The ribcage portal didn't lead to a room; it opened into the roaring, wet throat of a mechanical leviathan.

The heat hit them like a bomb—a wall of superheated, ozone-thick air that scorched their nostrils and coated their tongues in the foul, iron taste of vaporized blood and cooked copper. Above them, a cavernous chamber stretched into the oppressive gloom, its ceiling lost in clouds of oily, suffocating smoke. Below them, a catwalk made of rusted iron mesh suspended them over an endless, churning sea of blue plasma and liquefied machinery.

And in the center of it all hung the war machine.

It was no longer just a frame. The biological tissue covering its chassis had swollen—raw, engorged, and pulsating violently under the blinding glare of the reactor core at its chest. Thick, vein-like cables trailed from its limbs, rooted deep into the walls like a web spun by an iron spider. At the center of its chest, behind cracked, reinforced glass, the mutilated woman’s silhouette was fused directly into the machine's internal wiring, her bare skin torn open and weeping black bile into the conduit feeds.

THUD.

The shockwave slammed into their chests like a sledgehammer, nearly pitching them over the railing into the boiling soup below.

"We can't fucking fight that thing head-on!" Cassian screamed over the deafening roar of the core, his scorched shoulder spattering dark, cooked blood onto the floor. "We don't have the goddamn firepower!"

"We don't need to destroy the whole frame!" Kaelen shrieked, clutching his compound-fractured wrist while tears of pain cut through the soot on his face. He pointed a trembling, blood-stained finger toward a raised control gantry thirty yards ahead. "The secondary coolant bypass! Override the manual pump on that platform, and it floods the core with liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze the bitch before it boots!"

"I'll do it," Vesper growled, unstrapping her heavy broadsword and letting it shatter against the grate. "Cassian, on me!"

Vesper and Cassian bolted down the left fork of the catwalk, his rifle barking in short, violent bursts as elongated shapes peeled away from the shadows above.

That left the protagonist, Sera, and Kaelen on the main bridge.

THUD.

The core flared to a blinding, sun-bright intensity. Deep within the machine's chest, the woman's eyes snapped open—bright, electric blue.

LITTLE BIRD.

The psychic voice detonated inside the protagonist’s skull like a concussion grenade. She gasped, dropping to her knees on the iron mesh as thick, warm blood erupted from her nose and ears. Her vision violently blurred, the dark memory of the vault threatening to tear her mind apart.

"No, you fucking don't!"

Sera dropped beside her instantly. She didn't just grab her—she tackled the protagonist against her chest, wrapping one arm tightly around her waist to anchor her against the violently shaking metal. With her other hand, Sera cupped the back of the protagonist's neck, her bloody fingers digging fiercely into her hair to force her face up.

Sera’s face was a horrific mask of soot and fresh blood, but her dark eyes were blazing with a furious, terrifying adoration that cut straight through the psychic static.

"Look at me! Look at me, goddammit!" Sera rasped, her breath hot, frantic, and metallic against the protagonist’s mouth. She slammed their foreheads together hard enough to rattle their teeth. "Don't you dare let her take you from me! You're mine, you hear me?! Stay right fucking here with me!"

The protagonist choked on a lungful of hot air, her fingers clutching frantically at Sera's tactical vest, dragging her as close as humanly possible. The agony in her skull fractured and collapsed under the brutal, overwhelming weight of Sera's presence.

"I'm here," the protagonist choked out, her vision snapping back into lethal focus. "I'm right fucking here."

Sera let out a raw, desperate growl and slammed her mouth against the protagonist’s. It was a filthy, possessive, ruthless kiss—reeking of iron, sweat, and pure adrenaline—a desperate, violent promise that anchored the protagonist back to reality.

"Good," Sera spat against her bruised lips, her thumb dragging roughly across the protagonist's jaw before she yanked her knife from its sheath. "Because I'm not dying in this godforsaken pit without you!"

"We're not dying at all," the protagonist swore, forcing herself to her feet and wrenching Sera up beside her.

A guttural screech tore through the air as three hunters dropped onto the catwalk ahead of them, orange eyes locked on Kaelen.

"Kaelen, get behind us!" Sera roared, hurling herself forward.

She slid under the first hunter's sweeping claw, driving her blade straight up into its soft underbelly. Black, acidic fluid geysered over her arm, but Sera twisted the steel with brutal, merciless force, kicked the heavy carcass off the ledge, and spun.

The protagonist raised her sidearm, tracking the hunter lunging toward Kaelen, and squeezed the trigger on her final plasma cell. The red bolt detonated through its throat, exploding out the back of its neck in a cloud of vaporized meat and bone. The sidearm clicked empty. She hurled the dead weapon into the dark and drew her combat knife, stepping shoulder-to-shoulder with Sera once more.

Across the chasm, Vesper wrestled wildly with a massive, rust-welded iron wheel while Cassian dumped his last mag into the ceiling. "The valve is jammed!" Vesper's scream echoed across the cavern. "It's frozen solid!"

Above them, the titan machine let out an earth-shattering roar. The black steel plates covering its back opened like jagged wings, venting clouds of superheated, blue steam. Its heavy, bladed tail whipped upward, targeting the gantry to crush Vesper and Cassian into paste.

"It's going to wipe them out!" Kaelen shrieked.

Sera locked eyes with the tail, then looked down the catwalk toward the thick, pulsing muscle-cables anchored to the titan's chest. She turned her head, catching the protagonist's gaze amidst the burning blue storm.

There was no fear in Sera's face—only a wild, bloodthirsty thrill, and a deep, unyielding devotion that made the protagonist's pulse explode.

"Cover me," Sera said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that cut cleanly through the deafening roar of the reactor. She reached out, her gloved hand catching the protagonist's in a crushing, bruising squeeze. "Watch my back down there."

"Sera, don't—"

Sera flashed a wicked, gorgeous smile through the blood and soot on her cheeks, spun on her heel, and sprinted full-tilt toward the edge of the catwalk.

She hurled herself straight off the ledge into the open abyss, reaching for the titan's writhing cables.
