The argument in the stone antechamber was growing uglier by the second.

“You’re nothing but a liar, Malfoy,” Susan Bones snapped, her voice tight with anger.

“Well, where is he then, Bones?

Your aunt runs the Aurors—has she ever seen Harry Potter?

No one has seen hide nor hair of him since that night.

My father has the Minister of Magic over for dinner regularly, and even he has never laid eyes on the so-called Boy Who Lived.

If it weren’t for that oaf Hagrid spouting drunken stories in the Leaky Cauldron, no one would believe any of it.”

A red-haired boy—another one who had been hunting for Harry Potter on the train—exploded.

“Dumbledore’s seen him!

He’s kept Harry safe from scum like your father!”

Malfoy didn’t miss a beat.

“Perhaps the great Dumbledore dropped him off at your hovel, Weasley.

What’s one more mouth to feed among your tribe?

Does your mother even remember all your names?

Harry Potter isn’t here because he’s dead.

Dead boys don’t come to Hogwarts.”

The words were still hanging in the air when the wall beside them rippled like water and a procession of ghosts swept through—transparent figures in old-fashioned robes, some chatting, some moaning softly.

Several first years screamed.

Even Malfoy took an involuntary step back.

By the time everyone had recovered from the shock, Professor McGonagall had returned, looking as though she had swallowed something extremely sour.

“Form a line,” she ordered.

“Follow me.”

Harry slipped into his public face with practiced ease—shoulders back, expression politely interested, every inch the confident young wizard.

Hermione did her best to match him, though her heart was hammering so hard she was sure the entire castle could hear it.

The difference was obvious.

While the other first years gawked at the enchanted ceiling and the floating candles, Harry and Hermione walked with quiet composure.

They stood out.

They knew it.

And right now, that felt dangerous.

The ancient Sorting Hat sat on a stool at the front of the Great Hall.

It opened its rip in a brim and launched into a song about the four houses.

Hermione barely registered the words.

Her eyes kept flicking to Harry, who stood relaxed beside her as though none of this was new to him.

Sorting began alphabetically.

Hannah Abbott became the first Hufflepuff of the year.

Vincent Crabbe lumbered off to Slytherin amid a ripple of green-trimmed applause.

When Tracey Davis was called, Harry and Hermione exchanged a glance.

Harry should have been next.

When the name after Crabbe wasn’t his, Hermione felt the first cold thread of real fear.

“Granger, Hermione.”

Harry gave her the smallest nod and the gentlest push between her shoulder blades.

She walked to the stool on legs that felt too long and too short at the same time.

The hat barely touched her head before declaring, “Ravenclaw!”

Relief and panic warred inside her as she hurried to the blue-and-bronze table.

Padma Patil joined her a few minutes later, and the two girls shared a quick, nervous smile.

Then McGonagall’s voice rang out, clear and commanding.

“Potter, Harry.”

Silence.

No one moved.

The Great Hall, which had been filled with the low buzz of hundreds of conversations, fell into a sudden, suffocating quiet.

McGonagall frowned at her list and called again, louder this time.

“Potter, Harry.”

Still nothing.

Hermione’s fingers dug into the edge of the Ravenclaw table hard enough to leave crescent marks in the wood.

Beside her, Padma leaned in and whispered, “Why wasn’t his name called earlier?”

“I don’t know,” Hermione whispered back.

“He should have gone before both of us.

I just… I hope he gets into Ravenclaw.

Sorry you got separated from your sister.”

“I’m not,” Padma said firmly.

The sorting continued.

Blaise Zabini was placed in Slytherin.

Only one boy remained standing in the middle of the floor.

McGonagall’s voice was careful now.

“What is your name, young man?”

“Harry Crow, Professor.”

She checked her parchment again, though everyone could see she already knew the answer.

“I don’t appear to have you on my list, Mr.

Crow.”

“My father confirmed my attendance,” Harry said, voice steady.

“There were… special circumstances surrounding my place here.”

Dumbledore rose from the staff table.

The entire hall seemed to hold its breath.

“Perhaps,” the Headmaster said, his voice carrying with deceptive mildness, “I can shed some light on the matter.

I did indeed receive Mr.

Crow’s letter and noted the special circumstances to which he alludes.

Unfortunately, Hogwarts has no charter or accord that permits us to accept a goblin as a student.”

A ripple of confused murmurs swept the hall.

The boy standing alone was clearly not a goblin.

Dumbledore continued, almost kindly.

“If young Harry wishes to attend this school, he must do so under the name his birth parents gave him.

Harry James Potter.”

The silence that followed lasted less than three seconds.

Then the hall erupted.

Shouts, gasps, questions, and outright screams overlapped until the noise became a physical force.

Dumbledore remained standing, a small, satisfied smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

He had forced the boy’s hand in front of everyone.

Once the choice was made publicly, there would be no going back.

He would have until summer to arrange suitable placement for the child.

Everything was falling into place.

McGonagall eventually restored a fragile order with sheer force of presence.

She turned to the lone figure still standing in the middle of the floor.

“Is this true?” she asked, voice low but carrying.

“Are you Harry Potter?”

Harry met her eyes without flinching.

“The Headmaster is well aware,” he said clearly, “that for the last ten years my adoptive father has been Barchoke, Senior Accounts Manager at Gringotts.

And yes—I was once called Harry Potter.”

If the previous explosion had been loud, this one was seismic.

Harry Potter—raised by a goblin?

Calling a goblin father?

McGonagall looked as though the floor had vanished beneath her feet.

When she found her voice again, it was hoarse.

“How is this possible?

I was there the night we left you with your Muggle relatives…”

Hermione watched her friend and saw it happen—the shift.

The public face Harry Crow wore melted away.

In its place stood something colder, sharper, and infinitely more dangerous.

His spine straightened.

His green eyes locked onto McGonagall’s with an intensity that made the Deputy Headmistress actually take a half-step backward.

“And by what right,” Harry asked, voice soft and lethal, “did you participate in that atrocious event, Deputy Headmistress?”

McGonagall’s mouth opened, then closed.

She tried again.

“I was a friend of your mother and father—”

“‘Was’ is the operative word there,” Harry cut across her, the sarcasm so sharp it could have drawn blood.

“Don’t expect any warm greetings should you ever meet them again.

You did a great disservice to House Potter that night—and ignored multiple laws designed to protect children.

Are you quite certain you should be working in a school, Professor?”

The title dripped with contempt.

For several long seconds, no one in the Great Hall seemed capable of drawing breath.

Hermione’s heart was somewhere in her throat.

She could feel every eye in the room fixed on the boy who had just publicly dismantled one of Hogwarts’ most respected professors.

Padma’s hand had found hers under the table and was gripping it tightly.

Harry stood alone in the center of the hall, surrounded by hundreds of witches and wizards, and he looked utterly unafraid.

Dumbledore’s smile had vanished.

And in that moment, Hermione understood something with perfect clarity: whatever plans the Headmaster had made for Harry Potter were already in ruins.

The boy standing before them wasn’t Harry Potter anymore.

He was Harry Crow.

And he had just declared war on the man who thought he could still control him.
