The Aethelgard Academy library was a labyrinth of silence. It smelled of old dust, decaying leather, and the faint, sweet scent of mana preservative wax. It was the only place David Silver felt he could disappear.

After the duel with Sterling, the Academy grounds had become a gauntlet of whispers. The Static Shield had pulverized a Tier 4 quicksilver blade and shattered a Tier 5 Nullifier.

Now, students moved out of his way as if he were carrying a contagious plague. The instructors looked at him with eyes that were half fascinated and half ready to call the Inquisitors.

David slumped into a high backed velvet chair in the furthest corner of the East Wing. He was tucked behind a shelf of ancient, boring books on agricultural geomancy.

He wanted a nap. He wanted to wake up and find out his greatest problem was still just a clogged core and a mean noble rival.

Even if one were to ignore the heavy atmosphere of the library, every boy in the vicinity was paying attention to the center desk for two simple reasons, Boobs!

Teacher Rain was there, sitting at the main circulation desk while grading papers. She was a wonderfully blessed woman and her beauty could be rated 4/10, but the racks she was carrying instantly elevated her from an ordinary 4 to a 20! Even she could not carry it all by herself while she worked.

She had to rest them on the edge of the mahogany desk she was sitting behind to relieve herself. The desk groaned under the weight, but Teacher Rain did not seem to notice. She just kept scratching her pen against the parchment while her chest moved along with her breathing.

David ignored the distraction. He had bigger problems. "I went from a noble with a participation trophy to a world ending disaster in about forty eight hours," David muttered.

He leaned his head against the cool wood of the table. "My parents would be so proud. Or they would sell me to the circus. Honestly, it is a coin flip at this point."

[System Note: Your market value as a circus act is low. Your market value as a dissected research subject, however, is currently skyrocketing.]

"Thanks, System. That really helps my anxiety," David groaned.

He reached for a heavy book titled The History of Soul Sealing and Dread Locks. He needed to understand what was sitting in his chest. If he was a ticking time bomb, he at least wanted to know how many wires were left to cut. He flipped through the pages, but the text was dense and full of theoretical mana physics that made his head hurt.

"The history of the Silver family does not involve Level 9 seals, David."

The voice was cool and precise. It came from exactly two inches behind his left ear.

David did not jump. His Flash Step mastery and Toxin Sovereign instincts had already registered the presence. Still, she had moved with a silence that defied normal Tier 3 physics.

He turned slowly to see Rachel standing there. She was not wearing her Academy robes. She wore a tight, obsidian grey combat suit that seemed to absorb the dim light of the library.

Rachel was also a wonderfully blessed girl. The combat suit was so tight that it left nothing to the imagination. Her heavy chest was pushed forward, making David swallow hard as his eyes roamed that endowed area. She was far more dangerous than she looked.

"Rachel," David said. He tried to summon his best harmless loser smile. It felt brittle. "Have you come to check out some books on soil pH levels? I hear the Chapter on peat moss is a real page turner. It is very exciting stuff."

Rachel did not smile. She pulled out the chair across from him and sat down. Her silver white hair shimmered like a blade in the darkness. She placed a small, circular jade disc on the table.

With a soft click, a shimmering veil of silence expanded around them. It cut off the rest of the library. Now, even the sound of Teacher Rain’s heavy chest hitting the desk would not reach them.

"A Silence Ward? That is high tier," David noted. His eyes narrowed. "You are doing a lot of work for a girl who is just suspicious of a classmate."

"I stopped being suspicious the moment you ate that Nullification Field," Rachel said.

She leaned forward and her winter storm eyes locked onto his. "My name is Rachel of the Silver Stallion clan, but that is only my face at this Academy. In reality, I am a Watcher. Do you know what that is, David?"

David leaned back. He felt his heart thumping a steady, rhythmic warning. "It sounds like a hobby for people with too much free time and binoculars."

"It is a secret society," Rachel said, ignoring his joke. "We have existed since the First Dimensional War. Our purpose is simple: we protect the world from the things that do not belong here. We protect the world from Vessels."

David felt the term Vessel echo in his mind. The system had mentioned it before, but hearing it from her made it feel much more lethal.

"A Vessel," Rachel continued, "is a body born in this world that hosts a soul or a power from the Great Void. They start small. They look like failures. They have Static Cores or Clogged Meridians because their human bodies are literally struggling to contain the sheer mass of the entity inside them. And then, one day, the dam breaks."

She pointed a slender finger at David’s chest. "You did not cast a Static Shield against Sterling. You projected a fragment of a Sovereign Field. I have seen the records, David. I have seen what happens when a Vessel fully awakens. They do not just win duels. They erase kingdoms. They rewrite reality until the world is nothing but a shadow of their own will."

