A strange tightness gripped Sylas Vaughn’s heart, as if something precious was quietly slipping away.
Moments later, the car pulled into the Vaughn family estate.
Selena Sinclair exited the car as if she were escaping, slamming the door shut.
It was as if she wanted to banish both Sylas Vaughn and the car from her sight.
Sylas Vaughn remained in the car, watching Selena Sinclair’s retreating figure through the windshield as anxiety began to stir within him.
He had just seen the sorrow and resentment in Selena Sinclair’s eyes as she left—it was as if she had completely lost faith in him.
If that desire to break free was allowed to fester, it would be enough to make him lose control.
“Ma’am, you’re back.”
Seeing Selena Sinclair at the door, the servants hurried forward to greet her, their faces alight with joy.
Selena Sinclair wore a thin jacket and skinny jeans, her hands shoved deep in her pockets.
She read the confusion in the servants’ expressions but didn’t intend to look back.
Her gaze swept past Sylas Vaughn behind her for a fleeting moment before she ignored him and walked straight inside.
In the living room, Laura Morgan was sitting with her legs crossed.
She looked up when she heard a stir at the entrance.
“Well, well.
The runaway heiress flew back on her own?
I knew you couldn’t bear to leave Sylas.
So much talk about divorce, yet here you are, scurrying right back to the Vaughn family.”
Selena Sinclair scanned the living room, taking in Laura Morgan’s sarcastic barbs, but her expression remained placid.
“Honestly, for someone from the prestigious Sinclair Family, you’re showing less and less decorum.
It’s bad enough you don’t attend to your in-laws, but you also throw these spoiled brat tantrums and run away from home.
Hannah is Sylas’s cousin, after all.
What’s the big deal about them taking a photo together?
You’re already Sylas’s wife; you’re going to get jealous of his own cousin?”
Laura talked about the “cousin” as casually as if she were discussing the weather.
Selena sneered inwardly.
‘Things have already gone this far.
Does she need to catch them in the act to finally understand how serious this is?’
Selena Sinclair was in no mood to argue with her, so she simply skirted around behind her and headed for the stairs.
By the time Laura Morgan turned her head, Selena Sinclair was already heading up the stairs.
Laura Morgan’s anger surged as she watched Selena’s retreating back.
Just then, Sylas Vaughn stepped through the door.
“Sylas, just look at this wife of yours!
She’s getting more and more unruly.
She’s out having fun for days before she finally comes back, and she’s completely incorrigible.
Look at her—I said two words to her and she got upset.
She has none of the qualities of a proper wife.
I truly don’t understand why the old man favors her so much.”
Laura Morgan yelled at Sylas, gesturing in the direction Selena had disappeared.
The more she spoke, the more wronged she felt.
Selena could, of course, understand these kinds of veiled insults.
She just couldn’t be bothered to engage with them.
She simply couldn’t be bothered to argue with a woman like Laura Morgan anymore.
It was utterly pointless.
SLAM!
An upstairs door was slammed shut, the sound reverberating through the living room.
“Forget it.
I’d be better off moving back to the old residence.
At least I won’t have to endure such contempt.”
With that, she snatched her purse from the sofa and stormed out.
‘With Selena Sinclair’s attitude, it’s not like living here would be pleasant anyway.’
‘I really thought Selena was going to leave the Vaughn family for good.
That would have been my chance to move Hannah in.’
‘Who knew the little brat would just turn around and come back?’
‘And the first thing she does is give me that sour look.
So ill-bred.’
