Yan Sui couldn’t help thinking that this time, her dream really was shattered.
Her voice fell a little. “Since the engagement’s already been called off, why is he looking for me?”
Secretary An had taken in every detail of her expression and understood.
It seemed the Yan Family hadn’t told her.
“Well, I heard you’d come to the company a few times. President Fu was worried there might have been a misunderstanding, so he specifically asked me to come explain things to you.”
Of course, Fu Yansheng hadn’t been nearly so polite.
His order had been just one sentence: “Get rid of her.”
Yan Sui wasn’t stupid. She understood what Secretary An was really saying.
She hadn’t known the engagement was off, so she’d gone to the company to find him like a fool and given people the wrong idea.
Fu Yansheng was afraid she’d cling to him, so he’d sent Secretary An to make everything clear.
And now Secretary An was taking out the agreement.
“If you have no objection to the compensation listed here, you can sign it.”
A nameless anger flared in Yan Sui. She wanted to swear.
She wasn’t the type to cling to someone. There was no need to be so wary of her.
But Secretary An was only the messenger; she had no reason to take Yan Sui’s anger.
Yan Sui’s small face tightened. “And after I sign?”
Secretary An smiled faintly. “After you sign, you’ll receive a sum in compensation.”
“Without any conditions?”
“Of course there are. Our request is very simple: President Fu doesn’t like loose ends.”
Put simply, it meant: Don’t cling to him.
Yan Sui looked at the amount of compensation written on the agreement and gave a mocking laugh.
“How generous.”
She pushed the agreement back. “Tell your President Fu he can stop worrying. There are plenty of men in the world. I’m not that tasteless. I went to the company before because of a misunderstanding. I didn’t know the engagement had already been called off. It won’t happen again.”
Secretary An raised an eyebrow. She watched Yan Sui get up and leave without trying to stop her.
She didn’t entirely believe what Yan Sui had said.
After all, Fu Yansheng was an eligible bachelor of considerable means. Plenty of people wanted to attach themselves to him.
When she returned to the company, she still reported the matter as it had happened.
“Assistant Qu, should I speak with Miss Yan again?”
Qu Jiang shook his head. “No. Second Master’s got another headache. He’s planning to stay in Yanjiao for a while. Keep an eye on things here at the company.”
Sending Secretary An to speak with Yan Sui had already been giving her more consideration than she deserved.
Now that Yan Sui had left the Yan Family, she posed no threat.
Secretary An asked, “Should we contact Doctor Zhan?”
“Second Master said not to. If we contact Doctor Zhan, Old Master Fu is bound to find out.”
Secretary An said no more. All she had to do was follow orders.
Meanwhile, Yan Sui returned home looking glum and kicked off her high heels.
As she walked, she started stripping off the restrictive clothes she was wearing.
She’d had enough of that dress. It was uncomfortable everywhere.
Yan Sui flopped onto the sofa and stared up at the chandelier.
The more she thought about it, the more she regretted what she’d done. Why had she insisted on saving face just then?
That had been ten million!
Yan Sui grabbed her hair and kicked her legs hard at the empty air.
“Ahhhhhh!”
What a regret.
Fortunately, Fu Qingci came to repay her just then.
He probably couldn’t be bothered to calculate the exact amount. He rounded it off and transferred ten million to her.
But he wasn’t giving her the money for nothing. He required her to sign an agreement, so Yan Sui couldn’t use that IOU to squeeze him for more money later.
Yan Sui had no objection, of course. When it came time to sign, she brought a lawyer along and only signed after confirming everything was in order.
The moment the pen touched the paper, Fu Qingci, seated across from her, said in a low voice, “Yan Sui, think carefully. After today, there’ll be no point regretting it.”
Yan Sui ignored him, hurriedly signed her name, and left as soon as she was done.
When she got home, she took stock of her assets.
She had the most money in cash: more than twenty-three million in all.
The only property she owned was the apartment she was living in.
She had no other assets.
She had no income now, only expenses.
Unless something unexpected happened, she had enough money to live without working.
But yesterday, when she used her superpower, she’d felt her companion entity respond.
Her companion entity was called Suìsuì. It had been with her through the hardest days of the apocalypse.
If she wanted Suìsuì to appear, she’d have to find a place with richer spiritual energy.
Yan Sui didn’t think about it for long. She made her decision soon enough.
As quickly as she could, she sorted through her belongings and listed them one by one on a secondhand marketplace.
She’d only just finished dealing with them when her phone rang.
She’d been added to a new group chat. Most of its members were rich kids from wealthy families, the sort who were only friends on the surface.
Chu Manya: 【Welcome Yan Sui to the group!】
Zhong Yingen: 【@Yan Sui, tell us, what’s it like to be the newest jilted heiress?】
Ye Qiu: 【@Yan Sui, what’s it like to be thrown out?】
Ming Shiyi: 【@Yan Sui, what’s it like to give everything and end up with nothing?】
The four of them, led by Chu Manya, always stuck together.
Yan Sui: 【Ancestor, are you a eunuch? You’re so good at throwing shade. What gives a few low-grade pig spirits like you the right to gossip about me?】
Yan Sui: 【Your brains are smaller than sunflower seeds. Even if you put them up for sale on the secondhand platform, nobody would want them.】
Yan Sui: 【If you’re really that bored, come take turns watching my dog.】
After cursing them out, she left the group and blocked them in one smooth motion.
A moment later, her phone rang again. For a second, she thought it was Chu Manya.
