Third Person POV
King's Landing, 96 AC.
All the members of the council began to leave the room a moment later, while Baelon looked at his father with a raised eyebrow.
When everyone left, only Baelon and Jaehaerys remained in the room. Even Ser Ryam Redwyne left with a look from the prince that said he wanted to speak with his father alone.
"What is it, Baelon?" Jaehaerys asked calmly.
"You tell me, father. What was that?" Baelon crossed his arms.
"What was that what? I don't remember doing anything wrong," the king replied, raising an eyebrow.
"Father, you became somewhat disturbed when they started talking about that giant wolf. When you asked about its color, everyone noticed. The Master of Whisperers gave all the information, but you didn't even seem to be listening anymore, until you dismissed everyone," the prince crossed his arms, looking at the king with some suspicion.
"I just remembered something, Baelon. Nothing you should worry about."
"Does it have to do with the wolf being white?"
"That is a direwolf, Baelon, a creature that was extinct south of the Wall." Said Jaehaerys.
"You seemed more concerned with its color than with it being a giant wolf..." Said the prince at last.
The prince waited for an answer, but Jaehaerys merely stood up.
"Forget about it, son. Return to your duties as heir to the throne. You will receive your niece and escort her to the throne, I will soon go to the location. I will go to my room to get something and will be there shortly."
Despite the suspicion still in the prince's eyes, he bowed to his father.
"Of course, Your Majesty."
Ser Ryam Redwyne quickly followed the king as he advanced toward his chambers, separating from Baelon.
The first thing Jaehaerys did was dismiss the Kingsguard. He found himself alone in the place where he and his queen shared every night. He took his small diary from his personal belongings, where not even the maids could touch, placing it on the desk near the window, with quill and ink at hand, before beginning to mark the pages in the middle of it.
'The white wolf of the North, just like in my dreams, with very ancient memories.' He left this small phrase marked.
He heard the door opening, and soon saw his wife, Alysanne, entering.
"Jaehaerys, are you alright?" she approached him. Age had already come for both of them, but there was still affection between them.
"I am fine, Alysanne. I bet you found Baelon," he murmured.
"I did. I just left Aemma in good hands, Viserys went to take care of his wife and I came to see you, since we have to receive Rhaenys, Meleys did not go unnoticed by anyone, Aemma was startled by the dragon's roar over the city. By the way, she is very well. I am sure that soon we will have our third great-grandchild. Then I found Baelon in the corridor, and he said some things about you being a bit disturbed by the council meeting. Are you alright?"
Jaehaerys stared at the ceiling in silence.
"Jae...", she placed her hands on his shoulders with tenderness, while looking at the closed diary. He had certainly marked something, but she was not so intrusive. She trusted Jaehaerys.
"The white wolf that the Master of Whisperers mentioned... I dreamed about it, Alysanne," he said, as the queen raised an eyebrow.
"You dreamed about it?" she asked carefully.
"Yes. I see my dreams... dragon dreams, Alysanne. It cannot be mere coincidence. These are dreams I have been having for over a year. In my dreams I see a creature, the wolf as big as a horse... with red eyes. I always dream of it, I am standing in a place full of snow and the wolf comes toward me..." he said.
"You have been dreaming about this for a year? Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I thought it was nothing, Alysanne. Just a foolish dream, but I see that it is a dragon dream now..." he said, although the image he had in his memory was of the wolf in the snow walking toward him, with curious red eyes.
What he did not tell his wife was about the female figure that was in the distance, who had approached the wolf, but stopped, while the animal walked alone toward Jaehaerys, the woman remained there, standing still watching him with a smile.
"I understand... well, what should be done about it?" she asked in the end.
"Well, I will do nothing," he stated, shrugging. "I do not know what this dream means. I do not know about this giant wolf. They say a smallfolk boy took it in. It is loyal to the boy, as the direwolves were to the Starks. The Master of Whisperers also mentioned that the boy probably has Stark blood, through some bastard descendant, but he cannot confirm anything." he said.
