The ridge gave way with a sound like a splitting world. A violent shockwave of shattered ice and black granite punched into the night sky, spraying razor-sharp shrapnel that cratered the snow around them. Behind them, the glacier wasn't just melting—it was collapsing in a roaring avalanche of pulverized stone and ancient frost.
They ran.
Beneath the protagonist’s combat boots, the ground didn't just tremble; it violently heaved. Every thunderous impact from the massive shape lumbering behind them rattled her teeth, the wet, wet sound of snapping pine trunks and gut-churning roars closing in fast.
Sera’s boot caught on a slick lip of ice. She pitched forward, a sharp breath tearing from her throat.
The protagonist caught her instantly, hooking a forearm around Sera’s waist, slamming their bodies together to absorb the momentum. She pulled Sera tight against her chest, feeling the frantic, hammering rhythm of the other woman’s heart through the thick armor.
"You bleeding?" the protagonist demanded, her voice low, raspy from the sub-zero air.
"No." Sera’s eyes locked onto hers—dark, wide, and lethal. She pressed her hand flat against the protagonist’s chest, steadying herself, her thumb digging slightly into the fabric. "I’m good."
The protagonist didn't release her. Her grip tightened, fingers digging into the curve of Sera’s hip, holding her flush against her body for a beat longer than survival required. Sera’s breath puffed hot and white against the protagonist’s jaw, her eyes dropping briefly to her lips.
"Less fucking flirting, more fucking running!" Cassian roared, sprinting past them, his face smeared with soot and sweat.
Sera snapped her head around, her cheeks burning despite the bitter wind. "We’re not flirting!"
Vesper cleared a fallen boulder in a smooth vault, tossing a vicious smirk over her shoulder. "You're practically dry-humping in an avalanche, sweetheart. Move!"
"Shut up!"
The protagonist’s lips twitched, but the joke died in her throat as a second roar ripped through the storm, so loud the air thrummed in their lungs. They scrambled over the final rise of the ridge, skidding to a halt as the landscape dropped off into a vast, suffocating abyss.
Below lay a massive valley locked between razor-backed black mountains. Gnarled, dying trees crowded the basin, their thick, suffocating canopy woven so tight it blocked out the sky entirely. At the heart of the darkness lay a rotting settlement—shattered watchtowers, collapsed stone roofs, and a dead road buried under decades of frost.
And then, the lights flickered to life.
Hundreds of sharp, burning orange points illuminated the suffocating gloom beneath the trees.
Kaelen skidded to a stop, his knuckles white around his rifle. "That’s impossible. This sector was purged forty years ago."
"Then who the hell is down there?" Vesper rasped, unholstering her sidearm.
The protagonist narrowed her eyes, tracking the eerie, synchronized glow. "Nobody."
"What do you mean 'nobody'?" Sera breathed, stepping shoulder-to-shoulder with her.
"They're too uniform. Look at the elevation." The protagonist pointed a gloved finger into the choked forest. "Those aren't campfires."
As if responding to her voice, one of the orange lights blinked.
Then another. Then a wave of them fluttered open in the dark.
"They're eyes," the protagonist growled, sliding her heavy combat blade from its sheath with a harsh clink.
Vesper spat onto the ice. "You've got to be fucking shitting me."
A subterranean boom shook the ridge beneath their boots. The towering horror behind them was plowing through the upper ice shelf. They were out of time.
"We go down," the protagonist ordered, plunging toward the valley floor.
Cassian stared at her like she’d lost her mind. "Into a valley overflowing with apex predators?"
"The monstrosity tracking us owns the glacier," she snapped, not slowing down. "It doesn't know this terrain."
"So you're banking on those things leaving us alone?"
"No," she snarled over her shoulder, her eyes cold. "I'm banking on them trying to eat whatever follows us."
Cassian let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "That is an insane fucking gamble."
"Welcome to the end of the world. Keep up."
The moment they broke the treeline, the air transformed. The temperature plummeted into a violent, unnatural chill that bit like fire into their lungs. The forest smelled of damp earth, copper, and ancient rot.
Sera closed the distance between them, her shoulder brushing the protagonist’s arm. "This isn't normal frost."
"I know."
"Listen."
The protagonist froze.
A sharp, wet click echoed from the gloom ahead. A beat later, an answering chatter rattled from the thickets behind them. Then another from directly above their heads.
"Formation!" Cassian hissed, raising his pulse rifle. They drew into a tight, spine-to-spine circle.
