For three days, the universe seemed to pause.
Rhys threw himself into the quiet rhythm of his home, using domestic routine as a shield against the creeping dread in his chest. He scrubbed the floors, tended to the garden, cooked elaborate meals, and—most importantly—reconnected with Lira.
That third night, the barrier between them finally dissolved. For the first time in months, they made love. It was slow, reverent, and pure—a gentle, cosmic reaffirmation of their marriage. As Lira slept soundly beside him in the quiet dawn, her starlight skin glowing softly in the dark, Rhys lay awake, breathing a deep, genuine sigh of relief. He felt grounded again. He told himself the nightmare with Vespera was a bizarre, tragic anomaly he could finally put behind him. The world was resetting itself.
Then, at 8:00 AM, the familiar, low rumble of a matte-black luxury sedan echoed down the driveway.
The Uninvited Guest
The front door didn’t just open; Vespera walked in like she held the deed to the entire zip code. Dressed in an immaculate velvet power-suit, her silver pixie cut flawless, her spotted tail flicked lazily behind her as she breezed right past a petrified Rhys into the sunlit kitchen.
“Vespera, no. You need to leave. Right now,” Rhys demanded, his voice tight, standing his ground in the center of the kitchen.
“Oh, quiet down, darling,” she cooed smoothly, slipping onto a barstool at the kitchen island. “Put the kettle on. I like Earl Grey with two drops of honey.”
It was maddening. Through a bizarre cocktail of ingrained domestic habit, shock, and the faint, menacing hum of her contract magic hovering in the air, Rhys found himself moving on autopilot—boiling the water, pouring the tea, and setting out a plate of fresh biscotti on the counter. His mind was racing at a thousand miles an hour. He braced himself for her to grab him, to drag him into the guest room, to demand her tribute.
But Vespera didn’t make a move. She simply crossed her legs, took a delicate sip of her tea, and checked her platinum wristwatch.
“You’re remarkably tense, Omen,” she murmured, an amused, wicked glint in her slitted amber eyes. “Relax. We’re actually waiting on a guest today.”
Rhys’s blood ran cold. “A guest? What are you talking about? Who?”
DING-DONG.
Panic spiked straight to his brain. Before Rhys could move, Vespera glided past him to the foyer and pulled the heavy mahogany door open.
Standing on the porch was a familiar face from the neighborhood. It was Dione—their next-door neighbor. Dione was a stunning, soft-spoken woman with cascading, wave-like cobalt-blue hair. In her youth, she had been a mid-tier atmospheric mage capable of summoning localized rainfall, but now she lived a quiet life as a suburban housewife. She was also, as Rhys well knew, an absolute, swooning fangirl of Lira’s heroic persona, Astraea.
Rhys blinked, utterly bewildered, still expecting some cosmic threat or shadowy assassin to step out from behind the bushes. “Dione? Is everything okay? Did something happen to your garden?”
“Oh... um, hi, Rhys,” Dione stammered softly, her cheeks flushing a faint pink as she stepped into the foyer, clutching her cardigan tightly around her shoulders.
“Come in, dear, don’t be shy,” Vespera purred, closing the door behind her and ushering Dione into the living room.
The three of them sat down—Rhys standing stiffly by the fireplace, Vespera lounging like a queen on the sofa, and Dione perched nervously on the edge of an armchair, her hands fidgeting in her lap.
“Dione here came to me a few days ago regarding her lease extension,” Vespera began, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy as she gestured toward the blushing blue-haired woman. “And during our little chat, she confessed to a rather... tragic domestic situation. It seems her husband has been completely distant. Cold. Neglectful in the bedroom for nearly a year.”
Dione bit her lip, looking down at the carpet, her blue hair veiling her face. “It’s... it’s true. He barely looks at me anymore.”
“So,” Vespera continued, a cruel, triumphant smile spreading across her lips, “I told her I knew a former champion. A generous, deeply attentive man who specializes in helping women in distress. I invited her over to join us today.”
The Trap Tightens
The sheer, absurd insanity of the statement hit Rhys like a physical blow. His jaw dropped.
“Absolute not,” Rhys snapped, his voice dropping an octave, stepping forward with absolute finality. “No. Vespera, this is insane. Dione, I don’t know what she told you, but you need to leave right now. This isn’t happening in my house.”
Vespera didn’t even blink. She casually raised two fingers.
A sudden, sharp pressure flared in Rhys’s chest. The glowing, invisible purple threads of her binding contract flared to life around his heart, locking his spine in place with a crushing, magical weight. Rhys gasped, stumbling back against the mantelpiece, paralyzed from the neck down.
Dione’s eyes widened slightly at the sudden display of magic, but instead of running, a strange, desperate heat flickered in her blue eyes. She stood up from the armchair, taking a shy, hesitant step toward Rhys.
“Rhys... please,” Dione whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of embarrassment and overwhelming desire. “Vespera told me... she told me what you two do. I’ve been so lonely, Rhys. I see you out in the yard every day... I know you’re Astraea’s husband, but I’ve wanted to feel a real man touch me for so long... Please don’t reject me.”
Rhys, trapped in Vespera’s magical vise, looked directly into Dione’s eyes. He didn’t yell. He didn’t sneer. He poured his absolute, raw heart out to her.
“Dione, listen to me,” Rhys pleaded, his voice breaking with genuine, heartbreaking emotion. “I used to be a superhero. My name was Omen. I saved people. I gave up everything—my powers, my body, my entire life—just so I could live in peace and love my wife. This woman... Vespera... she is blackmailing me. She is destroying my life, step by step. You are a good person, Dione. You don’t want to be a piece in her sick game. Please... I am begging you as a neighbor, as a human being... just turn around and walk out that door.”
Silence descended on the living room.
Dione froze, taking in his speech, her breath catching in her throat. For a single, fleeting second, Rhys thought he had reached her moral core. He waited for her to apologize, to turn on Vespera, to leave.
Dione slowly turned her head and looked at Vespera.
Vespera sat on the sofa, leaning her head on her hand, a devilish, pitch-black smile playing on her lips. She didn’t say a word; she just raised a single eyebrow, offering a silent, corrupting invitation.
Dione turned back to Rhys. The hesitation in her eyes was completely gone, replaced by a sudden, terrifying blaze of raw, selfish lust. The image of the noble, tragic former hero standing helpless before her didn’t push her away—it drove her completely over the edge.
“A hero...” Dione breathed, her cheeks flushing a deep scarlet as she reached out, her fingers pressing into Rhys’s chest. “You really are incredible...”
“Dione, no—” Rhys choked out.
She didn’t listen. Dione stepped flush against him, her hands moving with frantic, hungry speed as she began unbuttoning his shirt, her eyes locking onto his scarred, helpless chest with insatiable desire.
Vespera let out a low, purring laugh from the sofa, taking a sip of her tea as Rhys stood bound by magic, able to do nothing but plead in vain as his sanctuary was violated once again.