"The current Lord Stark is Benjen Stark, right? Send a letter to him. I am sure he will respond," she said, massaging his shoulders.
"I will not bother Lord Stark with rumors and a dream I am having from more than a thousand kilometers away... I will leave that to the Master of Whisperers. Besides, there is nothing to be done about a wolf bound to a boy living on some farm in the North. Whatever this means, only time will tell, Alysanne," he said, while she nodded.
"In any case, Rhaenys must be arriving now. Baelon is there to receive her. Let us go to the throne, I want to see my granddaughter," Jaehaerys added.
Alysanne nodded, as they left the room and went to the throne room, followed by the Kingsguard.
"My king, Rhaenys Valerio is being received by the heir prince at this moment. They will proceed to the throne room shortly," a servant approached the king as he reached the throne and informed him, while Jaehaerys nodded.
Jaehaerys looked at the throne for a second before turning and settling into it. Alysanne stood beside him. He asked for a chair for her, and she sat down. Alysanne had always remained standing, behaving as an exemplary queen, but due to her age, a seat had begun to be provided for her.
Jaehaerys remained seated on the throne, feeling the small pointed swords touching his back, unable to harm him. As they said, the throne had never rejected him. He was the greatest king of Westeros. Many said he would be the greatest king to ever exist.
The court quickly filled with people as soon as they learned that the king would be on the throne to receive his granddaughter.
"You should not be here, Aemma," Alysanne looked at the young woman approaching, with Viserys helping her.
The woman gave only a somewhat sad smile. "It is alright, my queen. I can bear this," she said.
Alysanne knew it was her grandson who had asked her to come, Viserys could sometimes be a fool like his grandfather, always neglecting family in favor of duty. Aemma should be resting, not here. But Alysanne said nothing about it.
A moment later, Daemon himself arrived with an arrogant tone. Jaehaerys merely watched him as he settled in.
"You know the Royces are arriving in the coming days, right?" he said, not failing to cast a stern look.
"Yes, Your Majesty," he replied in a bad mood.
"Then you know your duty..." Jaehaerys said, his slightly irritated tone making it clear that he knew the boy very well.
Daemon was extremely troublesome and arrogant, but he still had his duties to the house. Daemon said that if he managed to obtain a dragon, he could free himself from the marriage, but Jaehaerys would never allow that. Even if the boy tamed the Cannibal himself, he would still have his duties to the family.
"Mother..." The timid voice came as Gael approached.
"Daughter, take a seat, your niece is arriving." Alysanne said.
Little Gael nodded and looked at her father with a wave, Jaehaerys returned it and went back to looking forward, waiting for the door to open, ignoring the whispers of the people in the court.
In the next moment, the doors opened, and soon Baelon entered, followed by a young woman wearing a leather riding armor. Her silver hair and purple eyes made her stand out among everyone, fitting very well among the most important people in the place.
"Your Majesty, I present Princess Rhaenys," Baelon announced.
Jaehaerys looked at his granddaughter. "You came early to King's Landing, Rhaenys," he said.
He knew that the atmosphere between them had not been the best in recent years, since he had named Baelon, her uncle, as heir. But the one who most fueled conflict was Corlys Velaryon, with his ambition.
Jaehaerys would never hand the throne to someone outside the family, who would simply inherit everything his family had built since Aegon the Conqueror, and the wars fought and sacrifices made to keep the Seven Kingdoms united.
"Your Majesty, I am glad to see you. I hope you are in good health," Rhaenys said, bowing.
He simply nodded and turned to Baelon. "Arrange a room on the royal family's floor for Rhaenys. Will the Velaryons arrive in the coming days?" he ordered, before looking again at his granddaughter with the question.
"They are already on their way. They should arrive tomorrow," Rhaenys replied.
"That is excellent. I would very much like to see our great-grandchildren. How is little Laenor?" Alysanne commented beside him.
"You will see him soon, my queen. Laena is a lovely girl and Laenor is already speaking his first words," Rhaenys said with a proud mother's smile.
Soon after, Baelon accompanied her to her chambers.
