Chapter 1: The Skills the Heroes Rejected

I Choose the Skills Everyone Else Rejects

The first person to enter the Resonance Array came out without a Class.

Nate Calder watched from the second row as Owen Pell stepped off the platform. The light beneath Owen’s feet had already died, leaving him pale under the white ceiling lamps.

A doctor met him at the bottom.

"Your Core is stable," she said. "It simply didn’t manifest today."

Owen swallowed.

"So I can try again?"

"Next year."

A year was not the end of his life.

Everyone in the room knew that.

It still looked like one.

Owen had spent two years in the regional preparation program with the rest of them. Two years of physical tests, weapons training, survival courses and written exams.

Now he would watch the others move on without him.

Nobody spoke when he returned to his seat.

The silence lasted until Ethan Ward leaned closer to Nate.

"I’m starting to regret breakfast."

Nate kept his eyes on the platform.

"You ate half of mine too."

"That’s why I regret it."

Nate smiled despite himself.

Ethan always did that. He waited until Nate’s chest became too tight, then said something stupid enough to make him breathe again.

There were twenty-four candidates in the chamber. Most were twenty or twenty-one. A few had waited an extra year after their Dormant Cores were judged unstable.

By the end of the afternoon, some of them would become Awakened.

Others would leave like Owen.

Nate rubbed his palms against his trousers.

Ethan noticed.

"You’ll be fine."

"You don’t know that."

"I watched you survive Instructor Pell’s cooking."

"That was your uncle."

"Exactly. You’ve already faced death."

Nate finally looked at him.

Ethan was smiling, but his right leg had been bouncing for the past ten minutes.

"You’re nervous too."

"I’m about to learn whether the last two years meant anything. Why would I be nervous?"

Their families were waiting downstairs in the public hall.

Ethan’s mother had closed the restaurant for the afternoon, which had caused more panic in their neighborhood than the awakening ceremony itself. Nate’s mother had traded two shifts at the rehabilitation center to be there.

After the ceremony, both families were supposed to eat together.

They had done the same thing after every important exam since the boys were eleven.

Whatever happened today, they would leave together.

A name appeared above the platform.

MARA VENN

A quiet murmur passed through the candidates.

Mara rose from the front row.

Everyone in their promotion knew Mara. She ranked third overall and had finished first in every defensive exercise, including the final breach test, where she had held the line for all six minutes. Outside the regional center, however, she was still just another candidate.

She was not famous.

Outside their regional center, nobody would have recognized her.

Inside it, everyone knew that beating Mara at anything would ruin the rest of her day.

As she passed their row, Ethan gave her a small nod.

"Good luck."

Mara slowed.

"You too."

Her eyes moved to Nate.

"Calder."

"Venn."

That was close to a full conversation for them.

She climbed onto the platform.

The Resonance Array was a circle of dark metal crossed by thin silver lines. Technicians watched from behind reinforced glass along one wall.

Mara stepped into the center.

The lines began to glow.

Blue light climbed around her ankles, then rose along her body.

Her fingers curled at her sides, but she did not move.

The silver lines flashed once.

Words appeared above her.

CORE MANIFESTED

Several candidates breathed out.

A second line formed beneath the first.

CLASS: LAST STANDARD

One of the instructors stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.

A technician leaned toward her screen. The doctor beside the Array stopped writing.

Ethan’s leg went still.

Someone behind Nate whispered, "Serah Vale."

Nate knew the name.

Every child in the kingdom did.

Serah Vale had protected the Western Passage while thousands escaped behind her. Her statues stood in military stations across the kingdom.

Her Class had not appeared in more than a century.

Until now.

Mara stared at the words above her.

For the first time since Nate had known her, she looked completely lost.

The doors at the side of the chamber opened. Two officials in dark military uniforms entered, followed by a woman wearing the crest of the Royal Field Academy.

Cameras unfolded from the ceiling.

A minute earlier, Mara had been one of the best students in a regional preparation center.

By sunset, the entire kingdom would know her name.

"That’s insane," Ethan whispered.

Nate nodded.

Mara had earned every ranking she possessed. She had worked harder than almost anyone in their promotion.

Nate was impressed, and he was happy for her, but the tightness beneath his ribs remained even after he reminded himself that her success had nothing to do with him.

More candidates entered the Array.

A Field Gunner.

A Pulse Medic.

Two candidates remained Dormant.

A boy from the northern district manifested Burden Bearer and tried to hide his disappointment when nobody reacted. It was a useful Class for transport crews, but it offered little combat potential.

Then Ethan’s name appeared.

He stood.

For a moment, his usual smile disappeared.

Nate caught his wrist before he could leave the row.

Ethan looked down at his hand, then at him.

"We still take the capital train together," Nate said.

"That was the plan."

"Whatever happens."

Ethan smiled again, though it did not reach his eyes.

"Whatever happens."

They released each other.

Ethan walked onto the platform.

The Array activated.

The light rose faster than it had for anyone else.

A pressure spread through the chamber.

Nate’s back straightened before he realized he had moved. Around him, the quiet conversations stopped. Even the officials standing beside Mara turned toward the platform.

Ethan stood at the center of the light with his eyes closed.

The silver lines beneath him burned white.

CORE MANIFESTED

The next words appeared slowly.

CLASS: FIRST BANNER

The room went silent.

First Banner.

The Class once carried by Aldren Marr, the first Hero of the kingdom.

The man who had led the surviving armies through the Founding War.

Nate looked toward Mara.

She stood beside the military officials, still pale from her own awakening.

First Banner had returned in the same room as Last Standard, linking Ethan and Mara to Aldren Marr and Serah Vale before either of them had even left the platform.

One of the cameras turned toward Mara before Ethan had even stepped out of the Array.

