“Thud!”
A dull sound rang out, as though something heavy had hit the ground.
Nearby, a purple-haired girl’s eyes lit up.
She immediately ran toward the source of the noise.
…
…
Renn opened his eyes and found the purple-haired girl standing over him, looking down.
A trace of surprise flickered through her eyes, followed by disappointment.
But almost immediately, that disappointment gave way to a hint of eagerness.
Suddenly, an enormous torrent of information flooded into Renn’s mind.
“So I’ve come to a world called Hunter x Hunter?”
“The person whose body I’ve taken over was a member of some mafia organization. He screwed up a job, got killed, and his corpse was dumped in a place like Meteor City as if it were garbage.”
Renn fell silent for a moment.
He knew a fair amount about this world.
It was one of the more dangerous worlds in Japanese anime—not necessarily because its power system was overwhelmingly strong, but because society itself was chaotic and lawless.
Meteor City was one of the clearest examples.
Originally, this place had simply been a dumping ground where countries from all over the world discarded their trash.
As time passed, however, it gradually became a major source of recruits for the mafia.
Even the Zoldyck family, the world’s most renowned family of assassins, hired people from here.
Renn remembered that the mother of Killua, one of the main characters, had also come from Meteor City.
At that thought, Renn couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
He was just an ordinary person.
Surviving in a place like this would be anything but easy.
Worse still, although the body he had possessed had come back to life after his soul entered it, it remained severely injured.
Suddenly, a voice sounded in his mind.
“DNF Class System initializing.”
“Selecting main class…”
“Insufficient energy.”
“Main class selection failed.”
“Selecting secondary profession…”
“Selection successful.”
“Congratulations, Host. You have successfully become a Disassembler. Current level: Lv. 1, Scarred Disassembler.”
Renn’s eyes lit up.
He immediately met the purple-haired girl’s gaze.
“Interested in making a deal?”
The girl froze for a moment.
“What kind of deal?”
“I’m injured right now, so I need somewhere quiet where I can rest. I also need water and food. In exchange, I can give you gemstones.”
Renn was referring to Clear Cube Fragments, one of the basic materials produced when items were processed through a Disassembler.
Thinking about it, Renn couldn’t help regretting that the person he had encountered wasn’t Biscuit.
Given Biscuit’s obsession with gemstones, things like Clear Cube Fragments and Red Cube Fragments would probably have fetched him some very good items from her.
“Gemstones?”
“That’s right. Very beautiful gemstones.”
The purple-haired girl hesitated.
“I want to see them first.”
“Sorry, I can’t produce them right now. But I can guarantee that everything I’ve said is true.”
The girl stared at Renn.
After a long while, she finally nodded.
“Fine. But if what you give me doesn’t meet my expectations, I’ll throw you out immediately.”
“No problem.”
Renn let out a breath of relief.
The purple-haired girl walked over and draped one of Renn’s arms across her shoulders.
Supporting him, she helped him make his way downhill.
They were standing atop an enormous mountain of garbage.
A road ran along the bottom, with a few small wooden huts scattered sparsely beside it.
The entire area was permeated by a desolate atmosphere.
The stench of rotting garbage hung thick in the air.
It was a place completely unsuited for human habitation, yet countless people lived here.
Meteor City might have been called a “city,” but in reality, its territory was no smaller than that of some countries.
At the top stood the Council of Elders, beneath which existed countless smaller factions.
The purple-haired girl brought Renn to a small wooden hut.
She pushed open the door and entered.
The interior was extremely cramped.
There was a bed, a table, a chair, and a small wooden chest.
Nothing else.
The walls were covered in patches of nailed-on wooden boards.
There were no windows and no lamps, leaving the room dim and gloomy.
The girl helped Renn onto the bed.
After hesitating for a moment, she opened the chest and took out a can of food, along with a plastic water bottle containing less than half a bottle of water.
“Thanks.”
Renn leaned back against the wall and opened the can.
A pungent smell immediately struck his nose.
He instinctively frowned.
The food had already begun to spoil.
However, Renn noticed that the instant he opened the can, the purple-haired girl across from him secretly swallowed.
Only then did he realize that this can might very well be the best food she possessed.
The sort of thing she normally couldn’t bear to eat, allowing herself only the tiniest taste every now and then.
With that realization, the smell suddenly didn’t seem unpleasant at all.
Renn picked up the spoon and began eating in large mouthfuls.
Before long, the entire can was empty.
The feeling of food filling his stomach restored a little of his strength and gave him a better understanding of his physical condition.
The fatal injuries this body had suffered were already gone.
The only truly serious injury remaining was the fracture in his lower leg.
A broken bone took a long time to heal.
It wasn’t the kind of injury that could recover in a short period.
But aside from his leg, Renn estimated that the rest of his body would be almost fully recovered after about a week.
He might not be moving around freely by then, but getting out of bed and walking normally should at least be possible.
The purple-haired girl handed him the water bottle.
