking man standing several feet away.
The stranger possessed dark blond hair and sharp features.
He wore elegant white robes threaded with subtle strands of shimmering silk.
His expression was one of complete irritation.
“W-where am I?” Harry asked.
“I thought I was dead.”
“You are,” the man replied dryly.
“And you aren’t.”
Harry blinked.
“That doesn’t explain anything.”
“No. It doesn’t.”
The stranger turned away.
“Follow me.”
Before Harry could ask another question, the man began walking.
After a brief hesitation, Harry climbed to his feet and instinctively searched for his wand.
Then he reached for his glasses.
His hand froze.
Frowning, he realized he could see perfectly clearly.
Without them.
