The bath had been a necessary escape. Orion had soaked in the steaming water until his fingers pruned, trying to wash away the scent of spilled wine, the feel of cold marble under his palms, the echo of screams. He’d scrubbed his skin raw, but the humiliation felt like a stain that had seeped into his bones.

He returned to their chamber wearing a simple, soft sleeping robe of dark grey linen, his damp hair combed back. His eyes were still faintly rimmed with red, the evidence of the evening’s tears not so easily washed away.

The main room was tidy. Someone had cleared the broken glass from earlier. The mended wooden horse sat prominently on the mantelpiece. Abel was already in the enormous four-poster bed. He was sitting up against the headboard, the blankets pooled around his waist.Full novel: I Married the 'Mad' Heir — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He wore only loose sleep trousers. The candlelight from the bedside table flickered over the planes of his chest and shoulders, over the fair skin and the subtle, powerful lines of muscle.

Omegas weren’t supposed to show their chests, but Alphas had no such restrictions. The sight was... formidable. A reminder of the physical power that had thrown grown men across a room just hours before.

Abel watched him cross the room. His gaze was quiet, watchful, like a large animal observing something fragile.

"You came back," Abel said. It wasn’t a question. It sounded like relief.

"Of course I came back," Orion replied, his voice still a bit hoarse.

"We could have taken a bath together."

Orion stopped by the side of the bed, his hand resting on one of the carved posts. "No."

"Why?" Abel asked, genuine curiosity in his tone. "Saves time. And the water stays warmer with two."

How was he supposed to explain? How to articulate the need for those twenty minutes of solitary silence, the barrier of the bathroom door between himself and the overwhelming reality of the day?

How to describe the sheer, daunting intimacy of sharing a bath with this man—this stranger who was his husband, this powerful Alpha whose emotions were a unpredictable tempest, whose body was so vastly different from his own?

He couldn’t.

"It just... doesn’t," Orion finished lamely.

Abel accepted this with a small nod. He didn’t push. He just kept looking at Orion, his golden-brown eyes tracing the lines of exhaustion on his face.

Then, a more practical concern dawned on Orion, sharp and immediate. The bed.

Last night was their wedding night. They had stayed awake most of it, Abel playing on the floor, Orion sitting by the fire in a state of shocked disbelief. Sleep had eventually taken them separately, awkwardly, fully clothed in their exhaustion.

Tonight was different. There was no shock to buffer them. There was only the heavy aftermath, the shared shame, and this massive piece of furniture meant for two.

Abel was already in it. Waiting.

Orion’s throat felt tight. He blew out the other candles in the room, leaving only the single one by the bed burning low. He walked around to his side, the side he’d claimed last night by sheer habit. He hesitated for a second, then pulled back the heavy blanket and slipped underneath.

The sheets were cool. The mattress was vast.

He lay on his back, stiff as a board, staring up at the dark canopy overhead. He could feel the heat radiating from Abel’s body just inches away.

For about three heartbeats, there was stillness.

Then movement.

A heavy, warm arm slid across Orion’s middle. It wasn’t tentative or shy. It was decisive, a claiming weight that pinned him gently to the mattress.

Abel shifted closer. The entire length of his big, solid body pressed against Orion’s side. Orion could feel the hard muscle of Abel’s chest against his arm, the warmth of his thighs. Then Abel nuzzled closer, burying his face against the curve where Orion’s neck met his shoulder. His cheek was smooth, slightly cool from the night air, and he pressed it firmly against Orion’s skin with a soft sigh. You are reading on g.com, the official source.

The proximity was instant, total, and utterly overwhelming.

But more than the physical contact was the scent.

Up close, without the chaos of the party to mask it, Abel’s Alpha pheromones were a palpable presence.

It was the warm cedar and amber, yes, but now, laced through it, was something else—a deeper, richer, more possessive note. It was the scent of an Alpha seeking comfort, seeking to comfort, marking his territory as a place of safety.

It curled around Orion, warm and spicy and undeniably male, seeping into the linen of his robe, into his very pores.

Orion closed his eyes tightly. He felt a tremor run through him that had nothing to do with cold.

He sent a silent, frantic prayer to any god who might be listening. For strength. For composure. For the ability to simply lie here without shattering.

Abel’s breath was warm against his neck. After a minute, he murmured, the words vibrating against Orion’s skin.

"Again. Sorry."