A shape detached itself from the gloom.
It was grotesque—over eight feet tall, skin translucent and stretched so tight over its gaunt frame that thick, black veins pulsated visibly underneath. Its mouth split horizontally across its face, a jagged slice dripping thick saliva, while three glowing orange sensory pits pulsed where its eyes should have been.
"What the fuck..." Vesper whispered.
More shapes stepped from the shadow of the rotting pine trunks. Five. Ten. A sea of translucent skin and twitching jaws.
"They're flanking us," Kaelen warned, his breath hitched.
The protagonist didn't flinch. She scanned the gloom, calculating kill lines. "Twenty-three on the ground."
"How the hell can you count them right now?" Cassian gritted out.
"Because they aren't trying to hide." She tilted her head up. "Look up."
Crouched in the tangled canopy above were dozens more, their long, jointed limbs wrapped tightly around the frozen branches, orange eyes fixed on the party below.
Sera leaned back against the protagonist, feeling the steady, dangerous calm radiating from her. "Plan?"
"They're ambush hunters, but they aren't striking," the protagonist said softly. "They're waiting."
"Waiting for what?"
Before she could answer, a mountain-shattering roar tore through the valley, sending a blast of freezing wind through the canopy. The massive creature from the glacier burst through the upper treeline, snapping ancient trees like dry kindling, black blood oozing from its armor plating.
Every orange light in the forest flared blindingly bright.
"For that," the protagonist said.
With a horrifying chorus of shrieks, the swarm launched themselves from the branches. Hundreds of pale, needle-limbed horrors poured over the massive beast, burying it under a writhing wall of translucent flesh and tearing claws. The giant creature bellowed in agony, slamming its giant fists down, crushing dozens of hunters into black sludge, but the swarm simply overwhelmed it, biting into its soft joints.
Cassian stared in awe as black blood sprayed the snow. "Holy hell. It worked."
"Don't admire it. Move!"
They sprinted through the chaotic bloodbath, putting distance between themselves and the slaughter. Ahead, half-buried in a drift of gray snow, stood a brutalist bunker constructed of heavy, unyielding reinforced steel. No windows. No vents. Just a massive, hydraulic vault door sealed into the rock face.
"There!" Sera yelled.
They slammed against the steel hatch. The protagonist scraped a layer of frost off the housing, revealing a cluster of heavy-duty power conduits embedded in the frame.
Kaelen dropped to his knees, running a scanner over the line. "Pulsing currents. This facility still has power."
Cassian grabbed the manual release wheel and heaved. The metal groaned, but the deadbolts remained fused. "Locked down tight!"
"Out of the way," the protagonist growled. She jammed her combat blade into the seam beside the electronic lock, driving it deep with her palm, then yanked the hilt upward with a sickening crack of sheared pins.
The vault hissed. The heavy deadbolts retracted with a heavy hydraulic thunk.
Cassian blinked. "Where the fuck did you learn to do that?"
"I have a diverse skill set," she said smoothly, yanking her blade free.
Sera flashed a sharp, breathless grin. "I'm starting to notice."
Cassian threw his hands up. "Are you two serious right now? We are in the middle of a slaughterhouse!"
"Focus, Cassian," Sera replied, though her cheeks flushed pink.
The protagonist shoved the heavy vault door open, revealing a pitch-black staircase descending into the earth. They scrambled inside, and Cassian threw his weight against the door, slamming it shut.
The instant the vault sealed, the carnage outside was wiped away, replaced by an oppressive, absolute silence.
They descended the spiral stairs for what felt like miles, the air growing thick, metallic, and heavy with ozone. At the bottom, the stairwell opened into an vast subterranean installation.
The walls were lined with massive, dead processing units, thick bundle cables snaking into the shadows like dormant leviathans. Centered in the middle of the cavernous room was a solitary, glowing structure—a heavy glass pod bathed in a halo of eerie blue luminescent light.
Inside the glass floated a woman.
She looked entirely human, her pale hair drifting weightlessly as if suspended in water, though no liquid filled the tank. Thick biological tubes were driven directly into her neck and wrists, and thin, glowing threads were stitched into her bare torso.
"She's alive," Sera whispered, taking a cautious step forward.
The protagonist approached the glass. As her shadow fell across the pod, the woman’s eyes snapped open.
Pure, piercing violet.
