Chapter 24: Meeting in the Dark

House of Blood

The subterranean alarm reverberated through the stone floor, vibrating in the marrow of Valerian’s bones.

Footsteps echoed from the wide marble staircase leading down from the grand ballroom—precise, measured, and accompanied by the distinct, humming resonance of high-tier Imperial mana.

Valerian stood beside the shattered chest of soul-gems, his heavy ironwood bo staff resting across his shoulder. Beneath his black faceless mask, his frost-hide blindfold pulsed softly in the dark.

A flash of gold and white silk broke through the shadows at the vault archway.

Princess Solene Sol stepped into the subterranean chamber. She was flanked by six Imperial Shadow Guards, their enchanted broadswords already drawn and humming with pressurized wind mana.

Solene’s crimson eyes swept over the scene in a fraction of a second: three unconscious cultists, the shattered lock of the imperial tribute chest, and the singular, masked figure standing calmly amidst the rubble.

Her eyes locked onto the black faceless mask.

"So," Solene spoke, her voice smooth, low, and laced with absolute imperial authority. "The Northern Ghost finally decides to step out of the snow and into my house."

Valerian didn’t shift his stance.

"Your house has termites, Your Highness. I was simply doing some pest control."

Solene took a slow step forward, her guards shifting instantly to form a protective arc in front of her.

"The Imperial Court does not require unsanctioned exterminators. Who hired you? Was it the Prim Sanguis clan? Or perhaps..." Her gaze flicked toward the unconscious Medeis elder lying against the wall. "...a faction within the Medeis family?"

"Nobody hires a ghost," Valerian replied smoothly, his tone pleasant, almost conversational. "And if you check that chest, Princess, you’ll find those soul-gems were laced with dormant abyssal spores. In ten minutes, the ventilation array would have dispersed them directly into your ballroom above."

Solene’s expression didn’t waver, but her fingers twitched slightly against the hilt of the concealed stiletto at her waist.

She wasn’t a fool.

The spatial readings in the room were completely clean—meaning whoever neutralized the threat had done so without leaking a trace of rogue mana.

"Even if your words are true," Solene said, stepping past her guards, "you broke into the Imperial Vaults. Unmask yourself and submit to Imperial questioning. If you are innocent, the Crown will compensate you."

’Unmask yourself?’ Wren chuckled mockingly inside Valerian’s mind. ’Tell her you’ll trade masks if she trades her crown, partner.’

’Silence, Wren,’ Valerian thought.

Instead of answering, Valerian slightly adjusted his grip on the bo staff.

"I must decline," Valerian said softly. "The Crown’s dungeons are notoriously drafty."

"Then you leave me no choice," Solene declared.

"Capture him alive!" the captain of the Shadow Guards roared, lunging forward with explosive speed.

His sword cut through the air in a blinding, wind-infused arc meant to disarm and pin Valerian against the stone wall.

Valerian didn’t draw a weapon.

He didn’t activate blood aura.

As the captain’s blade descended, Valerian stepped into the guard’s reach—pivoting off his left heel at a precise angle.

CLANG!

The blunt cold-iron cap of the bo staff struck the flat of the captain’s blade, deflecting the lethal momentum harmlessly into the stone floor.

In the exact same motion, Valerian drove the butt of the staff into the captain’s shoulder joint, leveraging his forward momentum to send the heavily armored guard crashing into his comrade behind him.

"What?!" Solene’s crimson eyes widened.

Pure physical mechanics.

No aura, no spellcraft—just flawless, terrifying kinetic leverage.

The remaining four guards surged forward simultaneously, their blades forming an inescapable cross-pattern grid.

BZZZZT.

Before the blades could reach Valerian, a silver needle dropped from the vaulted ceiling above, striking the floorboards between Valerian and the guards.

A dense, blinding mist of spatial displacement smoke erupted instantaneously.

"Spatial distortion radius: twelve yards!" Castor’s voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Calculated escape window: 2.1 seconds!"

"After him!" Solene commanded, her gold-and-white robes whipping around her as she invoked a high-tier Imperial Light spell, illuminating the subterranean chamber in a blinding flash of golden radiance.

The smoke cleared in a second.

The vault was empty.

The three cultists lay bound in rune-inscribed spatial chains, the corrupted soul-gems were completely purified, and on the marble pillar beside the vault entrance, a single line had been carved into the stone with the sharp tip of an ironwood staff:

> The board is set, Your Highness.

Standing alone in the silent vault, Princess Solene stared at the carved words, her heart beating with an unfamiliar, sharp adrenaline.

She reached out, her fingers lightly touching the fresh groove in the marble.

"Ghost..." Solene whispered, a dangerous, fascinated smile touching her lips for the very first time.

"You really think you can play a game against the Sun?"

The Rooftops of the Imperial Capital

High above the sparkling streets of Solaria, the cool autumn night wind whipped through Valerian’s wolf-fur cloak.

He stood at the edge of a high clocktower gargoyle, his black faceless mask held in his left hand, exposing his rune-covered frost-hide blindfold to the moonlit sky.

Beside him, Kaelen leaned on her bone bludgeons, looking out over the sprawling city.

"The Princess is smart," Kaelen noted, pulling a flask of northern mead from her belt. "She didn’t panic when her guards fell. She was studying you."

"She is a Medeis-backed royal," Valerian said softly, placing the mask inside his spatial ring. "She has been trained to treat every person as a piece on a board since the day she learned to walk. But tonight, she realized someone else is moving the pieces."

’And what about your brother?’ Wren asked, her shadowy ribbon form spiraling around his arm. ’Alexis was down there in the ballroom. He was looking at Lady Lyra like he was trying to solve a puzzle.’

Valerian went silent for a long moment, his blindfolded gaze turning toward the distant, glowing spire of the Prim Sanguis estate in the southern quarter of the city.

"Alexis is sharp," Valerian murmured, his voice softening slightly behind his cold composure. "He will piece together the connection between the northern ledgers and the ’Ghost’ eventually. But until the Eldritch Sun Sanctum’s roots are completely dragged into the light... I cannot let him or Vespera know I am alive."

He turned back to face the sprawling capital, his hand tightening around the heavy ironwood bo staff at his side.

"Castor," Valerian called out.

"Yes, My Lord?" Castor popped out from a spatial ripple, holding a glowing map of the continent.

"Target the Sanctum’s secondary supply depot in the Eastern Marches," Valerian commanded, a cold, sovereign authority echoing in his voice.

"It’s time we force the Eldritch Elders to step into the light."
