For one impossible moment, Hope forgot to breathe.
Everything around her had changed.
The road was still the road.
The abandoned cars were still scattered along the pavement, all of that was still real.
The smoke still drifted across the distant buildings.
Her aunt and uncle were still behind her.
Most of all, the infected were still coming.
Yet Hope perceived everything differently.
She could see the individual movements of the figures ahead of her.
The shift of a shoulder.
The movement of a foot.
The slight turn of a head.
She could hear things she had never noticed before.
She could feel it, or hear it, she wasn’t sure.
The engine idling behind her.
The ticking of cooling metal beneath the hood.
Her uncle’s breathing.
Her aunt whispering her name.
And beneath all of it, something else.
A pulse.
Not outside her.
Inside.
Hope lowered the weapon slightly.
The System filled her vision.
[AWAKENING INITIATED.]
[Secondary Biological Agent: Compatible.]
[Host Adaptation: Successful.]
[Physical enhancement beginning.]
[Ability development beginning.]
Hope stared.
“What’s happening?”
[Your biological structure is adapting.]
“To what?”
[Agent B.]
Hope swallowed.
The warmth she had felt during training returned.
This time it wasn’t confined to her arms.
It spread through her entire body.
Her chest tightened.
She dropped to one knee.
“Hope!”
Her uncle started toward her.
“Stay back!” The words came out sharper than she intended.
Her uncle stopped.
The infected were getting closer.
Hope forced herself upright.
The warmth became heat.
Then energy.
For several seconds, she thought she might collapse.
Instead, the sensation suddenly stabilized.
The pain vanished.
Hope stood.
The System changed.
[Awakening complete.]
[Congratulations, Hope.]
She stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
[Primary Ability Unlocked: Enhanced Physicality.]
[Secondary Ability Unlocked: Accelerated Recovery.]
[Potential Ability Pathways detected.]
Hope blinked.
“Potential pathways?”
[Additional abilities may develop through experience, adaptation, achievement, and System progression.]
Hope looked at her hands.
Nothing appeared different.
She clenched one fist.
It felt stronger.
Not dramatically but undeniably.
“Status.”
The display appeared.
Name: Hope
Level: 1
Strength: 27
Agility: 29
Endurance: 31
Recovery: 28
Awakened: Yes
Abilities: Enhanced Physicality, Accelerated Recovery
Hope stared.
Her previous numbers had been nowhere near this.
She looked at the infected again.
Seven, no nine were close.
There were more coming from between the buildings.
The System highlighted them.
[Threat Assessment]
Infected: 9
Threat: Moderate
Recommended action: Avoid prolonged exposure.
Hope almost laughed.
“That’s the plan.”
She raised her weapon.
The first infected charged.
Hope fired.
The creature fell.
The sound echoed through the empty street.
Her aunt screamed.
Hope didn’t look back.
Two more came from the side.
She fired again.
The second fell.
The third kept coming.
Hope stepped backward.
The infected moved faster than she expected.
She raised her weapon.
It struck.
Hope felt the impact.
Then realized something strange.
It hadn’t hurt.
The creature’s hands had hit her shoulder, but the force had barely moved her.
Hope shoved it away.
She expected resistance.
Instead, the infected flew backward several feet.
It struck the side of a parked vehicle and collapsed.
Hope stared.
“Okay.” She looked at her hand.
“That’s new.”
Another infected came from behind.
Her uncle shouted.
“Hope!”
She spun.
The creature was already on her.
Hope reacted without thinking.
She stepped aside.
The infected missed.
Hope struck it.
Her fist connected with its chest.
The creature flew backward.
Hope froze.
The road went silent.
Her aunt stared through the windshield.
Her uncle stared too.
Hope looked at the infected lying several feet away.
Then at her fist.
The System appeared.
[Enhanced Physicality confirmed.]
Hope exhaled.
“Yeah.”
She looked at the remaining infected.
“Confirmed.”
The fight lasted less than two minutes.
Hope didn’t enjoy it.
She discovered that was important.
The power inside her didn’t turn the infected into targets.
They were still people or at least they had been.
She moved carefully, every strike was controlled.
Every shot deliberate.
She avoided unnecessary violence whenever possible.
But the infected didn’t hesitate.
They attacked relentlessly.
By the time the final creature fell, Hope stood in the middle of the road breathing hard.
Her aunt opened the car door.
“Hope?”
Hope turned.
“I’m okay.”
Her aunt stepped out.
She looked at the bodies.
Then at Hope.
“What happened to you?”
Hope didn’t know how to answer.
“I don’t know.”
That was the truth.
Her uncle approached slowly.
He looked at the damaged vehicle.
Then at the infected.
Then back at Hope.
“You threw one of them.”
Hope nodded.
