The cloud layer didn't just break; it ruptured in a violent fucking flash of violet plasma. A two-meter-wide beam punched down from the Spire, detonating against Sector 7’s asphalt with a supersonic wave of superheated air. The blast blew out every reinforced window within three blocks and hurled a wall of pulverizing concrete dust straight down the strip.

Before the shrapnel hit the ground, a metallic screech vibrated through the enamel of Mari’s teeth.

The intersection buckled outward.

A fifteen-ton beast smashed through the load-bearing pillar of an office complex, skidding across the grit on plates of serrated, obsidian armor. Six needle-thin limbs unfolded from its sternum like a mechanical spider.

A Dreadstalker.

An Apex-class exterminator unit—appearing three hundred and sixty-five days before the timeline’s designated fall. What a complete and utter clusterfuck.

Cassian opened fire. The three-round burst from his rifle slammed into its chest plating, throwing sparks and flattening against the armor without cutting a single millimeter deep.

"Move your ass!" he roared.

Mari threw herself sideways as a three-foot bone claw sheared through the air where her spine had been a millisecond prior. The sheer displacement of air tore her jacket. She hit the ground, rolled over broken brick, and popped onto her boots with her steel tactical knife locked in a reverse grip.

She sprinted beneath the monster’s turn radius and drove eight inches of hardened blade straight into the unarmored cartilage of its rear knee joint.

Viscous, black hemolymph squirted across her knuckles, burning like fucking lye. "Shit!"

The Dreadstalker shrieked—a sound like grinding metal gears—and its back leg collapsed.

Same joint anatomy, Mari noted, wiping the burning fluid on her pant leg. The base structural design hasn't changed.

Cassian dumped an entire twenty-round magazine into the exposed tendon. The beast slammed onto its flank. But before the hot brass hit the pavement, thick black filaments erupted from the torn muscle. The fibers stitched the severed tendon back together with sickening speed, pulling the joint back into alignment in less than two seconds.

Standard Apex regeneration takes ten minutes per limb, Mari’s mind raced. This goddamn thing is operating at five hundred percent efficiency. Wrong. Entirely fucking wrong.

A crimson streak burned through the atmosphere above, painting the smoke a deep, arterial red. Mari’s heart hit her ribs like a sledgehammer. She knew that exact atmospheric ignition. She had watched it burn through the sky on the day Sector 7 was wiped off the map—the day a claw blew straight through her chest cavity.

"When I died," Mari said, her voice deadpan against the roar of the fire, "I saw that exact same bullshit reentry vector."

Cassian slapped a fresh magazine into his receiver with a sharp clack. "What the fuck are you talking about?"

The meteor didn't crash; it fragmented. Five dense, pitch-black spheres slammed into the street, shattering the asphalt into deep craters before splitting open like boiled eggs.

Hollows spilled out onto the smoking rubble.

Their bodies mutated on contact with the air. One creature dragged itself forward on a snapped arm; the white bone violently pulled itself back into the socket, wrapped in fresh muscle tissue within seconds. Another’s ribcage split apart with a wet pop, projecting jagged bone spikes outward through its own skin to form external armor. A third opened a jaw that split all the way to its collarbone, releasing an ultrasonic scream that triggered an immediate, echoing roar from every Hollow in the district.

Mari moved without thinking.

She closed the distance to the nearest spawn, ducked inside its sweeping arm, and thrust her knife straight up beneath its jawline. The tip crunched through the palatal bone and pierced the lower brainstem. She planted her boot against its chest, kicked the corpse off her blade, and spun—

A double-clap of gunfire shattered the air. The head of the second Hollow exploded into grey matter and bone fragments.

On the roof of a crushed convenience store, Vesper lowered twin smoking pistols. His silver hair caught the red atmospheric glare, and his face was split by the exact arrogant smirk she remembered from the old world.

"You're fucking welcome, sunshine!" Vesper called down.

Mari’s stomach dropped into a cold abyss. "You motherfucker..."

"Miss me?"

A third Hollow vaulted off the hood of a crushed sedan, claws outstretched for Mari’s throat.

Before it landed, Kaelen materialized in its flight path. His heavy power armor absorbed the impact, his crimson visor flaring as his high-frequency blade swung in a clean, vertical crescent. The Hollow was sliced clean down the center line, its two halves slapping onto the pavement with a wet squelch. Kaelen stepped straight through the bloody divide and locked his visor on Mari.

"You're alive," his vox-caster gritted out.

Mari stopped breathing. Kaelen spoke with genuine shock—because in her original life, Kaelen’s armor had been recovered empty six months before the Northern Wall fell. Vesper had bled to death in a winter trench even earlier.