The day passed with the castle more bustling than ever. With the anniversary of the forty-eighth year of King Jaehaerys I's reign approaching, the nobles began arriving in the capital and settling in.
Some letters were also sent to various lords, as well as a summons for the Blackwoods to appear, as Jaehaerys would attempt to reconcile the dispute between them and the Brackens over the border lands.
The Royces also arrived the following day. Daemon was forced to receive them along with his father and brother. Meanwhile, Rhea Royce was there, just as grim as Daemon. Both glared at each other with evident hatred.
Everyone noticed this, but not all marriages were made of love, and neither of the two families seemed willing to back down from the agreement they had made.
The Manderlys of the North had also arrived, and the tournament celebrating another year of Jaehaerys' reign was set up. Several of the greatest knights of the realm were gathered there, celebrating the prosperity of the Seven Kingdoms.
While this was happening, Daemon was nowhere to be found in the following days. His brother asked about him, but no one could say where he was. When the first day of the tournament arrived, Daemon was still missing. This began to worry Baelon, who was already being questioned by Jaehaerys about the great offense of Daemon abandoning the tournament — and also disrespecting the family of his future wife.
When they discovered where he was, they learned that Daemon had already arrived at Dragonstone.
Baelon had no choice but to mount his monstrous dragon, Vhagar, and go after his son to bring him back. He grew irritated upon realizing that his son had pretended to participate, only to flee to Dragonstone while everyone was distracted by the festivities.
He landed near the fortress. No one had seen Daemon until then, so he went to the dragons' area, avoiding the Cannibal's lair, as he knew Daemon was not foolish enough to try anything with that wild dragon. Even so, he was worried — dragons were not toys to be tested by attempting to tame them.
But upon finding Daemon, Baelon was shocked.
His son was standing... beside a dragon.
Daemon had already heard his father's dragon arrive, so he remained there, arms crossed, while the red dragon at his side watched, baring its teeth at the newcomer.
Baelon was astonished to recognize Caraxes, the dragon of his older brother and former heir to the throne, standing beside his son.
"I knew it was a sign for me to come to Dragonstone and claim my own dragon!" Daemon said, with an arrogant tone.
"Do you have any idea what you have done, you fool? You left everyone worried!" Baelon snarled immediately.
"Well, I had to do it, father," Daemon replied, shrugging, before looking at the dragon. "I wonder if there is still a saddle kept for him? I would love to arrive in King's Landing riding Caraxes. That will intimidate certain people."
"You fool! If you think you will manage to escape the marriage with your wife, you are mistaken," Baelon looked sternly at his son.
Daemon merely shrugged. "I am sure I will intimidate her."
"No, you will not. I will never allow it. My father made this arrangement, and it is bound to happen, Daemon. Grow up already!" Baelon said.
"Grandfather only thinks about the realm all the time, father! I am a prince of House Targaryen, not a man of the Vale!" Daemon commented, irritated.
"Yes, son... and even being a prince, duty comes for all of us," Baelon rolled his eyes. "My father was never a good father, but he was always a great king. And we have our duty to our family," he said in the end.
Daemon, irritated, had no choice but to go with his father, riding Vhagar, as they needed to return to King's Landing. Afterward, he would still find a way to return to Caraxes.
The two returned.
Meanwhile, at the tournament, the royal family watched the first days of the jousts. Alysanne was beside Gael, her youngest daughter, and also held her first great-granddaughter, little Laena Velaryon, who was extremely similar to her mother: skin as fair as milk, bright purple eyes, and platinum hair — even reminding many of Alysanne herself, with much talk about the resemblance.
The king was also there. He occasionally touched the head of the girl of 4 namedays, while she looked around curiously, attempting a smile. But his thoughts seemed to be elsewhere.
His eyes scanned the entire audience.
He found the separate camp where some northern lords were, but only the Manderlys were present, along with some minor lords.
This made him think again about that wolf from a few days ago mentioned in the council... His mind returned to that female figure from his dream...
'Lyanna.'
