In Las Vegas, that would have been like asking whether the desert wanted sun.

She led him through the casino with a staff member’s confidence and a hostess’s smile, explaining games, rooms, shows, and private services with the smooth rhythm of someone who could say the same sentences a hundred times without sounding bored.

“Do you play?” she asked.

“When I have to.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It is a character flaw.”

Lisa laughed and exchanged a few words with a floor manager.

A moment later, Ethan had ten thousand dollars in complimentary chips in front of him.

“House courtesy,” she said.

“The house must like me.”

“The house likes everyone until they win.”

“Then let us test the relationship.”

He chose dice.

Not because he believed in luck.

Because he had already spent the last month abusing certainty, and for once it felt pleasant to touch something genuinely random.

The first roll came up double ones.

The second, double twos.

By the fourth, people nearby had begun to notice.

By the sixth, the table was loud.

It was ridiculous.

Pointless.

Statistically obscene.

Exactly the sort of small miracle gamblers would remember incorrectly for the rest of their lives.

Ethan stopped before the room could turn strange.

He collected the winnings, separated out forty thousand dollars in chips, and pressed them into Lisa’s hand.

“For your trouble.”

Her smile changed.

Not enough for the public.

Enough for him.

“That is a generous tip.”

“I am under stress.”

“Is that what we are calling it?”

She glanced toward the private hallway beyond the casino floor, then back at him.

“Coming?” she asked.

The invitation was direct, adult, and unmistakably mutual.

Lisa was confident, very aware of the choice she was making, and not waiting for Ethan to invent a polite excuse.

Neither of them mistook it for romance.

It was mutual heat and curiosity, nothing more.

The restroom door closed behind them.

For a while, MGM, banks, covenants, Kerkorian, and the future all went quiet. You are reading on novelping.com, the official source.

When they emerged, Lisa’s lipstick was touched up but not perfect.

Ethan’s tie was no longer centered.

“You still look stressed,” she said.

“Vegas is failing me.”

“Then I should try harder.”

They went to the EFX Theatre next.

EFX Alive!

was in residence, loud and elaborate enough to distract almost anyone.

Ethan barely noticed it.

Charles and Kerkorian had been behind that closed door for too long.

Long conversations could mean progress.

They could also mean disaster wearing good manners.

Halfway through the performance, Ethan reached for Lisa’s hand.

She looked at him.

“Again?” she whispered.

“I need to burn off steam.”

Her mouth curved.

“You are a demanding guest.”

“Complain to management.”

She stood.

This time, his phone rang before they reached the door.

Lisa let out a soft, amused breath and stepped back.

Ethan looked at the screen.

Charles.

He answered at once.

“Dinner,” Charles said.

“Private room.

Ten minutes.”

That was all.

No tone.

No result.

Just dinner.

Ethan returned to the private dining room with his pulse held carefully in place.

Charles and Kerkorian were already seated.

Kerkorian looked as unreadable as before.

Charles looked calm.

Too calm.

The meal began with business hidden under food.

They spoke of hotels, old Hollywood, the state of theaters, the stupidity of certain executives, and the way studios could spend money as if budgets were weather.

Kerkorian asked Ethan two questions about the future of film distribution.

Ethan answered like a young man with unusual opinions, not a man who knew streaming would reshape the industry.

Only near the end did Kerkorian turn the blade.

“Your father says you believe MGM is worth saving.”

“I believe MGM is worth owning,” Ethan said.

“Saving comes after that.”

“Most men who say that want the lion.”

“The lion is useful.”

“Useful?”

“A roar opens doors.

It does not make money by itself.”

Charles did not move.

Kerkorian’s eyes narrowed, then he chuckled.

The deal did not close at dinner.

Deals like that did not close over dessert.

But when the Hawthornes flew back to Los Angeles, Charles finally told Ethan the shape of it.

“He will sell.”

Ethan closed his eyes for one second.

“Terms?”

“The total transaction value is two point eight billion.

Two billion at the transfer of control, with the remaining eight hundred million deferred under the agreement.”

That was better than Ethan had feared.

Still brutal.

“Condition?”

“If we sell MGM later, Kerkorian has a right of first refusal.”

Ethan laughed.

Charles looked at him.

“You find that funny?”

“He thinks we will fail, drown in the debt, and hand the studio back to him after polishing the furniture.”

“He did not say that.”

“He did not need to.”

Charles leaned back in the aircraft seat.

“There is also the matter of our banks, our covenants, our current lack of stable cash flow, and the fact that we are buying a wounded studio with borrowed money.”

“When you list it like that, it sounds irresponsible.”

“It is irresponsible.”

“Then we should make it profitable quickly.”

Charles looked at him for a long moment.

“You are very calm for a man standing under two billion dollars of debt.”

Ethan turned toward the dark window.

Below them, America passed in scattered lights.

“I have seen what MGM can become,” he said.

“Now we just have to build it before the debt eats us.”
