Morning broke with the taste of smoke .

From the Eastern ramparts , Elira watched thin grey banners coil from the forges below – iron and ash drifting into the pale sky .

Darethia prepared for war again , though no decree had yet been spoken .Full novel: His Quiet Flame : Bound By Destiny — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The air itself braved , waiting for command .

She has not slept .

The council is decision from the night before – mobilisation under the Queen Mother is banner – had hollowed her stomach .

Caelum had said little when the vote was cast , only dismissed the room with a calm that seemed carved rather than chosen .

Now he stood a few paces from her , hands clasped behind him back , cloak snapping against the wind .

The sunrise struck his profile in bronze and crimson .

“They will march within a week ,” he said at last .

Elira is throat tightened .

“Your mother moves faster than we predicted .”

He gave a humourless sound .

“She smells fear like wolves do .” A pause .

“Tell me , Scribe Vane – how does one write truth when half of it is poison ?”

She looked at him .

“You wrote it anyway .

Ink remembers what the tongue cannot speak .”

Something flickered through his eyes – recognition , perhaps , or weariness .

“Then I will need your your memory more than ever .”

He turned from the battlements , the conversation unspoken but complete , and gestured for her to follow .

The war Chambers thrummed with preparation .

Messengers move between scribes and tacticians , their boots drumming like pulsebeats on stone .

Maps covered every surface , layered in transparent vellum sheets – front lines , supply routes , the whisperbtrails of spies .

Elira took her place beside Caelum .

He did not sit ; he circled the table like a storm contained within its own command .

“Varek reports Sabotage in the Northern Quarter ,” he said .

“Two granaries burned before dawn .

Solenne claims the Queen Mother is agents did it to provide outrage among the common ranks .”

“And you believe her ?” Elirs asked .

“I believe everyone lies for a reason .

The question is whose lie serves mine .”

She , marked his words onto parchment , her quill steady though her pulse was not .

Caelum had become sharper these past days – less restrained , more deliberate .

Power suited him ; daanger followed it .

When the council dispersed , he waited until the last door closed before speaking again .

“She forces my hands ,” he said quietly .

“If I follow her orders , I become her weapon .

If I defy them , I fracture the realm .” Visit g.com for the full chapter.

Elira laid her pen down .

“Then find the fracture first .

Decide which break can be mended later .”

He looked at her then – truly looked .

“You make treason sound like philosophy .”

“Sometimes it is .”

The silence stretched , not uncomfortable but charged .

His gaze lingered a heartbeat longer than it should have , then he stepped away , the air between them cooling into formality once more .

By twilight , the castle hummed with rumors .

Elira heard her own name among them .

Scribe Vane dines with Prince again .

Scribe Vane sees more than she should .

Scribe Vane writes what even gods can not unwrite .

Truth clung to lies like thorns .

She learned to ignore it – or to appear as if she did .

That evening , Archscribe Thalin summoned her to the power archives .

The descent was steep and cold , torches hissing in their scones .

When she entered , the old man was already waiting by a sealed chest bound in silver thread .

“You have risen quickly ,” he said without greeting .

“Too quickly .”

“Would you prefer if had failed ?”

His thin smile did not reach his eyes .

“Failure is predictable .

Ambition is not .

The Queen Mother has asked for the transcripts of your council sessions .

I will send copies by dawn .”

Elira froze , “those records contain —”

“Everything ,” he finished smoothly .

“You will , of course , deliver them yourself .”

Her pulse hammered .

“And if I refuse ?”

Thalin is gaze softened , the way frost softens before it cuts .

“Then the court will wonder what the Prince is little Scribe has to hide .”

He turned away , leaving her in the echo of dropping wax and faint hiss of wards on the chest .

The guards hesitated but let her through ; the Prince had given standing orders that she was never to be turned away .

Inside , his study glowed with lamplight and disarray – maps folded over maps , wine untouched , a sword resting across a stack of decrees .

He looked up as she entered , exhaustion etched into the set of his mouth .

“Elira .”

She told him everything in a rush : Thalin , the transcripts the Queen Mother is demand .

When she finished , he was silent .

Then : “so , she means to see my every move .”

“She means to control it ,” Elira said .

“Through you , through me .

Through fear .”

He stepped closer , the space between them shrinking until she could see the faint shadow of stubble on his jaw , the line of tension at his throat .

“And what do you fear ?” he asked .

She met his gaze .

“Losing what little truth we still hold .”

Something in his expression shifted – guardedness giving way to a quiet intensity .

“Then we hold it together .”

The words carried more than strategy .

They hung in the air like a promise neither dared name .

When he reached past her to take the sealed chest from her hands , his fingers brushed hers – an accidental touch that felt anything but .

The lamplight caught the edges of his hair , turning dark gold to flame .

For a moment neither moved .

Then Caelum set the chest aside , breaking the spell with deliberate calm .

“We burn the copies ,” he said .

“Tomorrow night .”

Elira nodded , pulse still unsteady .

He turned away first , hid voice quieter .

“Go before someone sees .”

But she lingered at the door .

“Caelum .”

He stopped .

“If we burn them ,” she said , “we declare war – not with armies , but with truth .”

He gave a half – smile that did not reach his eyes .

“So be it .”

That night , from her chamber window , Elira watched smoke rise once more from the Eastern forges .

Only this time , she knew what else would burn by dawn – not iron , but secrets .

And somewhere in the dark heart of the castle , she felt the flame between them stir again , wordless and waiting .