“I noticed.”
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
Her uncle stared at her.
Hope looked away.
“I think I changed.”
Her aunt walked closer.
“Are you sick?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
Hope nodded.
“I’m sure.”
Her aunt reached out and touched her face.
“You don’t have a fever.”
“No.”
Her uncle frowned.
“Then what happened?”
Hope looked toward the road.
“I think the virus did something.”
Neither of them spoke.
Hope wasn’t ready to tell them everything.
Not yet but she couldn’t hide the physical changes.
Not anymore.
“Let’s get home first.
Come to my farm.” They returned to the vehicles.
Hope opened the System.
A new message appeared.
[Awakening Event recorded.]
[Experience acquired.]
[Combat experience acquired.]
[First hostile encounter completed.]
[Ability progression available.]
Hope frowned.
“Ability progression.” A panel opened.
Enhanced Physicality — Level 1
Accelerated Recovery — Level 1
Below them were several locked abilities.
Enhanced Speed — Locked
Enhanced Perception — Locked
Elemental Manipulation — Locked
Energy Projection — Locked
Ability Development — Locked
Hope stared.
“How do I unlock them?”
[Conditions vary.]
She almost smiled.
“Naturally.” One ability caught her attention.
Enhanced Speed.
She remembered how fast she had become during training.
“How do I unlock this?”
The System displayed:
[Physical adaptation threshold.]
Hope understood.
She had to train.
She had to improve and survive and continue to develop.
The System wasn’t handing her everything.
It was giving her a path.
She could work toward it.
That suited her.
The drive home was quiet.
Her aunt and uncle followed Hope.
Neither of them said much.
Hope couldn’t blame them.
She had just thrown an infected person across a road.
There wasn’t an easy conversation after something like that.
Hope finally broke the silence through the radio.
“How are you feeling?”
Her aunt answered.
“Confused.”
“Me too.”
“Are you really okay?”
“Yes.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
Her aunt paused.
“Then we’ll talk when we get home.”
Hope smiled faintly.
“Okay.”
She looked at the road.
The sky was beginning to brighten.
They were still more than an hour from Blackwater.
Hope’s mind raced.
The System had confirmed what she had suspected.
Agent B could awaken abilities.
But not everyone would receive the same abilities.
The System had called her compatible.
That suggested other people might be compatible too.
She wondered how many.
She wondered how many had already awakened.
Then she thought about the infected.
If Agent B could awaken people…
What happened when someone caught both viruses?
She asked.
“System.”
[Yes.]
“What happens when someone is infected with both agents?” There was a pause.
[Multiple outcomes are possible.]
“Such as?”
[Insufficient data.]
Hope sighed.
“You’re killing me.”
[No.]
Hope stared.
The System’s response was so literal that she laughed.
Her aunt’s voice came through the radio.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You laughed.”
“I did.”
“Good.”
Hope smiled.
For the first time since the apocalypse had begun, she felt something other than fear.
She felt possibility.
They reached Blackwater shortly after sunrise.
Hope drove through the new gate.
Her aunt and uncle followed.
Her aunt looked around.
“Oh.”
Hope smiled.
“Yeah.”
Her aunt climbed out of the vehicle.
“This isn’t the place you described.”
“I’ve been busy.”
Her uncle walked toward the barn.
“How much did you spend?”
Hope looked at him.
“Most of it.”
He shook his head.
Then he looked at the new solar array and the reinforced fencing.
The greenhouse and the water system.
He looked around at all the equipment.
“Apparently you have been busy.”
Hope smiled.
“I told you.”
Her aunt walked into the farmhouse.
She stopped in the doorway.
“You’ve turned this into a fortress.”
“Not exactly.”
“Hope.”
“It’s a farm.”
Her aunt looked at her.
“It’s a fortress with tomatoes.”
Hope laughed.
“Something like that.”
They spent the morning getting settled.
Hope showed them the farmhouse and all the things she had created.
She avoided showing them the inventory.
That was still something she wasn’t ready to explain.
Her aunt looked at the enormous quantity of food stored in the cellar.
“Why do you have enough food for a year?”
Hope hesitated.
“Because I don’t think this is going away quickly.”
Her aunt nodded slowly.
“I think you’re right.”
That surprised Hope.
“You do?”
Her aunt looked toward the television.
“No one is saying it, but things are getting worse.”
Hope nodded.
“Yes.”
Her uncle sat down.
“What do you know?”
Hope looked at both of them.
She could tell them everything.
The System.
The countdown.
The viruses.
The powers.
The settlement.
The future.
But she wasn’t sure they would understand.
More importantly, she wasn’t sure what the System would allow.
She decided to begin slowly.
“There are two biological agents involved.”
Her uncle frowned.
“Two?”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
Hope hesitated.