Orion swallowed. "It’s alright."

The arm around him tightened just a fraction. Abel lifted his head slightly. In the dim candlelight, Orion could see his eyes, searching his face.

"You mean it?" Abel asked, his voice small, vulnerable. "It’s really alright?"

He needed the confirmation. Not about the party, but about this. About them, here, in the dark.

Orion turned his head on the pillow to look at him properly. He saw the worry, the fear of rejection. This man who could break furniture with his bare hands was terrified that he’d broken something far more delicate.

"Yes," Orion said, and found he meant it more than he expected. The fury of the event was gone, leaving behind only a deep weariness and this... complicated pity. "I mean it. You were set up. You were overwhelmed. It happened."

Abel searched his eyes for a long moment, then settled back down with another sigh, this one sounding more relieved. His nose brushed against Orion’s collar.

"I don’t like the quiet rooms," he confessed into the darkness.

"The ones they took you to?"

"Mm. The walls are soft. It’s too quiet. You can hear your own heart." He paused. "I heard yours just now. It’s fast."

Orion hadn’t realized. He willed it to slow down. "I’m just... not used to this."

"To what?"

"To... sharing a bed."

Abel considered this. "Didn’t you have a bed before?"

"Yes. My own bed. By myself."

It had been. Desperately lonely. But it had also been safe. Predictable.

"It was quiet," Orion said instead.

"Quiet is bad when it’s inside your head," Abel said, repeating his earlier sentiment. "But quiet out here, with someone... that’s different. That’s good quiet."

He was right. The chaos of the day was locked outside the chamber door. In here, there was only the crackle of the dying fire, the soft sound of their breathing, and the profound, enveloping quiet of the late hour.

"Your scent is different," Abel murmured after a while.

Orion tensed. "Different how?"

"Calmer now. Before, at the party... it was sharp. Like winter air that hurts to breathe. Now it’s... softer. Like the tea you drink. White and quiet."

Orion was stunned. He knew Omegas had distinctive scents, often described as sweet or floral. His own—white tea and bergamot—was considered unusually subtle for an Omega. He’d never had anyone describe it with such... attentive clarity.

"You can smell that?" Orion whispered.

"Mm-hmm. Always. It’s my favorite smell in the house." Abel said it as simply as stating a fact about the weather.

Orion didn’t know what to say to that. A flush crept up his neck, thankfully hidden in the dark.

They lapsed into silence again. The initial panic was subsiding, replaced by a kind of exhausted acceptance. The weight of Abel’s arm was becoming familiar, a grounding anchor rather than a restraint.

The scent of him was everywhere, a warm blanket of cedar and safety.

"Orion?" Abel’s voice was drowsy now.

"Yes?"

"Will they make me go back to the quiet rooms tomorrow?"

The fear in the question was a cold trickle down Orion’s spine. He thought of the Duke’s icy command, of Ashford’s smug suggestion. He thought of twelve guards.

"No," Orion said, and the word came out with a force that surprised him. He turned onto his side, facing Abel, dislodging the arm so he could look at him directly. "No, they will not. You are my husband. This is our room. You stay here. With me."

Abel’s eyes widened slightly in the gloom. He looked at Orion’s determined face, at the set of his jaw. Slowly, a small, real smile touched his lips. It was the first one Orion had seen since before the party.

"Okay," Abel whispered. He lifted his arm again, inviting Orion back into the space against his side.

This time, Orion went more willingly. He settled back, letting Abel’s arm drape over him once more, adjusting until his head was pillowed partly on Abel’s shoulder. It was more comfortable. It felt less like being pinned and more like being... held.

"Good quiet," Abel mumbled, his voice slurring with sleep. His fingers absently stroked a slow pattern on Orion’s arm through the linen robe.

Orion lay awake long after Abel’s breathing deepened into the steady rhythm of sleep. He listened to the strong heartbeat under his ear, felt the rise and fall of the broad chest. The Alpha pheromones were a constant, soothing hum in the air around them, a biological lullaby.

His own heart had finally slowed. The prayers had stopped. The fear of the bed, of the proximity, was fading, worn down by sheer fatigue and something else—a reluctant, dawning sense of belonging.

The mended horse watched from the mantel. Outside, the estate slept. And in the big bed, the disgraced heir and his unwanted husband clung to each other in the dark, forging a fragile peace, one quiet breath at a time.