The officials were already speaking to each other.

Nate could almost see the headlines forming.

Ethan opened his eyes and searched the chamber.

He found Nate immediately.

His face held shock, fear and a joy so honest that Nate hated himself for what he felt next.

Envy.

It came sharp and hot.

His best friend had just received the Class of the kingdom’s greatest Hero.

Part of Nate wanted to look away.

He forced himself to smile.

Ethan smiled back.

Then the officials surrounded him.

By the time Nate’s name appeared, half the room was still watching Ethan and Mara.

He walked toward the Array through conversations about ancient heroes, military programs and national broadcasts.

No one laughed or said anything cruel. Most of the room simply kept watching Ethan and Mara while Nate’s turn began, which hurt more than open mockery would have.

That hurt more than laughter would have.

Nate entered the circle.

The metal felt cold through his shoes.

"Breathe normally," the doctor said. "Do not resist the resonance."

He glanced toward Ethan .

His friend was trying to move around an officer to keep him in sight.

Mara watched too, her arms folded across her chest.

The Array activated.

Warmth spread beneath Nate’s feet.

Then something opened inside him.

It was not painful. It felt like a door moving in a room he had never known existed.

Energy passed through his chest, searching.

The silver lines flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The technicians frowned.

Nate waited for the pressure Ethan had created, or the steady weight that had filled the chamber around Mara.

Nothing came.

The light weakened.

Words appeared above him.

CORE MANIFESTATION: UNRECOGNIZED

Several candidates shifted in their seats.

The doctor looked toward the technicians.

"Repeat the scan."

The Array brightened again.

The hidden door inside Nate opened wider.

For one moment, he felt something waiting behind it.

Then the public display produced the same result.

UNRECOGNIZED

An instructor approached the platform.

"This may be an incomplete Variant manifestation," he said. "Further testing will be required."

The instructor spoke with the careful kindness people used when delivering bad news.

Nate heard what everyone else heard.

Mara Venn had awakened Last Standard.

Ethan Ward had awakened First Banner.

Nate Calder had produced an error.

The applause for Ethan had barely ended when Nate stepped down.

Ethan tried to come toward him, but an official placed a hand against his shoulder.

"Nate."

Nate raised one hand.

"I’m fine."

The lie came easily.

The first phase of the ceremony ended twenty minutes later.

Candidates who had manifested Classes returned to the Array for their Root Skill selection. Those who remained Dormant were taken for medical examinations.

Nate should have gone with them.

Instead, the doctor asked him to remain while the technicians prepared a deeper scan.

Mara entered the Array first.

Three Skills appeared before her.

UNBROKEN GROUND

BODY MEMORY

RETREATING LINE

Nate read their descriptions with everyone else.

Unbroken Ground would anchor Mara’s body and the space immediately around her, making her far harder to move while she defended a position.

Body Memory would allow her body to remember damage it had survived and recover more efficiently from the same strain in the future.

Retreating Line would strengthen allies withdrawing behind her.

Mara studied them for several seconds.

Then she chose Unbroken Ground.

It was the obvious choice for Last Standard.

The other two names began to fade.

Something inside Nate moved.

The hidden door in his chest opened.

The chamber disappeared beneath a layer of pale light.

Words appeared where nobody else could see them.

CLASS MANIFESTED

PATH RECLAIMER

CLASS TRAIT: FORSAKEN CLAIM

A REJECTED SKILL MAY BE CLAIMED OR HELD IN RESERVE

The fading words BODY MEMORY remained visible.

Two choices appeared beneath them.

CLAIM AS ROOT SKILL

RESERVE FOR A FUTURE NODE

Nate’s pulse quickened.

The instructors had taught them that a Root Skill shaped every Circuit built after it.

Body Memory was useful, but it did nothing until its owner had already been hurt. Building his entire path around it without knowing his other options would be reckless.

A reserve changed that.

He could keep the Skill without allowing it to define his path yet.

The thought should have frightened him more.

A Skill rejected by someone else was supposed to disappear. Claiming it had to violate laws nobody had thought to write.

Body Memory continued to fade.

Nate selected the second choice.

RESERVED SKILL ACQUIRED

BODY MEMORY — INACTIVE

RESERVE CAPACITY: FULL

The pale words vanished.

His heart hammered against his ribs.

Across the room, nobody reacted.

Mara stepped away from the Array, unaware that the Skill she had abandoned still existed inside someone else.

Then Ethan entered.

His three choices appeared.

STAND BEFORE ALL

RALLYING PULSE

POSTHUMOUS DISCIPLE

The officials immediately recommended Stand Before All. It had been Aldren Marr’s first Skill and the foundation of every recorded First Banner Circuit.

Ethan looked toward Nate before making his decision.

Nate gave him a small nod.

Ethan selected Stand Before All.

The remaining Skills began to disappear.

The hidden door opened again.

This time, the pull was stronger.

A FORSAKEN SKILL HAS BEEN WITNESSED

POSTHUMOUS DISCIPLE

ROOT NODE AVAILABLE

CLAIM AS ROOT SKILL?

Nate stared at the words.

Nate did not know exactly what the Skill would give him. He understood only that it would bind him to a dead mentor, and that the choice would be permanent.

It might also be the first real decision he had made since entering the Array. Everything else today had happened to him while the room watched Ethan and Mara.

Nate looked at his best friend beneath the lights.

Then at Mara beside the military officers.

First Banner.

Last Standard.

The kingdom had given them the names of its greatest heroes.

Everything waiting for Nate came from what they had left behind.

He accepted.

Cold spread through his Core.

The Skill took root.

The chamber blurred.

Three human silhouettes appeared before him.

All three were dead.

Above the final figure stood a name Nate had known since childhood.
