Chapter 15: The Fortune in the Warehouse

I Awoke in a World of Women

When the morning sun crested over the fertile Karsfeld valley, Seraphine awoke feeling violently refreshed, her body buzzing with raw energy for her morning training.

The profound realization that she had finally seized back her health didn't mean she could afford to rest on her laurels - a strong, unyielding body demanded relentless, punishing discipline to maintain.

She launched immediately into a grueling circuit of push-ups, crunches, deep squats, and pull-ups.

The heavy iron dumbbells and kettlebells she had commissioned from the local blacksmith through Sabine Keller had arrived some time ago, now resting heavily in the corner of her spacious stone bedchamber.

Armed with this rudimentary equipment, she could execute the vast majority of her torturous regimen within the absolute privacy of her own four walls, completely shielded from the prying, judgmental eyes of the court ladies.

She only ventured out to the inner castle walls for her daily, grueling runs.

She was clad in her lightweight, highly practical training gear - a tightly fitted, elastic linen sports top that aggressively bound her firm, shapely breasts, paired with skin-tight leggings that mercilessly hugged the heavy swell of her buttocks and the long, muscular curve of her thighs.

Under the sheer brutality of her exertion, the fabric of the top rapidly saturated with sweat, turning practically translucent against her flushed skin. Beads of moisture tracked glistening paths down her slender stomach, tracing the newly carved, hard ridges of muscle before vanishing beneath the tight waistband of her leggings.

Once she finally concluded the punishing circuit, her immediate priority was her morning bath. The entire fortress had already been brutally conditioned to her draconian hygiene schedule - for an absolute half-hour before breakfast, the bathhouse was strictly cordoned off exclusively for the young heir.

Today’s bath, however, was fundamentally different.

Nearly a month ago, Seraphine had successfully bullied her Sire into acknowledging that if the bloodline was to maintain proper cleanliness, the castle desperately required a dedicated, fully modernized bathing complex. Tucked away in a secluded corner of the fortress walls, an entirely new, private bathhouse had been constructed, and this morning marked its absolute maiden voyage.

Stepping over the threshold, Seraphine surveyed the three distinct chambers with profound, engineering satisfaction.

The first room served as a dedicated dressing area, designed for seamlessly stripping off or donning heavy court gowns. The second housed a fully modernized, aggressively hygienic latrine system.

The third chamber was the bathing hall itself - dominated in the center by a massive, circular stone basin brimming with steaming, scalding water, continuously heated by an advanced sub-floor hypocaust furnace system she had personally drafted.

The water sat at an absolutely flawless temperature of roughly thirty-eight degrees Celsius. This was no pathetic wooden tub; this was a literal, late-medieval hot tub.

Seraphine peeled off her sweat-soaked leggings and sports top, and with a heavy, deeply luxurious sigh, sank her naked, athletic frame into the steaming depths.

The basin was so incredibly wide and deep she could practically swim in it. For a solid fifteen minutes, she aggressively soaked her aching muscles, washing away the thick layer of sweat and the lingering exhaustion of her training, allowing the scalding currents to gently caress her smooth, milky-white skin and hardened nipples.

Stepping out onto the cold stone steps, she vigorously dried herself with a thick linen towel, savoring the feeling of the water beading off her firm thighs and buttocks.

In the dressing room, she slipped into an exceptionally elegant domestic gown - a dress tailored tightly beneath the bust with a deeply plunging neckline, spun from rich emerald silk that sensually hugged her feminine curves and narrow waist, featuring a high, daring slit running up the side of her hip.

Finally, she stood before the vanity mirror: armed with her heavy horn comb and the lavender-scented pomade, she meticulously slicked her voluminous, golden strands straight back, fully exposing her sharp, high cheekbones and proud, aristocratic forehead.

Verifying in the polished bronze mirror that she looked absolutely, devastatingly immaculate, she strode with a confident, predatory grace toward the dining hall.

