“Don’t even think about it.”
Shen Xi crossed her arms and frowned in disgust.
“Given our relationship, even online, I would never do anything with you beyond holding hands.”
“So holding hands is allowed?”
Cheng Fei remained perfectly still.
“In that case, I suddenly want to hold your hand.”
Shen Xi stepped backward.
“Only if circumstances make it unavoidable.”
“You’re becoming more disgusting by the day.
If possible, I currently want absolutely no physical contact with you.”
“You’re too traditional.”
“You should know that nowadays, some girls will start hugging their boyfriend on the second day of a relationship regardless of who’s standing nearby.”
“I’m not that shameless.”
“Maybe it’s slightly shameless.”
“But Professor Shen, your total lack of willingness to sacrifice yourself for our great exploratory cause disappoints me.”
“No amount of rhetoric can conceal your filthy intentions.”
“If liking you is filthy, then I admit I’m absolutely disgusting.”
Cheng Fei spoke casually while stuffing their loot into the travel bag.
“All right.
We’re done.”
Shen Xi glanced at the bag now slung over his shoulder.
“That’s all you’re taking?”
A large quantity of useful material still remained on the boss.
“Any more and we won’t be able to run.”
“Sequence breaking is all about knowing when to stop.”
“Here.
Carry this bag.”
“Understood.”
The girl accepted the heavy bag, then recalled their route.
“How do we get back?”
“Teleport, obviously.”
“How?
There’s no teleport point, and Return Crystals don’t function.”
“Certain terrain near the continental edge lets you use them.”
“What kind?”
“Usually high ground.
Like getting better phone reception at higher elevations in the wilderness.”
Cheng Fei paused.
“Damn.
The more I explain it, the more it really does sound like reality.”
Shen Xi glanced at the frowning boy.
The corner of her mouth curled upward victoriously.
…
The two successfully returned to Sky Garden, the capital on the First Layer.
Cheng Fei exchanged the boss drops for its limited-edition collectible reward.
A white electric fan small enough to carry one-handed.
“The fan belongs to you.
Everything else is mine.
Any objections?”
There was no way Cheng Fei would make this trip for free.
“Shouldn’t I receive half?” Shen Xi asked.
“Do you have no idea how much you contributed?”
“You think we’re dividing marital assets after a divorce?”
“I wasn’t interested anyway.”
Shen Xi gave him a cold glance and began studying her fan.
“So?”
Cheng Fei was curious as well.
“Can you control the speed?”
“Yes.”
Shen Xi sounded satisfied.
The electric fan possessed a dial and a small display.
Turning the dial changed the RPM shown on the screen.
Shen Xi adjusted it casually.
2379 RPM.
A powerful gust immediately erupted, lifting her silky silver hair into the air.
“This thing spins without being plugged in.”
“Professor Shen, your explanation?”
“Some form of wireless power transmission.”
“These collectibles reportedly stop functioning on the Fourth Layer, clearly because they become disconnected from the game system.”
Cheng Fei nodded indifferently.
“You’re absolutely right.”
“But since we got the fan, can I leave now?”
“No.”
Shen Xi glanced at him coldly.
“You still need to help me complete the research project.”
“Why?”
“Look at the time.
Club activities ended ages ago.
I haven’t even eaten dinner.”
“Club activities are over.”
“So what follows is the time you spend accompanying me as my boyfriend.”
“Capitalists don’t exploit people as efficiently as you do.”
“How about this?”
Cheng Fei made a proposal.
“Give me a hug and act cute.
Then I’ll grudgingly continue accompanying you.”
“Otherwise, we part ways here.”
“Enough nonsense.”
“Finish the experiment with me first.”
“Then we’ll go to the Wanda Plaza near your apartment.
I’ll buy you dinner.”
“???”
“What kind of expression is that?”
“You even know where I live?”
“It’s written clearly in the household-information registration.”
“Does your family own Sakura High?”