“I’ve been researching.”
It wasn’t the complete truth but it wasn’t exactly a lie.
“The first causes the illness we’re seeing.”
Her aunt nodded.
“And the second?”
Hope looked at her hands.
“I think the second one can change people.”
“Change them how?”
Hope looked at her uncle.
“Some people may develop abilities.”
Silence.
Her aunt stared.
“Abilities?”
“Strength.
Speed.
Things like that.”
Her uncle leaned back.
“You think the virus gave you that?”
Hope nodded.
“I know it did.”
He stared at her.
“Show me.”
Hope looked toward the kitchen.
There was a heavy wooden table.
She had never noticed how heavy it was before.
She walked over and placed one hand beneath it.
She lifted and the entire table came off the floor.
Her aunt gasped.
Her uncle stood and stared.
Hope lowered it carefully.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, her aunt whispered: “How?”
“I don’t know.”
Her uncle walked around the table then looked at Hope.
“Does it hurt?”
“No.”
“Can you control it?”
“I think so.”
He nodded slowly.
Then something unexpected happened, he smiled.
Not because the situation was funny but because he was proud.
“Then maybe buying the farm wasn’t such a crazy idea.” Hope felt tears forming.
She looked away before they could fall.
That afternoon, Hope checked the System again.
Something had changed.
Settlement Level: 1
Population: 3
She stared.
Her aunt and uncle had been added.
Affiliated Population: 3
Development Points: 0
Then another line appeared.
Potential Leader Bonus: Locked
Hope frowned.
“Leader bonus?”
[Settlement leadership progression unavailable at current level.]
“How do I unlock it?”
[Settlement requirements.]
“What requirements?” The System listed them.
Population: 10
Infrastructure: 70%
Food production: 10%
Defense: 25%
Hope nodded.
That seemed reasonable.
She needed ten people, seventy percent infrastructure, ten percent food production and twenty-five percent defense.
She could accomplish those.
Then the System displayed something else.
[Follower System unlocked.]
Hope’s eyes widened.
“Already?”
[Basic functionality available.]
A new screen opened.
Followers: 0
Follower Capacity: 0
Follower Points: 0
Hope stared.
“How do I get follower capacity?”
[Settlement progression.]
“And follower points?”
[Follower development.]
“Meaning?”
[Individuals possessing abilities may contribute Follower Points when loyalty and settlement affiliation requirements are met.]
Hope leaned closer.
“So someone with an ability joins me…”
[Potentially.]
“…and becomes loyal…”
[Correct.]
“…then I receive points.”
[Correct.]
“What do the points do?”
The System opened another screen.
A tree of abilities appeared.
Unfortunately most were locked.
Enhanced Speed
Enhanced Strength
Enhanced Perception
Thermal Resistance
Regeneration
Elemental Manipulation
Energy Manipulation
Flight
Telekinesis
Barrier Generation
Advanced Recovery
Hope stared at the possibilities.
Then she noticed the bottom of the screen.
[Higher-tier abilities require Development Points and progression.]
Hope slowly smiled.
This was bigger than she had realized.
The settlement wasn’t simply a place to hide it was connected to her own development.
The stronger her people became, the more potential she had.
The more people she protected, the stronger her settlement could become.
And the stronger she became, the more people she could protect.
It was a cycle, it was a positive one.
Hope closed the screen.
Then she looked out across the property.
Her aunt was helping her uncle unload supplies.
The greenhouse was beginning to fill with green.
The river flowed peacefully beyond the trees.
It was difficult to imagine that the world was ending but Hope knew it was.
She also knew something else now, she wasn’t alone.
That changed everything.
That night, Hope stood on the porch.
Her aunt and uncle were asleep inside.
The property was quiet and the river moved in the darkness.
Hope opened the System.
Global Event Countdown
5 days, 3 hours, 42 minutes.
She watched the numbers tick downward.
Then another notification appeared.
[Warning.]
Hope’s smile disappeared.
[Biological event acceleration detected.]
“How much?”
[Significant.]
“Meaning?”
The System displayed a map.
Several cities were highlighted.
One directly upstream.
Two more downstream and another far from the river.
Hope stared.
“What’s happening there?”
[Infection clusters increasing.]
Then the display changed.
A single red marker appeared.
It was moving.
It was moving fast.
Hope watched it travel across the map.
“What is that?”
[Unknown.]
The marker stopped and the System flashed.
[Agent B activity detected.]
Hope’s heart began pounding.
“Someone awakened.”
[Affirmative.]
“Where?”
The System zoomed in.
The marker was less than forty miles away.
Hope stared at the location.
Someone out there had changed.
Someone had developed powers.
Hope had no idea whether they would become an ally…
or the first real threat to everything she was building.