She took her seat directly across from Rosalie von Rosenfeld. The young fiancée was draped in a delicate, girlish blue gown, and an incredibly blissful, utterly enamored smile had been plastered across her adorable face since the moment she woke up - the brutally heavy, flavor-packed cuisine of Karsfeld had evidently completely hijacked her heart.

The second the girl’s eyes locked onto Seraphine’s intense, sapphire gaze, she violently slapped a linen napkin over her mouth, flushing a brilliant, agonizing shade of crimson.

But before Rosalie could stammer out a single syllable, Seraphine turned her devastating smile toward the Baroness and her mother seated at the head of the table:

"Sire, Mother, I must formally admit that the new bathhouse is an absolute triumph of engineering. It was a staggeringly sound investment."

At the mere mention of the word "investment," Adelgarde Karsfeld nearly choked on a mouthful of dark wine. That massive stone bathing complex had cost an absolute fortune!

The Baroness was still furiously kicking herself for allowing her daughter to manipulate her into bleeding the castle treasury dry just to fund a vain, obsessive hygienic whim. It would mathematically take months before their coffers recovered from the blow.

Or, at least, that was what she believed. Adelgarde was completely, blissfully oblivious to exactly what had transpired over the last twenty-four hours down in the river settlement.

Practically the entire stockpile of raw iron ore the barony had hoarded had been violently smelted overnight in the Bessemer converter, forged into blindingly bright, top-tier steel ingots!

Seraphine fully intended to liquidate merely a few tons to violently gorge the treasury, while aggressively hoarding the vast majority to serve as the foundational bedrock for her impending industrial expansion.

Noticing the painfully strained grimace on Adelgarde’s face, Seraphine narrowed her eyes.

"Sire, you look terrible. Are you feeling unwell?"

The Baroness pinned her daughter with the furious, burning glare of a seasoned warlord. The unbuttoned collar of her tunic heaved heavily against her powerful chest.

"I am perfectly fine! It is simply that this miraculous bathhouse of yours, where you just spent such a delightfully luxurious morning, cost us an absolute fortune. I have no earthly idea how we are going to plug the massive, gaping hole in the treasury..."

Seraphine initially completely dismissed her mother’s dramatic lament, casually taking a massive, aggressive bite out of a warm, crusty roll stuffed with roasted sausage and fresh herbs. But the second the actual mathematical implications of the Baroness's words finally clicked in her brain, she threw her head back and barked a loud, crystalline laugh.

That was exactly the wrong move. Adelgarde’s face instantly flushed a violent, furious red.

"Does the crushing poverty of our bloodline deeply amuse you, Seraphine?!"

Rosalie von Rosenfeld, who had been completely absorbed in eagerly devouring the delicate pastry, immediately snapped her head up. But what casually slipped from Seraphine’s lips next caused an absolute, suffocating dead silence to drop over the entire hall:

You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.

"Oh, Sire... if you only possessed a fraction of an idea exactly how many tons of pure, flawlessly refined high-carbon steel are currently sitting in our heavily guarded warehouses by the river, the word 'poverty' would never cross your lips again. We currently possess enough raw bullion capital to outright buy this entire damn county!"

While Seraphine was utilizing a touch of dramatic hyperbole, the raw geopolitical reality wasn't far off. They had successfully amassed a staggering, unimaginable fortune in raw, weapons-grade steel overnight.

After all, two terrifyingly powerful aristocratic dynasties from neighboring domains were actively, viciously conspiring to marry into House Karsfeld exclusively because they had intelligence regarding the rich ore veins buried in these mountains.

Even Rosalie’s own mother, the terrifying Countess Margarethe von Rosenfeld, had been entirely willing to ruthlessly barter away the happiness of her third daughter to a supposedly sickly, useless heir, purely to sink her claws into those exact resources.

If those rival houses discovered that Seraphine had successfully weaponized the technology to instantly convert that raw ore into top-grade steel in a single night, they would instantly mobilize their armies and violently invade Karsfeld to tear those secrets from her dead hands.

