The memory unfolded in the Wizengamot chamber like a blade being drawn in slow motion.

Silver light rippled across the stone walls as younger Harry’s voice filled the air, steady and cold.

That summer it became a torture chamber.

Aunt Marge had arrived with her bulldog Ripper like a conquering general.

The dog was supposed to be a prize-winning champion.

All Harry saw was a slobbering weapon on four legs, trained to lunge at the sight of him.

The scars on his calves still pulled tight whenever the beast growled.

Dinner was the worst part.

He had cooked it.

He was not allowed to eat much of it.

Marge sat at the head of the table, her bulk pressing against the wood, brandy glass in one hand, the other waving like she was conducting an orchestra of cruelty.

Vernon and Petunia laughed on cue.

Harry kept his eyes on his plate and his magic locked down so hard his teeth ached.

Then she started on his parents.

“Your father was a drunk,” she boomed, voice thick with drink and spite.

“Should’ve been locked away long before you were born.

And your mother?

Pathetic.

Couldn’t even breed anything worth keeping.

Look at you.

Skinny little freak.

Your whole lot should’ve been put down at birth.”

The words landed like hammer blows.

Something ancient and furious cracked inside Harry’s chest.

Magic surged up his spine, hot and uncontrolled, and for once he didn’t try to stop it.

Marge’s eyes bulged.

Her body swelled.

The buttons on her dress popped one by one.

She rose from the chair, arms and legs kicking uselessly as she inflated into a grotesque balloon.

Ripper went berserk, barking and snapping at the air as his mistress floated toward the ceiling, then drifted out the open window into the night like some monstrous party decoration.

Silence crashed down.

Vernon’s face turned the color of raw liver.

He lunged.

Harry ran.

He took the stairs two at a time, heart slamming against his ribs.

Trunk.

Cloak.

Hedwig’s cage.

The few pathetic Muggle things he owned.

He shoved the window open and sent Hedwig into the dark with a hoarse whisper.

“Find me later.” Then he dragged the trunk down the stairs and out the front door before Vernon could reach him.

The night air hit like freedom and terror at once.

He had no plan.

Only the certainty that if he stayed, Vernon would beat him bloody and the Ministry would snap his wand.

He would lose the only world that had ever felt like his.

In desperation he thrust his wand into the air.

The Knight Bus exploded into existence with a bang that rattled his bones.

Purple, triple-decker, and completely mad.

Stan Shunpike’s cheerful face appeared above him.

“Leaky Cauldron,” Harry managed, hauling his trunk aboard.

The ride was a nightmare of screeching turns and beds that tried to throw him off.

He didn’t care.

Every mile put distance between him and Privet Drive.

By the time the bus deposited him outside the Leaky Cauldron, his legs were shaking but his head was clear.

He had escaped.

For now.

Cornelius Fudge was waiting inside.

The Minister looked flustered but oddly prepared, as if he had known exactly where Harry would run.

“Not in trouble, my boy.

Not at all.

These accidental magic incidents happen.

You’ll stay here for the rest of the summer.

Much safer.

And… well.

Sirius Black escaped Azkaban.

We believe he’s looking for you.

But don’t worry.

We’ll keep you protected.”

Harry nodded, barely hearing.

Relief warred with suspicion.

How had Fudge known he would come here?

And why mention Black like it was an afterthought?

He didn’t argue.

He took the room.

And the next morning he went straight to Gringotts.

The goblins did not smile when he asked to see his accounts.

They never smiled.

But something sharp and interested flickered in their eyes when he invoked his name.

Hours later, Harry sat in a private office while thick ledgers were slammed onto the table.

The truth came out in cold, precise sentences.

Albus Dumbledore had been his Ministry-appointed magical guardian since the night his parents died.

Every member of the Wizengamot in 1981 had known.

Every teacher at Hogwarts had known.

The Daily Prophet had printed it.

Not one of them had told him.

Dumbledore had used that authority to drain the Potter vaults.

“Expenses.” Vague.

Untraceable.

The wills of James and Lily Potter had been sealed by Dumbledore’s power as Chief Warlock.

Their explicit wishes — that Sirius Black become Harry’s guardian, that certain vaults and properties pass to specific people — had been ignored.

Sirius Black.

His godfather.

The man who had sworn the Godfather’s Oath before both his parents and Dumbledore himself.

A magically binding vow older than the Ministry.

And Sirius had been thrown into Azkaban without a trial.

Ordered by Minister Bagnold, Barty Crouch Senior… and Albus Dumbledore.

Harry felt the world tilt.

All this time.

All the isolation.

The Dursleys.

The letters that never came.

The way Dumbledore kept him away from the wizarding world every summer.

It wasn’t protection.

It was control.

Control of the Boy Who Lived.

Control of the Potter fortune.

Control of the weapon they expected him to become.

The goblins provided certified copies of everything.

Harry took the heavy stack of parchment with steady hands even though his insides were shaking.

He had three weeks.

Three weeks of freedom in Diagon Alley.

He read until his eyes burned.

He asked questions the goblins answered with cold precision.

He walked the streets without Dumbledore’s shadow hovering over every step.

He felt something dangerous and new settle in his chest: clarity.

By the time he boarded the Hogwarts Express on the first of September, he was no longer the boy who had fled Privet Drive.

He was something harder.

Draco Malfoy and his two human bookends tried their usual performance before the train even left London.

Harry shut them down with a look and three flat words.

They left.

The compartment settled into the familiar rhythm of friends and chocolate frogs and the countryside sliding past.

For a little while, Harry let himself breathe.

Then the temperature plummeted.

Frost spiderwebbed across the windows.

The lights flickered.

A bone-deep cold sank into Harry’s skin and began to pull.

A Dementor.

He had read about them.

Guards of Azkaban.

Soul-suckers.

Nothing in any book had prepared him for the way the world turned gray, for the way every happy memory was ripped away like old scabs.

His mother’s scream echoed in his ears.

The cupboard under the stairs.

The certainty that he was going to die here, alone, on a train.

The compartment door slid open.

The Dementor drifted inside, hooded and rattling, the air around it thick with despair.

It turned its faceless head toward Harry.

And began to feed.

In the Wizengamot chamber the memory flickered.

Albus Dumbledore sat very still, eyes closed, shoulders curved inward as if the weight of every revelation had finally found him.

Amelia Bones watched the old man with the sharp, satisfied smile of a hunter who had just seen her prey step into the open.

“The boy,” she murmured, voice low enough that only those closest heard, “is more Slytherin than any Slytherin I know.”

She was already thinking about the questions she would ask Minerva McGonagall.

Filius Flitwick.

Pomona Sprout.

Severus Snape.

Rubeus Hagrid.

And especially the man who had once been Chief Warlock.

If young Potter kept talking, Hogwarts itself might not survive what came next.

Back in the memory, the Dementor lowered itself toward Harry, and the cold became everything.