“Jiangjiang?”
Jiang Yeling had been her classmate in high school. From the day they met, the two of them had clicked.
So many years had passed, and they’d each had their own studies and careers to keep them busy.
But no matter how busy they got, they’d never lost touch.
Yan Sui hadn’t contacted her these past few days because Jiang Yeling was in a month-long training camp, preparing for her next drama.
The moment the call connected, Jiang Yeling asked excitedly, “What’s going on online? That bitch Yan Mo—there’s no way she’s known Fu Qingci longer than you have! And she actually has the nerve to get netizens to call you a homewrecker. Does she have no shame?”
“And what do you mean, you’ve quit show business? I told you to sign with our company. I promised I’d make you a huge star! What’s so great about that bastard Fu Qingci, anyway? You gave him your whole heart!”
“Holy crap! Yan Mo actually has the nerve to livestream? Just wait. I’ll get people into her stream to tear her to shreds.”
Hearing that familiar voice warmed Yan Sui’s heart.
“Jiangjiang, don’t get so worked up. Quitting wasn’t impulsive; I thought it through. You’re right—Fu Qingci’s a bastard. I dumped him, and I even slapped him hard several times!”
But Jiang Yeling didn’t answer. It sounded as if she’d gotten absorbed in the livestream.
“Jiangjiang? Jiang Yeling, what are you doing?”
Jiang Yeling drew a sharp breath. “Holy crap! Am I seeing things, or does the place Yan Mo’s livestreaming from look just like your home?”
She spoke so fast as she relayed Yan Mo’s livestream to Yan Sui.
“Yan Mo says her parents, whom she’d been separated from for years, found her and took her home. She’s not an orphan anymore—she has a mom and dad now. She says they treat her really well, and that they threw the adopted daughter who’d stolen her place out of the house. Now she’s their only daughter.”
“Yan Sui, this is your freaking house! My head’s about to explode. What the hell is going on?”
Yan Sui’s tone was casual. “It’s just like she said. I’m not actually a daughter of the Yan Family. It’s not that I was hiding it from you; I only just found out myself.”
Jiang Yeling let out a shriek. “Could it really be like the comments say? You and Yan Mo were born on the same day, and the hospital switched you by mistake?”
Yan Sui scoffed. “What nonsense. My father once saved the Yan Family’s life, so they adopted me. Yan Mo was kidnapped; it had nothing to do with me. It was just a coincidence that the timing matched.”
Jiang Yeling’s freshly done nails tapped against the screen. She was obviously typing, ready to wage a three-hundred-round battle with the livestream’s viewers.
A minute later—
“She has no shame! She actually muted me!”
Yan Sui said, “It’s her livestream. Of course she can mute you. Anyway, forget about what’s happening online. Come over and have hotpot with me.”
Jiang Yeling immediately replied, “Where are you? I’m on my way.”
In less than half an hour, Jiang Yeling arrived at Yan Sui’s home.
When she heard Yan Sui wanted to find somewhere more remote to live for a while, she froze.
“Suisui, are you out of money?”
The Yan Family had thrown her out; they certainly weren’t going to support her anymore.
Jiang Yeling hurriedly pulled out her phone. “I’ll transfer you some money. You can use it for now.”
Yan Sui covered her phone. “I have money.”
“Then why are you going to the middle of nowhere? I’m not looking down on country people. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for a woman to go live alone somewhere remote.”
Yan Sui couldn’t help laughing and tapped her on the head.
“What are you thinking? I want to visit my biological father’s hometown.”
She found the location on the map and handed her phone over.
“Here. Beisu Town, Evergreen Village.”
Jiang Yeling breathed a sigh of relief. “I thought you were about to give up on the world and retreat into the mountains.”
Yan Sui explained her plan. “If there’s somewhere in the countryside that’ll take me in, I’m thinking of settling there and renting this apartment out.”
Otherwise, she’d still have to pay the high monthly maintenance fees, and it wasn’t worth it.
Jiang Yeling said, “Why not rent it to me?”
Yan Sui rolled her eyes. “It’s not like you don’t have a place of your own.”
“I do, but it’s not this big. It’d be hard to find somewhere suitable to buy now, and I like your place. Especially that five-meter-wide bed.”
Yan Sui stared at her, and when she was sure Jiang Yeling wasn’t joking, she agreed.
Then she asked, “When do you start filming?”
Jiang Yeling’s mouth drooped. “In a few days.”
She’d spent a long time preparing for the role. It was only the second female lead, but the character really appealed to her.
The one downside was that Yan Mo was playing the female lead.
She and Yan Mo had never gotten along. Now, after what had happened to Yan Sui, their hostility would probably be out in the open.
Yan Sui reminded her, “Just focus on your acting. You don’t have to get involved in my business. I wasn’t joking when I said I’d quit show business. Don’t pay attention to what’s happening online. Once the buzz dies down, people will forget about it.”
Though Jiang Yeling was a little reluctant, she nodded and agreed.
“It’s probably good for you to get away from all the attention for a while. Chu Manya and the others are planning to throw a party to celebrate you getting dumped by the Fu family.”
They were all from the same circle. Whatever Yan Sui knew, Jiang Yeling knew too.
“Suisui, you have to do your best!” Jiang Yeling suddenly clasped her hand.
Yan Sui blinked. “Do my best at what?”
“Find a man richer and more handsome than Fu Yansheng! Make him furious!”
Yan Sui rolled her eyes. “Keep dreaming. Go wash up and get some sleep.”
