Chapter 1 Beast vs. Skullcrusher

I Have Two Superpowers

"Ladies and gentlemen! The moment you've all been waiting for!"

The announcer’s voice boomed through the blown-out speakers, rattling the rusted rafters of the underground arena. A heavy cloud of stale sweat, cheap vape smoke, and the metallic tang of old blood hung thick over the crowd.

"The match between the Beast and the Skullcrusher!"

"Rohan, stand up and get into the ring," a voice barked from the darkness of the locker room tunnel.

*Beast.* Rohan grimaced under his mask. What a ridiculous name they had given him. He gripped the ropes and stepped onto the sticky canvas, feeling the bass from the speakers hum beneath his bare feet. He stood in his corner, waiting.

He just wanted to get this over with and go home. His mom should have started dinner by now, hopefully making something special. A warm meal sounded perfect. After all, today was his eighteenth birthday.

The crowd erupted into a deafening roar as a hulking brute stepped through the ropes, completely blocking out the harsh glare of the arena lights.

The Skullcrusher loomed across from him. The man was a mountain of misshapen muscle, his hot breath smelling of stale alcohol.

"I will crush your brain!" the giant bellowed, slamming his massive, calloused fists together.

The audience fed on the violence, screaming from the bleachers. "Crush his skull! Lift his mask! Break his bones!"

Rohan stood perfectly still. He observed the bloodthirsty chaos around him with complete, cool detachment. Reaching up with a steady hand, he shifted his mask to ensure the thick visor fit snugly against his face.

Satisfied, Rohan dropped into a low, balanced stance, his muscles coiling.

"Are you ready?" the announcer called out.

Before Rohan could even think to nod, the Skullcrusher lunged forward like an unchained animal.

Rohan didn't blink. He smoothly ducked backward, letting the giant's clumsy momentum carry the heavy blow harmlessly past his ear.

Frustrated by the miss, the Skullcrusher began throwing wild, heavy punches. There was no rhythm to his attack, just raw, desperate anger.

Rohan calmly kept his distance. He slid left, ducked right, and bobbed under each telegraphed strike with minimal effort.

Beneath the dark, protective fabric of his mask, a faint red light began to flicker deep inside Rohan's eyes. It pulsed in time with his racing heartbeat. But thanks to the thick, tinted visor, the hidden glow remained entirely invisible to the world.

Seeing a sudden gap in the onslaught, Rohan slipped inside the giant's sloppy guard.

He drove a brutal, precise punch straight into the center of the Skullcrusher's face. A sharp shockwave of impact vibrated clean up Rohan's forearm as the giant's nasal bone gave way with a wet crunch.

The Skullcrusher stumbled backward, gasping for air through a shattered nose. Rohan refused to give him a single second to breathe. He closed the distance instantly, unleashing a relentless volley of punches directly to the giant's head.

*You like to punch others' heads so much, right? Take this,* Rohan thought. His knuckles split against the man's heavy jaw, spraying hot, copper-tasting blood across the canvas.

Desperate and blinded by pain, the Skullcrusher tried to lunge forward to trap Rohan in a suffocating bear hug. Rohan easily jumped back, keeping his eyes locked on the stumbling, bloody behemoth.

*His nose is definitely broken,* Rohan noted, his breathing steady.

During the brief lull, Rohan glanced toward the elevated VIP section. He found his dad immediately. As always, Vikram sat perfectly rigid, watching the match with an intense, unblinking glare that cut right through the smoky air.

Rohan knew exactly why his father watched like that. If anything went wrong—if the fight turned truly lethal—his dad would leap into the ring to interfere as fast as humanly possible.

The thought of his father's constant vigilance brought a small, reassuring smile to Rohan’s lips beneath his mask.

But catching the subtle movement of the mask, the Skullcrusher exploded with pure rage. He assumed the kid was smiling at his miserable, blood-soaked condition.

The Skullcrusher had never lost a single match in his life. Born with a freakish, monstrous physique, he had never bothered to learn proper technique or discipline. His raw, overwhelming power had always been enough to break his opponents.

Yet today, he was being thoroughly dismantled by a kid who didn't even look like an adult. The humiliation stung worse than the broken nose. The giant's volatile temper flared, and something snapped violently inside his mind.

He let out a guttural, primal roar that shook the ring.

With a sudden burst of speed far greater than anything he had shown before, the giant launched himself across the canvas. The acceleration was unnatural, catching Rohan completely off guard.

But Rohan wasn't a novice. Forcing his panic down, he threw his body backward in a desperate attempt to clear the arc of the swing.

Just as he moved, a strange, sudden glow erupted from the Skullcrusher’s fist. The air around the hand crackled, warping with a sudden spike of heat as the luminous fist arc'd directly toward Rohan’s head.

A fraction of a second before the light made contact, a terrifying realization flashed through Rohan's mind: *Crap, did he just awaken his superpower?*

In response to the mortal danger, the suppressed red light flared intensely inside Rohan's eyes, screaming to burst free and protect him. But Rohan clamped down on it, forcing the energy back down into his chest at the very last second. He couldn't let his secret out here, no matter the cost.