And Cassian—she shot a glance back at the man currently dumping suppressing fire into the Dreadstalker’s chest. Cassian Rook was supposed to be a fucking corpse because Mari had driven a blade through his heart herself during the military purge.

An ambush Hollow lunged from the shadow of an alleyway. Mari ducked, grabbed its wrist, pivoted, and slammed its face flat against a concrete structural pillar. Before it recovered, she drove her knife straight through its eye socket, burying it to the hilt.

The Hollow didn't die. It raised a clawed hand, wrapped its fingers around the knife’s handle, yanked the steel out of its own skull, and dropped it into the dirt. The destroyed eye tissue bubbled, sealed, and regrew a brand-new, milky lens in three seconds.

Her primary weapon was useless against hyper-accelerated cellular repair.

"Well, isn't that fucking fascinating," Mari muttered.

The Hollow charged. Mari picked up a six-foot length of rusted steel rebar from the rubble. She waited until the creature committed to its leap, sidestepped inside its reach, and swung the iron bar like a bat straight into its kneecap. The joint shattered with a loud crack. As the beast hit the asphalt, she swung the rebar down onto its neck, then its face, hammering the skull until the brain cavity was nothing but liquid paste.

"Die, you ugly bastard!"

Vesper fired two more rounds from the roof, popping the head of a runner approaching her left flank. "You keep looking at them like you're waiting for a damn explanation!"

"I don't need one!" Mari shouted back, wiping brain splatters off her jaw. "The tissue response tells me everything!"

The Spire at the center of the city pulsed a blinding, violet light. A kinetic shockwave hit the street, rattling the teeth in Mari's jaw. Thick, oily black tendrils erupted from the cracked pavement, wrapping around an abandoned two-ton military transport and twisting the reinforced steel frame like a wet rag.

The Dreadstalker stood up, its leg fully healed. Another black sphere smashed into the dirt fifty feet away, releasing a fresh nightmare into the fight.

Mari’s analytical mind locked all the pieces into place: The crimson atmospheric entry. The accelerated spore-eggs. The hyper-regeneration. The premature Spire pulse. The early Apex deployment.

These weren't random anomalies or shifting weather patterns. This was an automated, rigged sequence.

This isn't an altered timeline, Mari realized, her pulse going ice cold. Someone wiped the server, reset the apocalypse, and dropped my consciousness right back at the goddamn start.

The Dreadstalker roared, charging Mari at forty miles an hour.

"Kaelen! Sever the lateral tendon!" Mari screamed.

Kaelen intercepted the charge, his energy blade slicing clean through the Dreadstalker's rear hamstring. The beast pitched forward into the dirt with a deafening crash. Cassian emptied his final magazine into its flank, forcing its head down, while Vesper unloaded both pistols directly into its open neck joint.

Mari sprinted up the hood of a wrecked sedan, launched herself five feet into the air, and jammed the rusted steel pipe directly into the raw wound at the base of the monster's skull. The iron rod sank ten inches deep, crushing the central neural nexus.

The Dreadstalker thrashed violently, dragging Mari across the concrete until Kaelen stepped up and decapitated the fucking beast with one horizontal stroke of his energy blade.

The body went completely limp.

Silence fell over the street, broken only by the crackle of burning vehicle tires. Then, a flat, synthetic voice resonated directly inside Mari’s auditory cortex:

SUBJECT THIRTEEN RESTORED.

Mari froze, her bloody hands still wrapped around the rebar. "What the hell..."

Cassian stepped up beside her, chest heaving. "Mari? What the fuck is wrong with you?"

She didn't hear him. The voice inside her head spoke with cold, clinical clarity:

BIOLOGICAL INTEGRITY: 98.4%. MEMORY RETENTION: 93.1%.

Across the street, the Dreadstalker’s fifteen-ton corpse began to break down at the molecular level, dissolving into a black mist that poured into the open sewer grates.

CYCLE THREE INITIATED.

Cycle Three. The number hit her like a physical strike to the chest.

BEGIN THE EXPERIMENT.

The voice disconnected. The crimson sky burned on overhead.

Mari slowly let go of the steel pipe and wiped a smear of black, acidic blood from her cheek. She hadn't been saved. She hadn't been given a second chance by fate. She had been reloaded into an ongoing, twisted laboratory stress test.

And whoever was running this fucking simulation had made one fatal calculation error: they let her keep ninety-three percent of her memory. She remembered every enemy attack pattern, every system flaw, and exactly how the world died.

Mari turned her eyes away from her resurrected comrades and stared straight at the towering, violet Spire on the horizon.

A cold, vicious smile cut across her face.

"Fine," she whispered, her voice tight with venom. "Let's see how many cycles your bullshit system lasts before I tear it to fucking ground."
