The rain had stopped , but the clouds still clung low over the city .
From the Castle is high terraces , Elira could see the streets glimmer with wet stone , the lanterns below burning like small , defiant stars .
She wanted to believe the world was calm .
But Darethia never slept without unrest , it merely learned to hide its tremors .
That morning , the Summons came not from the Prince but from the Queen Mother .
The Royal solar was perfumed with myrrh and frostvine , the kind of scent that masked steel beneath its sweetness .
Queen Ilyra sat by the window , dressed in white and silver , a letter unopened before her .
“Ah , the Scribe ,” she said , not unkindly .
“You have been very busy , Miss Vane .”
Elira bowed .
“Your Grace .”
“I hear you made quite the impression at council.
” The Queen is tone was mild , her gaze anything but .
“You have earned my son is confidence .
That is a rare and volatile thing .”
Elira held her silence .
Ilyra studied her a long while before speaking again .
“I once thought Caelum incapable of trust .
He learned too young that affection is a liability .”
She rose crossing the room with an unhurried grace if a predator .
When she stopped before Elira , her fingers brushed the edge of the desk – not touching , but close .
“You are loyal to him ?”
“I am loyal to the realm ,” Elira said carefully .
The Queen smiled faintly .
“A scholar is answer .
But let me be clear , child .
The court will not forgive you if you forget your place .”
Elira met her gaze .
“And if my place changes ?”
For a heartbeat , the air sharpened .
Then Ilyra said softly , “then make sure you survive it .”
She turned away , with a flick of her hand dismissing Elira as easily as a page turned .
When Elira reached the corridor , she nearly collided with Caelum .
“You were with her ,” he said , Reading her expression before she could mask it .
“She wanted a conversation .”
He frowned .
“My mother does not converse she calculates .”
“Then perhaps she is calculating whether I am a threat .”
His eyes hardened .
“You should not have gone alone .”
“I was summoned , Highness .
The corner of his mouth switched – not amusement , something like frustration restrained .
” Caelum ,” she said quietly , breaking decorum .
“Do you fear her ?”
He looked away .
“Only fools do not .”
That evening , unrest spread through the Castle .
Rumors of forged treaties , secret letters , couriers vanished .
The noble factions stirred like vultures catching scent of weakness .
Elira worked late in the strategy chamber , sorting through coded reports .
One , sealed in the crest of the Eastrn Alliance , hsd been opened before she received it .
Someone inside the court was interpreting royal correspondence .
When she brought it to Caelum , his jaw clenched .
“This came grouch my mother is courier line ,” he said .
“No one outside her circle touches those dispatches .”
“You think she —”
“I think ,” he interrupted , ” Someone means to put us against each other .”
He paced once , then stopped , facing her .
“If the nobles believe my mother and I are divided , the realm fractures .”
“Then they are already succeeding ,” Elira said softly .
He looked at her , and for a long moment the room felt too small for the distance between them .
“You should not have to bear this ,” he murmured .
“It is my duty .”
“It is mine to protect you from it .”
She smiled faintly .
“You cannot protect me from what I already know .”
He stepped closer , enough that she could se the faint scar beneath his jaw , the one the portraits never captured .
His voice lowered .
” And what do you know , Elira Vane ?”
“That truth frightens men who build Kingdoms on lies .”
A breath passed – close enough that she felt it on her skin .
Then he stepped back , the moment fracturing like glass .
“Tomorrow ,” he said , reclaiming his composure , ” I will have you transfer the cipher vaults to my personal guard .
I do not trust the council scribes .”
“As you wish .”
He turned to leave , then stopped .
“Elira .”
“Yes , Highness ?”
His expression softened .
“If anything happens – if anyone questions your loyalty again – come to me first .
Not Varek .
She nodded .
“Understood .”
But when the door closed behind him her hand was still trembling over the parchment .
Later that night , she went to the archives again .
The lower halls were empty , torchlight , flickering along the stone .
She followed the trail of memory – to the vault where the Royal Oaths were kept , sealed by runes centuries old .
When she touched the sigil , it pulsed faintly under her fingers .
And then – a flash of something not hers :
A child coyin .
A man kneeling in chains before a crown .
The whisper of a woman is voice – truth binds the blood het breaks the lie .
Elira staggered back , gasping .
The rune on the vault still glowed faintly , recognising her touch .
Not a scribe is touch .
A keeper’s .
She looked down at her palm – a faint mark , like silver light , had appeared where the sigil burned against her skin .
Whatever she was , the vault had named her part of it .
When she returned to her Chambers, a figure waited in the shadows .
“Thalin ?” She whispered .
But it was not him .
It was Commander Varek , cloak damp , eyes grim .
“There has been an attempt ,” he said .
Her heart lurched .
“On the Prince ?”
He nodded .
“Poisoned wine , intercepted before it reached him .
The seal bore his mother is crest .”
Elira stared .
“No .”
“The council will convene at dawn ,” Varek said .
“They will demand an inquiry .
And they will ask how you knew about the courier tampering before it happened .”
She froze .
“They will think I — ”
“They will think what Solenne wants them to .”
When the commander left , Elirs sank to the edge of her bed , the sigil still faintly glowing on her palm .
Somewhere in the Castle , the bells began to toll – not for death , but for judgement .
She closed her eyes .
And for the first time since she had entered the Royal Court , she was afraid .
Not of lies .
But of how much truth she now carried .
