The basement beneath the provisional armory didn’t smell like polished iron and gun oil like the high-rank vault.

It smelled of rust, damp mold, and rotting leather.

While the rest of the Academy was still reeling from the tournament fallout, Kael walked down the dimly lit stone corridor alone.Full novel: I Awakened the Weakest Ability, But My Evolution Has No Limits — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The roar of the Colosseum above was muffled down here, sounding like distant thunder.

The provisional armorer—a grumpy, grey-haired dwarf named Master Orin who had been demoted to servicing F-ranks thirty years ago—didn’t even look up from his workbench when Kael walked in.

He was filing down the edge of a chipped iron shield.

“Racks are in the back,” Orin grunted, gesturing with his rasp file toward the darkest corner of the vault.

“Take one weapon and one set of reinforced leather.

Sign the ledger on your way out.

If you break ’em, the Academy docks it from your non-existent pay.”

“Appreciate it,” Kael said softly.

He navigated the cramped rows of discarded equipment.

Most of it was junk—dented breastplates, cracked wooden shields, and rusted spears left behind by dead provisional students.

Kael’s Faster Brain filtered through the clutter in seconds, rejecting thirty weapons before his eyes snagged on something sitting at the bottom of a wooden crate.

It was a sword, but not an Academy-issued blade.

It had no crossguard, no ornate crest, and no mana-conduction grooves.

The scabbard was cracked black leather, and the hilt was wrapped in frayed cord.

When Kael lifted it, the weight felt completely wrong—top-heavy, dull, and unpolished.

He pulled the blade an inch from its sheath.

The steel was pitch black, completely non-reflective, and covered in faint, geometric micro-scratches.

The blue screen flickered to life in the quiet room.

[Item Identified: Pre-Cataclysm Combat Blade (De-registered).] [Material: High-density carbon-iron alloy.

High-rank mages are idiots.

This blade will never crack under heat or shatter under pressure.]

Kael’s fingers closed around the cord-wrapped hilt.

It fit his grip as if it had been forged for his hand.

With Beginner Swordsmanship active, he didn’t need a blade that glowed with fire or ice; he needed a tool that wouldn’t snap when he struck something denser than stone.

He strapped the black scabbard to his waist, selected a simple, dark leather chestguard that covered his healing shoulder, and walked back to the ledger.

Orin glanced at the black blade at Kael’s hip, his file pausing for a fraction of a second.

The old blacksmith’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn’t say a word.

He just pushed the ledger forward.

Kael signed his name and turned toward the heavy, iron-bound door at the rear of the armory—the entrance to the descent shaft.

Two heavily armed A-rank guards stood on either side of the archway, holding long halberds.

They didn’t look at Kael with disgust or anger anymore.

They looked at him with a strange, solemn quiet.

To them, an F-rank walking into the Deep Dungeon voluntarily wasn’t a hero—it was a ghost taking his first steps into the grave.

“Section 4 gates are locked behind you,” one of the guards said, his voice flat through his full-face visor.

“You have seven days to hit your extraction quota of low-grade mana crystals.

If you aren’t back at the winch platform by day seven, the gate stays shut.”

“Understood,” Kael said.

The heavy iron wheel on the gate turned with a deafening, grinding screech.

The thick metal bars slid upward, revealing a steep, winding spiral staircase carved directly into the dark basalt bedrock.

Cold air rushed up from the abyss.

It tasted of ancient dust, wet copper, and something sharp and metallic that made the back of Kael’s tongue tingle.

High-density ambient mana.

The gate slammed shut behind him with a heavy, final THUD, locking the Academy out.

The darkness swallowed him whole, broken only by the faint, eerie blue luminescence of phosphorescent moss clinging to the damp walls.

As Kael descended, the silence grew thick and heavy.

The air was colder down here, untouched by the artificial heating of the upper floors.

The stone walls were no longer smooth masonry; they were ancient, jagged basalt covered in pre-Cataclysm chisel marks.

The Academy hadn’t built this dungeon.

They had built their school right on top of a buried world.

Kael reached the bottom of the spiral stairs after ten minutes of quiet walking.

He stepped out onto a vast, vaulted subterranean highway.

The ceiling was lost in shadows sixty feet above, supported by massive, decaying stone pillars carved with ancient, unreadable runes.

The blue screen flared in the dim light, its glow casting long shadows across the dusty floor.

[Location Confirmed: The Deep Dungeon – Floor 1.] [Ambient Mana Density: 310% above surface level.] [System status: Caloric burn stabilized by ambient atmospheric saturation.] [Warning: The beasts down here do not have ranks painted on their foreheads.

Tread lightly, Host.]

Kael rested his right hand on the hilt of his black blade.

He took a deep, steadying breath of the cold, copper-tasting air.

For the first time since he had been enrolled in the Academy, the suffocating eyes of the nobles, the instructors, and the Rank Authority were gone.

There were no brackets here.

No political games.

Just him, the dark, and an ancient world waiting to be explored.

He broke into a quiet, low-profile jog, vanishing into the shadows of the old road.

It really helps set the mood for the dungeon and the tension—I totally recommend putting them on while you read!
