The vortex didn't just pull them in. It fucking read them.
Violet light violently tore through the chamber, shattering into thousands of razor-sharp, luminous threads. Data surged through the air like burning veins, wrapping around Mari's arms, binding Cassian’s chest, searing into Kaelen’s armor, and painting Vesper’s face in raw, blinding light.
Then came the memories—relentless, brutal, and utterly fucked.
Cassian, disemboweled by a Hollow beneath the transit station, spilling his guts onto the tracks. Kaelen, screaming as he burned alive inside his fused armor. Vesper, clawing through blood-soaked concrete with half his fucking face melted away.
Mari watched herself kneeling beside each corpse. Again. Again. Again. Different deaths. Same broken bodies.
"Look at it, you bastards!" Mari screamed over the deafening hum, driving her combat knife straight into the glowing conduit.
The blade punched through synthetic flesh, striking dense alloy beneath. CRACK. Black, hyper-corrosive fluid erupted over her bare hand, instantly cooking her skin into smoke. She didn't give a fuck. She shoved the blade deeper, forcing the acid into the central circuitry.
The violet light flickered violently. Suddenly, gravity collapsed inward.
Mari's boots left the ground.
"Mari!" Cassian roared. He lunged, wrapping one arm around her waist and slamming his other fist into a fractured support column. His chest crushed against her back as he anchored them against the void.
"You're getting dragged into a fucking singularity!" he snarled in her ear.
"Then don't fucking let go!"
Vesper staggered through the gravitational shear, his boots sparking against the cracking floor. "What the hell are you doing?!"
"Killing this piece of shit!" Mari twisted the blade.
The Spire shrieked—a high-pitched frequency that bled straight from their ears. Every hologram snapped red. The projections shifted from their deaths to their tactics: Cassian firing, Vesper flanking, Kaelen absorbing fire, Mari executing. Red system code flashed over their eyes:
ADAPTATION. FAILURE. RECALIBRATION. RESET.
"It wasn't just studying us," Mari spat, blood dripping from her nose and splashing onto her jaw. "It was fucking building us."
Another thermal pulse ripped through the room. Thousands of failure states cascaded around them. In one projection, Vesper knelt over Mari's lifeless body, his throat slit, his hands drenched in her blood.
Vesper’s eyes went dead cold. "How many fucking times did we die?"
"Enough."
Cassian tightened his grip on her, his breathing ragged and hot against her neck. "Why?"
"Because it needed to know what kept us fighting, damn it," Mari said, looking back at him.
Above the core, the Spire answered. Glowing, blood-red text locked onto her position:
PRIMARY VARIABLE: MARI
Kaelen’s armored fists clenched until the servos whined in protest. "It wasn't testing combat efficiency. It was testing attachment."
"For every cycle, it changed a variable," Mari said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy edge. She twisted the knife. Enemy strength. Another twist. Terrain. Another. Who died first.
"Until it found the combination that produced the ultimate weapon," Mari whispered, her eyes locking onto the three men who would bleed to the end of the world for her. "All four of us. Together."
The chamber shattered.
The core split down the middle with a deafening metallic tear. From the darkness within, something colossal hauled its ugly ass out. Metal scraped against exposed, flexing muscle. Hydraulic lines hissed as four massive arms unfolded. Its head split vertically, revealing rings of serrated teeth around a blinding sensory core.
ANOMALY IDENTIFIED.
"Of course," Mari gritted out. "Motherfucker."
A plasma spike detonated from its forearm. Cassian tackled Mari sideways a microsecond before the blast pulverized the concrete where she’d been standing. Shrapnel shredded Cassian’s shoulder armor, but he held her tight, rolling through the debris.
Vesper was already airborne. He vaulted over them, both heavy pistols barking in rhythm. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. High-caliber rounds smashed directly into the creature's sensory core, spraying black fluid.
"Over here, ugly bastard!" Vesper taunted, landing in a sprint.
The beast roared, four scythe-like claws tearing up the deck behind him. Vesper slid under the first two, but the third caught his shoulder—CRUNCH. "Fuck!" He went flying, smashing into the bulkhead and losing his primary weapon.
Before the beast could impale him, Kaelen hit it like a goddamn freight train.
The impact sounded like two iron kinetic slugs colliding. Kaelen’s powered suit groaned as he tackled the monster into the core platform, wrapping his arms around its primary limb. "NOW, GODDAMMIT!"
Cassian rose and emptied his magazine straight into the creature’s exposed elbow joints, stripping away armor and sparking servomotors.
"The logic node!" Mari shouted, spotting the pulsing purple core beneath its chest plating.
She sprinted. The creature thrashed, tearing Kaelen off and turning its target array onto Mari. Cassian stepped directly into its path, firing his sidearm to force its attention. Vesper fired left-handed into its eye clusters.
"Little fucking busy here, Mari!" Vesper yelled, catching Mari by the wrist as a shockwave threw her off balance, whipping her forward with all his momentum. "GO!"
Mari launched herself onto the beast’s leg, scaling the shifting armor plates. She drove her knife into a mechanical joint to anchor herself, pulling her body up as black acid splashed across her face and chest, burning like fire.
She reached the creature's neck just as it twisted to crush her.
Mari jumped into the open air, caught a heavy power cable with her bare hand—screaming as it seared through her skin—and swung onto its back. She raised her ruined blade and hammered it downward. Once. Twice. Three times—until the steel bit deep into the logic node.
"You're fucking done."
She rammed the blade home and twisted hard.
BOOM.
The creature froze. The violet light died. For one beat, absolute silence filled the chamber.
Then, the core went blindingly white.
"Mari!" Cassian screamed.
She yanked the knife free as the monster collapsed under her. The Spire began to implode.
"RUN, SHITHEADS!"
Mari leapt into the void. Cassian caught her out of the air, pulling her flush against his chest. Vesper grabbed Cassian's tactical vest, and Kaelen threw his body over all three, flinging his hard-light shield upward just as the first shockwave hit.
BOOOOM.
The shield buckled under the kinetic blast. Kaelen slammed onto one knee, teeth bared. "HOLD THE FUCKING LINE!"
The chamber folded inward. Metal beams twisted like wet paper.
CRACK. The shield shattered into light.
"DOWN!"
They hit the deck as the Spire detonated, swallowing the universe in pure white.
Mari woke to the stink of ozone and burnt blood.
No alarms. No red code. No light.
She opened her eyes to drifting ash. Beside her, Cassian’s arm was locked tight around her waist. Blood dripped from a deep cut above his eyebrow onto her cheek.
"You alive?" he rasped, his voice completely wrecked.
Mari swallowed hard, tasting copper and ash. "Unfortunately."
A rough, breathless laugh pulled from his chest. "Good." He leaned down, pressing a hard, desperate kiss to her temple.
Sprawled beside them, Vesper still had a fist knotted in the back of Mari's jacket. He opened one bloodshot eye. "Next time we break a god, I'm picking the fucking venue."
Above them, Kaelen’s visor retracted with a mechanical hiss. His face was battered, smeared with soot, but his mouth twitched into a shadow of a smile. "It's over."
Mari looked at the dead core. The holograms were gone. The loops were broken.
The Spire had run millions of simulations to break them, assuming love was a flaw in the system. It had failed to calculate what happened when four survivors chose to burn together rather than bleed apart.
For the first time in three cycles—there was no reset.