Adelgarde’s jaw practically hit the heavy oak table with a loud crack. The Baroness hadn't been actively tracking her daughter's complex technological operations - Seraphine’s aggressive engineering concepts sounded like absolute, borderline-heretical fairy tales to her.

She had only authorized the construction because her trusted master artisans hadn't flagged any financial risks. But if her firstborn was actually telling the truth, there were currently dozens of tons of elite steel sitting in a warehouse waiting to be liquidated!

Rosalie was equally paralyzed by shock. She knew with absolute, terrifying clarity exactly why her Sire had ruthlessly forced this betrothal.

She was supposed to be the bait - the diplomatic wedge that would eventually force Seraphine to surrender the deep mines to House von Rosenfeld after the wedding. And now, this exact same Seraphine was casually, smilingly announcing that she had successfully weaponized a smelting technology on a scale that didn't exist anywhere else in the entire Alarian Empire.

Lady von Rosenfeld absolutely could not believe her own ears. She was going to have to instantly draft a highly classified missive to the Greifenmark, violently forcing her mother to completely overhaul their entire geopolitical strategy regarding Karsfeld.

Only little Marielle maintained a state of blissful, absolute serenity, completely failing to grasp the terrifying geopolitical implications detonating above her head. She was simply thrilled that the massive new bathhouse was finally operational, desperately fighting the urge to bolt from the table so she could immediately go splash around in the scalding water.

Seraphine was actively biting the inside of her cheek to suppress a vicious smirk.

Did Adelgarde honestly, genuinely believe that her highly educated engineering heir would bleed the treasury dry on a bathhouse without having a fully operational, mathematically guaranteed return on investment ready to deploy?

The sheer profits from liquidating a tiny fraction of the steel would violently gorge the treasury to bursting, instantly funding the massive deep-shaft expansions in the mountains. The vast majority of the steel, however, would be aggressively hoarded as the physical building blocks of her new world order.

She desperately needed that steel to violently deploy universal land reclamation and a massive irrigation network across the entire valley. And that didn't even begin to cover the impending secondary wave of innovations - advanced steel plows, mechanical threshers, and heavy bucket elevators. Every single one of those machines required massive quantities of refined iron.

In a year or two, Seraphine fully intended to aggressively force early mechanization upon the agricultural sector, permanently freeing thousands of peasant women from back-breaking field labor and violently transitioning them into a highly skilled workforce to man her impending manufactories.

For the immediate future, however, the absolute priority was casting steel irrigation pipes. When combined with Marta Reiss’s four-field rotation, the massive influx of phosphorus slag fertilizer, and the new irrigation network, this year’s harvest was mathematically guaranteed to violently shatter even her most optimistic projections.

Adelgarde shot out of her heavy chair, completely unable to remain seated for another second. She had to lay eyes on this technological miracle at Sabine Keller’s forge immediately.

"You must excuse me, but I have extremely urgent administrative matters to attend to in the settlement," the Baroness barked nervously. "I will see you all at supper!"

She practically sprinted out of the Great Hall, destined to spend the entire remainder of the day locked in the warehouses, aggressively forcing Sabine to break down the agonizing technical minutiae of the pig iron refining process.

The second Adelgarde vanished, Rosalie slowly turned her gaze to Seraphine, her sapphire eyes wide with absolute, mute awe, and asked in a quiet, trembling voice:

"Seraphine... what exactly are you planning to do with a literal mountain of steel?"

Seraphine smiled gently, reaching across the table to lay her strong hand over her fiancée's delicate, trembling fingers. She knew exactly what vicious ulterior motives drove House von Rosenfeld, but she had zero intention of showing her full hand just yet:

"Initially, I will liquidate a small batch of ingots to aggressively gorge my Sire's treasury and finance the deep excavation of the mountain shafts. The vast majority, however, will be immediately forged into a sprawling network of heavy pipes and canals, designed to violently irrigate every single acre of farmland in our valley."

The young girl had absolutely no earthly idea what the word "irrigation" meant, but one terrifyingly comforting truth instantly clicked in her brain - Seraphine was not some bloodthirsty, warmongering despot obsessively hunting for violent conquests.