“Accessing one student file isn’t especially difficult.”
“I knew your background was ridiculous.”
“Transfer five hundred thousand to me right now or I’m done playing with you.”
“Keep dreaming.”
“If you’re hungry, stop wasting time.”
Shen Xi glared at him and tossed over the electric fan.
“You already understand the method for measuring light speed.
The two of us can finish quickly.”
Holding the electric fan, Cheng Fei suddenly understood.
“So after all that, you want to measure the speed of light inside the game?”
“You’re only realizing now?”
“I’m disappointed in you.”
“You’re hopeless.”
“What’s the point of running into a game to perform an experiment like this?”
“Stop talking.”
“Measure it first, then decide whether it’s pointless.”
“I’ve already chosen the site.”
“We’re going to Indigo Lake.”
The girl turned and started walking.
…
Indigo Lake lay in a remote corner of the First Layer.
Despite its name, it wasn’t a sea but a lake whose water always remained a deep indigo blue.
At Shen Xi’s direction, Cheng Fei rowed a small boat alone to the lighthouse on an island in the middle of the lake and installed a reflector there.
By the time he returned to shore, Shen Xi had assembled the remaining equipment.
The Infinite Electric Fan had been fixed firmly to the ground.
Beside it stood a laser rangefinder with its beam path passing between the fan blades.
Apparently, that was another collectible.
“The scenery here is nice.”
Cheng Fei looked toward the lake.
“Let’s come rowing together next time.”
“Why would we row?” Shen Xi asked while calibrating the equipment.
“A date, obviously.”
“Not interested.”
“With an attitude like that, our relationship won’t last.”
“My dating fee is only paid through next month anyway.”
“That’s true.”
“Don’t you find that tragic?”
“Why not renew for an entire year right now while the mood is good?”
“If you keep talking nonsense, I won’t even renew for half a month.”
“I was too impatient.”
Cheng Fei mimed zipping his mouth shut.
Shen Xi pointed toward the equipment.
“All right.”
“Next, you control the fan speed.”
“Gradually increase it until the rangefinder displays ‘No Signal.'”
“I’ll record the data.”
“We repeat five times.”
“Then we move to Site Two and repeat another five times.”
Cheng Fei examined their crude experimental setup skeptically.
“This can really work?”
“The original experiment at least used several mirrors.”
Shen Xi rubbed her forehead and sighed.
“The rangefinder replaces the original mirrors’ function.”
“If you don’t understand, simply follow my instructions.”
“You’re the boss.”
Cheng Fei approached and began increasing the RPM.
“The laser passes between the blades, reaches the lighthouse, and returns.”
“If the fan rotates fast enough, the returning beam should be blocked by a blade.”
“Then the rangefinder receives no signal.”
Cheng Fei thought aloud.
“The distance traveled by the laser is known.”
“The travel time can be calculated from the rotation speed and number of blades.”
“Distance divided by time gives us the speed of light.”
“Right?”
“There’s no need to explain calculations at the level of a second-grade elementary student.”
Shen Xi held a notebook and watched both displays intently.
“The theory works.”
“But will we actually get results?”
Cheng Fei remained doubtful.
“There’s no way a game simulates actual individual light rays.”
“If the system simply determines that the blades don’t obstruct the beam, then they could spin until they start smoking and nothing would happen.”
“It’s only animation.”
“That assumes everything here is generated by a program.”
“I reject that assumption.”
Shen Xi’s expression remained blank.
“I calculated it.”
“Given the distance between here and the lighthouse, the returning beam should become completely blocked somewhere around thirty thousand RPM.”
“Why don’t we make a bet?”
“Sure.”
“Let’s bet on who buys dinner.”
Cheng Fei immediately reconsidered.
“Wait, you already promised to buy this meal.”
“If I lose, we split tonight’s bill.”
“If you lose, you also buy me dinner next time.”
He was utterly certain of victory.
“Agreed.”
Shen Xi smiled coldly.