David let out a long, slow breath. He felt the weight of the Aeon Catalyst in his mind. The 100,000x multiplier had turned a spark into a sun eater. "So you think I am some ancient monster in a teenage meat suit? That I am just waiting to turn everyone into soot?"

"I do not think it. I know it," Rachel said. Her voice softened, but the edge of steel remained. "There is a legend of a man who fought the gods nine hundred years ago.

They called him the Calamity King. He possessed a Static Core that could devour the mana of an entire dimension. He was the one who nearly allowed the rifts to stay open forever. The Order believes you are his reincarnation. Or worse, a fragment of his power that found a way back."

David blinked. "Calamity King? That is a bit much. I am struggling with basic calculus, Rachel. I do not think I am ready to lead a void army. My grades are not even that good."

[Relatable Humor: Based on your recent performance, your Calamity rating is currently a 7.2 out of 10. Your Calculus rating is a 2.4. You are officially better at destruction than math.]

"The Order of Solace has already received my report on the gravity trial," Rachel said. She ignored his silence. "They are sending an Inquisitor. Not a school instructor, David.

They are sending a High Inquisitor of the Seventh Tier. If they confirm what I suspect, you will not be expelled. You will be executed. On the spot. They do not take chances with Vessels."

David looked at the jade disc flickering on the table. The reality of his situation was finally settling in. He was not just a student anymore. He was a hunted animal.

"Why are you telling me this?" David asked. "If you are a Watcher, should you not be stabbing me right now? Why the Silence Ward and the warning?"

Rachel looked away for a moment. Her gaze drifted to the ancient books on the shelves. "Because I have watched you for three years. I saw the way you treated the commoner recruits when no one was looking.

I saw the way you took the blame for that girl who broke the alchemy lab equipment. A Calamity King does not show mercy to the weak. A monster does not have a soul as tired as yours looks."

She looked back at him. Her expression was a mix of pity and warning. "You have a threshold, David. Right now, you are Tier 1.

You are manageable. But the moment you reach Tier 5, the moment you become an Arcane Grandmaster, your presence will be visible to the Order’s Great Eye from across the continent.

There will be no hiding. No masks. No Void Shimmer. The world will see you as a beacon of the Void, and the Order will come to put that light out."

"Tier 5," David whispered.

[System Note: At your current rate of cracking the seal, you will hit Tier 5 in approximately three months. Or four days, if you keep blowing things up.]

"You need to stay under the radar," Rachel said. She stood up and picked up the jade disc. The veil of silence began to thin. "Do not win the Imperial Games too easily. Do not show off. If you hit Tier 5 before you find a way to mask your true origin, I will not be able to protect you. I am a Watcher, David. If the order comes and I have to choose between you and the world, I will choose the world."

She turned to leave, but stopped at the edge of the shelf. "There is a mission coming up. A caravan to The Wailing Maw. Take it. Get out of the Academy.

The Maw is full of spatial rifts and noise. It will hide your growth for a while. It might be your only chance to get strong enough to survive what is coming."

Rachel disappeared into the shadows of the library before David could even say thank you. The Silence Ward vanished. The mundane sounds of the library rushed back in.

David could hear the scratching of pens and the heavy breathing of Teacher Rain as she continued to struggle with her chest and her paperwork.

David sat there for a long time. He stared at the book in front of him. He felt the Toxin Sovereign blood pulsing in his veins. It was a power that felt darker and heavier than it had ten minutes ago.

"Reincarnation of a Calamity King," David murmured. "I cannot even get Sterling to stop calling me trash, and I am supposedly a world eater."

[System Note: To be fair, Sterling is a very committed bully. It is almost admirable.]

"System," David thought. His gaze hardened. "If I reach Tier 5, can we edit the beacon Rachel talked about?"

"Then I guess I have a deadline," David said. He stood up and shoved the history book back onto the shelf. "I need to get to the Maw. I need to get strong. And I need to do it without turning the Great Eye toward me."

As he walked out of the library, he saw his own reflection in a polished suit of armor. His eyes looked normal, but for a split second, he saw a flicker of that purple black void. He was not a loser anymore. He was a Vessel. And according to Rachel, the whole world was waiting for him to overflow.

"The Wailing Maw," David whispered. A dark and relatable chuckle escaped his lips. "It sounds like a lovely vacation spot. I hope they have chocolate. Or at least something better than the school cafeteria food."

He headed toward his dorm and the weights on his shoulders felt heavier than any gravity artifact. He had a secret society to outrun and a seal to break.

There was a throne he did not even want waiting for him at the end of the road. But for the first time, he did not feel like a victim. He felt like the one holding the leash on the monster.

And he was not going to let it go until he was the one in charge. He walked past the main hall, his face pale about his future but his eyes concealing a secret. He was ready for whatever came next!
