His Little Possession

Night settled over the western grounds of Draven Estate like a held breath.

The old hunting lodge stood at the edge of the treeline, a low stone structure with thick walls and limited approaches—exactly the kind of place that looked secure enough to hide a queen, and vulnerable enough to tempt an assassin.

Lantern light glowed behind the shuttered windows.Full novel: His Little Possession — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Four guards stood visibly at the perimeter.

Two more walked the short path to the main track.

It was a picture designed to be read from a distance.

Selene sat inside on a hard wooden bench, wearing dark tactical clothing, her blades within reach.

The mate bond hummed taut between her and Viktor.

He was not inside the lodge.

That was the point.

He waited with the real strike team in the dense pines seventy meters north, close enough to feel every shift in her pulse, far enough that any watcher would believe the queen had finally been separated from her king.

Darius’s voice came soft through the small earpiece.

Movement on the ridge.

Three, possibly four.

They’re taking the bait.

Selene’s fingers flexed around the hilt of her dagger.

“Irina?”

Not yet.

But someone is directing them.

The first attack came sooner than expected and from the wrong angle.

A silenced bolt shattered the side window.

Glass sprayed across the floor.

Selene rolled hard, came up behind the heavy table, and returned fire with the compact pistol Viktor had given her.

Outside, shouts erupted.

The visible guards engaged.

The sound of steel and the wet impact of silver on flesh filled the night.

Then the rear door of the lodge exploded inward.

Lady Irina stepped through the smoke, crimson hair braided tight for combat, silver short-swords in both hands.

Two turned mercenaries flanked her.

Her eyes locked onto Selene with cold recognition.

You should have stayed in the tower, little queen, Irina said.

This ends cleaner if you don’t fight.

Selene rose slowly, blades drawn.

You already tried clean.

It didn’t take.

Irina smiled without warmth.

That was a test.

This is the conclusion.

They collided in the center of the room.

Irina was older, faster, and trained for centuries.

Selene had the bond, raw determination, and the memory of every lesson Viktor had beaten into her body.

Steel rang.

A silver edge scored Selene’s ribs.

She answered by driving her knee into Irina’s thigh and slashing across the other woman’s guard arm.

Blood, dark and ancient, welled.

Outside, the perimeter fight intensified.

Through the bond Selene felt Viktor moving, the controlled violence of his advance.

He was coming.

Irina pressed harder, blades a silver blur.

You are a disruption, she hissed.

A mortal stain on a bloodline that has ruled for nine hundred years.

The old houses will never accept you.

Neither will the ones still loyal to pure blood.

Selene caught one sword on her dagger, twisted, and forced Irina back a step.

Then the old houses can burn.

A merc tried to flank her.

Selene put two bullets into his chest without looking and kept her eyes on Irina.

The second merc lunged; she met him with a cut across the hamstring and a finishing thrust.

Ash and blood streaked the floorboards.

Irina’s expression tightened.

She had expected the human queen to fold under pressure.

Instead Selene was still standing, bleeding, and advancing.

You were never the primary target, Irina said suddenly, almost conversationally, as their blades locked.

You were the lever.

Selene’s pulse spiked.

“Explain.”

Irina laughed, short and bitter.

The Volkovs wanted chaos.

I wanted leverage.

But the one who paid the highest price wanted something more precise: the king distracted, the court fractured, and the mortal mate removed at the moment of greatest vulnerability.

You were useful.

Disposable.

“Who?” Selene demanded.

Irina’s eyes flicked past her, toward the darkness beyond the ruined door, and for the first time something like fear crossed her face.

You still don’t see it.

The roses.

The timing.

The way every traitor knew exactly when you would be exposed.

Someone has been inside the inner circle longer than I have.

The bond flared, Viktor’s warning, sharp and immediate.

Selene felt him close now, seconds away.

She pressed the advantage, driving Irina toward the wall.

Name them.

Irina spat blood.

You will meet them soon enough.

They are already moving on the estate while you play bait in this charming little cage.

The words landed like a second blade.

Selene’s concentration wavered for half a heartbeat.

Irina used it.

She slammed a boot into Selene’s injured side, sent her crashing into the table, and raised both swords for a killing stroke.

The windows and remaining door detonated inward at the same moment.

Viktor came through the main entrance like a force of nature, eyes pure crimson, claws extended.

He hit Irina with enough force to drive her through the far wall in a spray of stone and timber.

The remaining hostiles outside were already dying under Darius’s team.

Selene pushed herself up, ribs screaming.

Viktor was on Irina in the wreckage, one hand around her throat, the other braced to tear out her heart.

“Wait” Selene coughed.

She knows who the real architect is….

The fury in him was so pure the air itself seemed to thin.

“Speak,” he told Irina.

Irina, pinned and bleeding, smiled with red teeth.

It was never only the Volkovs.

It was never only me.

The one who designed the roses, the leaks, the secondary force… sits high enough that even you would hesitate, my king.

High enough to know the old blood wards.

High enough to walk your halls without suspicion.

She locked eyes with Selene.

Ask yourself who benefits if the human queen dies and the king is left unstable.

Ask yourself who has always smiled at the idea of a more traditional succession.

Viktor’s grip tightened.

“Name them.”

Irina’s laugh turned wet.

You will know when they make their final move.

Tonight was never about killing her here.

It was about drawing you both away from the heart of the estate.

The real blade is already at the center.

A distant explosion rolled across the grounds from the direction of the main house, deep, structural, wrong.

Viktor’s head snapped up.

Through the bond Selene felt the exact moment he understood.

The hunting lodge had been the distraction.

The true strike was aimed at the estate’s core while its king and queen were occupied with bait.

Irina used the split second of divided attention.

She drove a hidden silver spike into Viktor’s forearm, twisted free, and flung herself backward into the treeline with the last of her strength.

Darius’s team opened fire.

She vanished into the dark, wounded but alive.

Viktor snarled, already turning toward the main estate.

Blood ran down his arm from the silver wound.

Selene reached him, pressing her hand over the injury.

The bond carried both their fear now, sharp, synchronized.

The council chambers, she said.

Or the blood vault.

Something critical.

Viktor’s eyes met hers.

In them she saw the same realization crystallizing.

Someone had used Irina, used the Volkov remnants, used every lesser traitor as camouflage.

Someone who understood Viktor’s protective instincts well enough to predict he would leave the heart of his power to protect his mate.

Someone who had been close enough, long enough, to plant the second rose after Irina’s first attempt failed.

They ran.

The night air smelled of smoke and disturbed earth as they raced back toward the main buildings.

Distant alarms were beginning to sound.

Through the bond Selene felt Viktor’s rage solidify into something colder and far more dangerous than the fury he had shown Irina.

Halfway across the open ground, a second explosion lit the eastern wing in a brief orange flare.

Selene’s blood ran cold.

The trap had worked.

Just not the way they had planned.

And somewhere inside the estate, the true architect of the roses was already moving their final pieces into place.