She simply desired absolute, unshakeable wealth, food security, and ironclad safety for her own people. After spending her entire childhood suffocating under the tyrannical, hyper-aggressive, warmongering rhetoric of her own court in the Greifenmark, Rosalie felt a wave of absolute, boundless relief crash over her.

Her fiancée was fundamentally, radically different from the rest of the rotting aristocracy.

She knew with absolute certainty that she had to violently convince her Sire, Margarethe, to permanently abandon any delusional fantasies of annexing the Karsfeld mines. Instead, the Countess needed to immediately come to the negotiating table and hammer out a highly lucrative, equitable trade treaty to purchase Karsfeld steel to arm her own military forces.

Since Sabine Keller was now entirely occupied desperately trying to explain complex thermodynamics to a violently confused Baroness, Seraphine found herself with a rare, completely free afternoon. She escorted Rosalie on another leisurely stroll through the settlement.

This time around, the young Lady von Rosenfeld was visibly vastly more relaxed around the peasant women, who eagerly greeted their future sovereign with wide, fiercely proud smiles and deep bows.

They didn't return to the fortress until the sun finally dipped below the horizon, arriving just in time for supper. While Seraphine was practically vibrating with the urge to aggressively hand over the new irrigation pipe schematics to Sabine, she genuinely appreciated the fleeting moments of peace.

She absolutely hadn't expected the company of her little cousin to be so profoundly relaxing.

Rosalie, on the other hand, felt as though she were floating in a dream - these past two days had unequivocally been the most peaceful, breathtakingly beautiful moments of her entire life.

Following supper, the young aristocrat retreated to the lavish new bathhouse. The second she sank into the scalding water, she finally, viscerally understood her fiancée’s aggressive obsession with frequent bathing.

As the steaming currents washed the dust from her flawless, porcelain skin, Rosalie’s thoughts spiraled exclusively, obsessively around Seraphine.

Half an hour later, as she stepped out of the bathhouse draped in a flowing, diaphanous blue nightgown, she nearly collided with Seraphine, who was standing right on the threshold of the dressing room.

Rosalie’s damp, golden hair was completely unbound, spilling heavily over a deeply plunging neckline that left very little to the imagination beneath the sheer, clinging silk.

The sheer intensity of her fiancée staring down at her sent an absolute, paralyzing wave of excruciating embarrassment crashing over the young girl.

With a high-pitched, panicked squeal, she darted past Seraphine and sprinted wildly down the stone corridor toward her guest chambers, violently throwing the heavy iron deadbolt shut the second she was inside.

It wasn't until her heart finally stopped hammering violently against her ribs that she sat down at the heavy writing desk to draft the critical missive to her mother. What was supposed to be a freezing, ruthlessly calculated political intelligence report detailing Karsfeld's staggering steel reserves and the absolute necessity of a trade alliance, aggressively mutated into a feverish, hopelessly infatuated, multi-page monologue from a girl head-over-heels in love with an incredibly brilliant, beautiful, and devastatingly charming heir.

Barely the last two sentences actually addressed the diplomatic treaty, hastily scribbled in a desperate panic at the very bottom of the page. She violently slapped her wax seal onto the parchment, shoved it into the hands of her most trusted knight with ironclad orders to ride at a dead gallop for the Greifenmark, and then collapsed onto the heavy mattress with a fiercely blissful, enamored smile plastered across her face.

Meanwhile, after a long, luxurious soak, Seraphine retreated to her own chambers. By the flickering, pale light of the oil lamp, she aggressively finalized the complex geometric cross-sections for the heavy iron pipes and mechanical pumps required for the irrigation network.

Her mind was entirely consumed by ruthless agronomy and industrial technology - her tactical objectives for tomorrow were vastly too critical to waste a single second on romantic sentimentality.

When she finally pinched out the flame and collapsed onto the heavy duvet, only one absolute, terrifying thought burned in her skull: tomorrow, the Karsfeld machine of progress was going to violently accelerate into overdrive
