The morning light came thin and gold , pooling across the marble floors like spilled promise .
The Palace stirred earlier than usual – couriers whispering in corners , messengers darting through the corridors like anxious birds .
By midday , the gossip had crystallized into something sharper : The Prince is ward had taken her seat among the council scribes .
Elira could almost feel the weight of every glance that followed her down the Eastern corridor .
Eyes lingered too long .
Smiles were too precise .
Even the guards , loyal to Caelum , seemed uncertain of whether to salute her to watch her .
When she reached the chamber of the war council , Archscribe Thalin was already waiting – his frame wrapped in a scholar is cloak , his white hair bound with a leather cord .
“Elira ,” he said softly ,voice warm but unreadable .
“The Palace trembles with your name .”
She bowed slightly .
“Then I should walk quietly .”
His lips curved faintly .
“Wisdom .
I taught you that once .”
“You taught me many things ,” she said .
“Not all of the still hold true .”
A glint of amusement flickered in his gaze .
“And yet , here you are – ward to the heir , whisperer to the throne .”
Elira met his eyes , unflinching .
“And you , Archscrbe , remain precisely where the throne needs you to be .
How fortunate for both of us .”
He inclined his head , accepting the barb as compliment .
“The Queen Mother asked me to remind you – the council tonight will test you .
Speak carefully .
Some truths cut deeper than swords .”
She nodded , but inside , her thoughts were already faster .
Some truths were meant to cut .
When Caelum entered , the room shifted .
He had that effect – stillness becoming gravity .
“Lady Elira ,” he greeted , his voice formal infront of others .
“Report .”
She placed a sheet of parchment on the table .
“The ledgers from the Southern provinces .
Grain imports have dropped fifteen percent , but the taxes remain unchanged .
Someone is skimming from the border accounts .”
“Which province ?”
“Velinor ,” she said .
“The Governor is seal was falsified .
Thrice .”
Varek swore under his breath .
“That is treason .”
“No ,” Elira said .
“That is hunger .”
The silence that followed was brief but taut .
Caelum studied her , then nodded .
“We will send riders by dusk .
Quietly .”
She hesitated .
“If I may – I would go myself.
The ledgers hold more than forged seals .
There are memory traces in the ink .
I can read them .”
“That is a two – day ride .”
“Then we should not waste daylight .”
For a moment , he said nothing .
The room waited .
Finally , he dismissed the others with a nod .
When the door closed behind them , his voice changed – quieter , stripped of its courtly edges .
“You do not have to prove yourself to them ,Elira .”
She folded her hands .
“I am not proving anything .
I am protecting the realm .
Isn’t that what you taught me ?”
He stepped closer , the lamplight catching in his eyes .
“You are not expendable .”
“No ,” she said softly .
“But I am useful .”
That silence between them again – not empty , but charged .
Caelum exhaled slowly , as though releasing something heavy .
“Take Varek with you .
And two riders .”
“Understood .”
“And , Elira —”
She paused at the door .
“Do not trust Thalin .
Not entirely .”
Her pulse skipped .
“Why ?”
His gaze hardened .
“Because I do not .”
The road to Velinor was long and shadowed .
The land still bore the scars of old war – burned fields , forgotten villages swallowed by ivy .
Elira rode beside Varek , the cold wind biting through her cloak .
“You should not travel so soon after that council storm “.
Varek said .
“I have been through worse .”
He grunted .
“You have been through nothing yet .
Court war is slower , cruellest .
It bleeds you by words , not blades .”
She almost smiled .
“Then I will bleed quietly .”
Varek gave a rough laugh .
The Prince would hate that answer .”
Elira is hands tightened on the reins .
“He would hate losing more control .”
“Ah ,” Varek is tone turned knowing .
“So it is not only loyalty between you two .”
She met his eyes evenly .
“It is not only anything .”
They rode in silence after that , the wind whistling low between the bare trees .
By dusk , Velinore is stone outpost rose from the horizon – a fortress of weathered gray , its banners still bearing the crest of Darethia though half torn by time .
The steward greeted them stiffly . New chapters come out on g.com first.
“We were not expecting royal company .”
Elita smiled without warmth .
“That is why we came .”
Inside the archive , dust layered the ledgers like years of silence .
She set to work under dim torchlight , fingers tracing the lines of ink .
Faint echoes stirred beneath the surface – whispers caught in the residue of memory magic .
Lies .
Theft .
Fear .
She caught fragments of a voice – male , urgent low .
“The Queen cannot know .
The funds go North , as promised —”
Then the memory snapped .
Elira staggered slightly .
Varek steadied her .
“What did you see ?”
“Not what ,” she murmured .
“Who .”
“Tell me .”
She hesitated , then shook her head .
“Not yet .
It is too fragile.”
They returned to Darethia two days later , under a bruised sky .
The city gates loomed like judgement .
Caelum was waiting in the courtyard , cloak drawn against the wind .
When he saw her ; relief flickered acrossbhis face – quickly buried , but not unseen .
“You are late ,” he said .
“The truth took time to find ,” she replied , dismounting .
“Did you ?”
“Yes ,” she said , handing him the ledger .
“And you will not like it .”
He scanned the seal , eyes narrowing.
“This mark —”
“Belongs to the Queen Mother is steward ,” she finished quietly .
The silence that followed felt like thunder waiting to fall .
Finally , Caelum said , “no word of this leaves us .
Not yet .”
Elira nodded .
“You think she is behind it ?”
“I think ,” he said carefully , “that nothing happens in this Palace without her knowledge .”
Their eyes met , and distrust , but the fear of …
what truth might cost .
Elira is voice was low .
“Then we are already walking her chessboard .”
Caelum idblips curved , a humourless smile .
“Then let us learn how to play better .”
He turned toward the window , where the last light of day caught the towers of the Palace in burnished gold .
“We move carefully now , Elira .
Every step we take will draw blood – just not always ours .”
She studied his profile , the sharp grace of him caught between duty and something far more dangerous .
And she thought , for the first time , that perhaps the greatest war was , not against rebellion or crown – between the truths they both carried and the lies they would be forced to tell to survive .