The glowing fist struck Rohan's head with the force of a wrecking ball.

The sheer energy of the impact threw his body violently across the ring. Rohan’s vision instantly snapped to pitch black as he lost consciousness.

The crowd’s roar instantly muffled into a distant, watery hum as Rohan’s body slid across the blood-slicked canvas, coming to a dead stop against the bottom rope.

In the elevated VIP section, the careful stillness of Rohan's father shattered in an instant. He vaulted cleanly over the iron barrier, his boots hitting the concrete floor below without a sound as he blurred toward the ring.

Inside the square circle, the Skullcrusher stood frozen for a beat, staring down at his own glowing, trembling hand with wide, bloodshot eyes. The unnatural light was already beginning to fade from his knuckles, leaving behind the sharp, stinging smell of scorched air.

But the stunned disbelief didn't last long in a man who had spent his entire life in brutal, lawless brawls. A dark, jagged grin sliced across his bloody face as he looked down at the motionless boy.

Opportunity knocked, and the giant’s notoriously volatile temper entirely consumed his common sense. There were no rules left in his mind, no referee, and no sportsmanship—only a sudden, murderous urge.

*Kill this brat,* he thought, his chest heaving as he lunged forward, raising a heavy boot to crush Rohan’s skull into the canvas.

Before his foot could even begin its descent, the air in front of him shifted violently.

A figure materialized directly between the giant and the unconscious boy, cutting off the attack before it could land.

Rohan’s father stood there like an immovable block of granite, shielding his son completely from view. He stood a commanding six feet tall, his frame dense and powerful.

Unlike the bloated, overstuffed muscles of the typical arena fighters, his physique was lean, perfectly balanced, and sharp as a razor blade. Not a single line of his posture betrayed any fear or hesitation.

"That’s enough," the father said. The words were spoken quietly, but they carried a terrifying weight that dropped through the noise of the arena like an anvil.

The Skullcrusher sneered, the copper taste of his own blood fueling his blind arrogance. *Why should I listen to you?* he thought, refusing to check his momentum for a common spectator.

Instead of backing down, the giant let out a wet snort and channeled all of his remaining fury into a massive, sweeping punch, driving his fist forward to obliterate this new nuisance.

He never even saw the counter coming.

Before the giant's fist could travel three inches, the father’s leg snapped out in a lightning-fast kick that caught the Skullcrusher squarely in the center of his chest.

The sheer, explosive force of the strike didn't just stop the giant—it lifted his massive, multi-hundred-pound frame entirely off his feet. He sailed backward through the air, crashing through the ropes and flying clean out of the ring.

The crowd shrieked and scrambled out of the way as the Skullcrusher slammed violently onto the solid concrete floor below. A sickening crack echoed through the lower stands as his ribs shattered under the pressure.

The giant curled into a pathetic, wheezing ball on the floor, gasping for air that his broken chest could no longer hold. He tried to push himself up, but his limbs gave out instantly.

Without granting the defeated brute a single backward glance, Rohan’s father turned and knelt beside his son. He scooped the limp, unconscious boy into his arms with practiced ease and strode rapidly toward the rear exit.

He kicked the emergency doors open, stepping into the cool night air of the back alley where his car was parked. Keeping his movements smooth to avoid aggravating any head trauma, he laid Rohan gently across the back seat and slammed the door shut.

The father slid into the driver's seat, threw the car into reverse, and tore out of the gravel parking lot with a deafening screech of tires.

His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned a stark, bloodless white. His jaw was clamped shut, his eyes locked entirely on the road ahead as he navigated the dark city streets.

He drove with reckless precision, rocketing through red lights and completely ignoring traffic laws as the heavy engine roared in the quiet night. Every few seconds, his eyes darted to the rearview mirror, checking the shallow rise and fall of Rohan's chest.

Steering firmly with one hand, he grabbed his phone and hit a speed-dial number, jamming it against his ear.

"Are you ready?" the father demanded, his voice tight, stripping away any room for delay. "My son is unconscious."

"Yes, we are prepared," the doctor's voice crackled instantly through the speaker, alert and solemn. "Bring your son in, Vikram."

The car screeched to a violent halt directly in front of the hospital’s emergency room entrance, the brakes smoking. The father killed the engine, vaulted out of the door, and pulled Rohan out from the back seat.

He carried the boy through the sliding automatic doors, his long strides eating up the distance. Inside the bright, sterile white lobby, a medical team was already waiting, rolling a metal stretcher forward to meet them.

They transferred Rohan gently onto the white sheets, immediately hooking up monitors as they began wheeled him toward the rear corridor.

The lead doctor stopped for a brief second, placing a firm, reassuring hand on the father’s tense, unyielding shoulder.

"He will be alright," the doctor said, checking a quick reading on his chart. "It doesn't look life-threatening."

With those brief words, the doctor turned on his heel and disappeared through the heavy swinging doors of the operating room, leaving the father alone in the silent hallway.