The protagonist froze. The woman raised a frail, bloodless hand and pressed her palm against the reinforced glass, her eyes locked entirely on the protagonist.
"Who is she?" the protagonist asked, her voice dropping.
Kaelen shook his head, staring at the ancient readouts. "There's no file. No designation."
The woman’s lips moved against the glass, forming silent words.
"What's she saying?"
Kaelen leaned closer, reading her lips. His face drained of color. "'You're... late.'"
Cassian swore under his breath. "Late for what?"
The woman's gaze drifted past the protagonist, taking in Cassian, Vesper, and Sera. Her violet eyes widened in sudden, stark terror. She slammed both palms against the glass, her mouth moving faster, harder.
This time, the word was painfully clear.
RUN.
A violent spiderweb crack shot through the center of the glass pod.
Sera instantly reached out, intertwining her fingers with the protagonist's, her grip tight and cold. "Something's wrong."
"Please," a voice rasped—not through a speaker, but directly through the cracking glass, thin and desperate. "Don't... don't let it wake me."
A low, resonant THUD vibrated through the steel floor plates.
The protagonist’s breath hitched. She knew that frequency. It was the same slow, terrifying pulse they had heard beneath the deep ice of the glacier.
THUD.
"What the fuck is that?!" Cassian yelled, raising his rifle.
The glass shattered into a million glittering shards.
A concussive shockwave tore through the chamber, blasting the team off their feet. The protagonist hit the ground, rolling through sharp glass, and immediately pushed herself up, her eyes frantically sweeping the floor.
"Sera!"
"I'm here!" Sera gasped, pushing herself onto her hands and knees. A line of crimson blood was running down her temple from a jagged cut above her brow.
The protagonist was at her side in a second, cupping Sera’s cheek, her thumb gently wiping away the blood. Her chest heaved with a sudden, fierce panic she hadn't felt all night. "You're hit."
"It's just a scratch," Sera breathed, her hand coming up to wrap tightly around the protagonist's wrist. Her eyes burned with an intense, raw heat that had nothing to do with the bleeding. "And don't look at me like I'm made of glass... unless you plan on kissing me when we get out of here."
The protagonist went rigid, her breath catching in her throat as she stared into Sera's eyes.
Even Cassian stopped mid-reload, staring between them in absolute disbelief. "Is this a bit? Is this a bit you two are running?"
Vesper let out a breathless, low laugh. "Well, damn."
Sera’s face flushed a furious red, the bravado slipping for a fraction of a second. "That—that sounded smoother in my head."
A faint, wicked smirk touched the protagonist's mouth. "Did it?"
A shrieking scream tore through the vault, shattering the moment.
They scrambled to their feet, weapons raised.
The woman was out of the pod. She stood barefoot on the sharp glass, biological tubes dangling torn and bloody from her flesh. But her eyes were no longer violet.
They were solid, pitiless black.
Kaelen backed away slowly. "Oh, fuck."
The woman looked directly at the protagonist. The fear was gone from her face, replaced by a cold, predatory smile.
Then, the entire facility came screaming to life.
Every dead screen along the walls burst into blinding, crimson light. Emergency klaxons began blaring, a deafening mechanical siren echoing off the subterranean rock. Crimson warning text flashed across every monitor in rapid succession:
CONTAINMENT FAILURE
SUBJECT 01 AWAKENED
The woman tilted her head, her neck popping with a sickening crunch. Behind her, deep within the pitch-black shadows at the back of the vault, something massive shifted.
Cassian’s weapon shook in his hands. "What is that thing?"
The woman’s grin widened, stretching impossibly wide across her face. "Not what," she rasped, her voice layered with a metallic, booming resonance that rattled the bone in their skulls. "Who."
The lights died.
Absolute darkness swallowed the room.
A wet, rasping breath blew across the back of the protagonist’s neck.
She yanked Sera behind her, locking her arm around her waist, while Cassian, Vesper, and Kaelen drew into a tight, frantic killing box. Nobody dared to breathe.
Then, a voice echoed through the dark.
It didn't come from the woman. It didn't come from the shadow. It resonated directly from the steel walls, the stone floor, and the very air inside their lungs.
"Welcome back."
The protagonist’s blood turned to ice. She had never heard that voice before in her life.
But her soul recognized it.
The nightmare on the glacier hadn't been hunting them. It had been driven here. And this ancient, forgotten vault hadn't been built to keep monsters out.
It was built to keep her inside.
