“The Corridor Research Club…” Cheng Fei paused.
“Isn’t that just the gaming club?”
“No.
It’s a separate club.
And it specifically says members can leave early if they have something to do, unlike the lunatics in the gaming club who force everyone to play.”
“Details.”
“I don’t know much.
Just that the president is a top-tier beauty.
A bunch of people from the gaming club apparently tried to defect, but every single one got rejected.”
“They don’t accept traitors?”
“Their grades were too bad, apparently.”
“A gaming club requires good grades?”
“Exactly.
Weird, right?
But someone like you should be fine.
If they reject the second-ranked student in the grade, does that mean the president herself is number one?
At that point she might as well not recruit anyone.”
“Good point.
I’ll try.
As long as they let me leave early.”
Cheng Fei immediately packed his things and stood.
Chen Hao waved from behind him.
“Go forth, Cheng Fei!
Carry my dreams of club girls with you!
You already know my grades, so I won’t accompany you.”
…
Only after leaving the classroom building did Cheng Fei realize he should have asked for the club’s exact location.
Then again, Chen Hao probably wouldn’t have known.
The moment he heard about the academic requirements, he had likely given up.
The guy might be lecherous, but at least he possessed self-awareness.
Cheng Fei went to the basketball courts instead.
During recruitment week, the area served as a club fair.
Large clubs had members stationed beneath sunshades answering questions every afternoon, while smaller clubs posted notices on bulletin boards.
The student council was recruiting here too.
By Academy City tradition, student councils held substantial authority, so their tent drew the largest crowd.
The singing club, swimming club, literature club, and others were all lively as well.
The gaming club had hung an enormous, eye-catching Corridor poster.
Unsurprising.
It was currently the world’s most popular full-dive game.
From a distance, Cheng Fei studied the crowd in front of the gaming club’s tent.
His gaze eventually landed on a girl who instantly caught the eye.
Coffee-brown hair fell to her shoulders, slightly mussed by the wind.
Instead of her school blazer, she wore a burgundy cardigan over her shirt.
The sleeves covered her fingertips, and her skirt was a couple inches shorter than most girls’.
Those little differences gave her a subtly distinctive air.
Her expression wasn’t arrogant, and her facial features were soft, making her seem approachable.
When speaking, she sometimes clasped both hands behind her back, leaned forward, and smiled into the other person’s eyes.
Gentle and playful.
Simply looking at her felt soothing.
She was prettier than the Chinese class representative.
And probably a Corridor player.
Cheng Fei decisively used a Scanner.
[Game ID: Nana s Nana]
[Name: Nagasaki Asuna]
[Strength: 4 — Below Average]
[Perception: 9 — Transcendent]
[Stamina: 6 — Excellent]
[Charm: 8 — Exceptional]
[Intelligence: 8 — Exceptional]
[Agility: 4 — Below Average]
[Luck: 6 — Excellent]
[Eligible for online romance.]
Her Perception was actually Transcendent.
Cheng Fei had thought his own stats were pretty decent.
Now he could only conclude that the world was profoundly unfair.
Judging from her name, she was also an international student from Japan.
Not particularly unusual in Academy City.
At that moment, the girl appeared to sense something.
With her hands behind her back, she turned in his direction.
Her gaze swept across Cheng Fei, and confusion flickered through her eyes.
As expected of Transcendent Perception.
Cheng Fei calmly walked away.
Even though the Scanner said she was eligible for online romance, Cheng Fei wasn’t stupid enough to walk straight over and hit on her.
She would definitely think he was a weirdo.
Besides, he already had Shen Xi.
There was no rush to find another online girlfriend.
Cheng Fei was actually a devoted-monogamy kind of guy.
If his relationship with Shen Xi weren’t purely monetary, he probably would have ignored this System completely.
He arrived at the bulletin board.
It took ten minutes of searching through strange clubs like the camping club, journaling club, and Cthulhu enthusiasts club before he finally found the Corridor Research Club’s recruitment notice.
“Club Activities Building, Room 601…”
If Cheng Fei understood correctly, Room 601 should be on the sixth floor.
He shaded his eyes with one hand and looked at the building in the distance.
After counting carefully, he frowned.
“Where exactly did a sixth floor come from?”
The Club Activities Building clearly had only five floors.
Unless they were counting the basement.
With that question in mind, Cheng Fei entered the building and climbed directly to the fifth floor.
Every room number began with 5.
Wonderful.
A school ghost story.
With no other choice, Cheng Fei knocked on the door of a random clubroom that appeared occupied.
He suspected it was the light music club.
Several pretty girls were sitting around drinking tea and eating snacks.
“Excuse me.
How do I get to Room 601?”
“Directions cost one yuan.” A short-haired girl held out her hand solemnly.
Cheng Fei stared.
“?”
“You’re looking for that club, right?
Go to the rooftop.” Another smiling girl pointed at the ceiling as though this happened all the time.
“Thanks.”
Cheng Fei turned and left.
Definitely the light music club.
The rooftop door wasn’t locked.
The rooftop itself was surrounded on all sides by extremely tall wire fencing, presumably to prevent students from jumping.
When Cheng Fei reached the roof, he discovered that there really was a room up there.
The number on the door read 601.
Cheng Fei looked up at the sky.
The evening sun still radiated heat, baking the half-dead ivy crawling across the wall.
For the next month, this clubroom was definitely going to be unbearably hot.
Thank goodness he could leave early.
Comforting himself with that thought, Cheng Fei knocked.
“Come in.”
A cool female voice sounded from within.
Cheng Fei pushed open the door.
The first things he saw were desks, chairs, and cardboard boxes piled against the walls.
It was easy to imagine that, not long ago, this place had been nothing more than a storage room.
A section in the middle had since been cleared.
Six desks had been pushed together into one large table.
Two mobile blackboards stood against the wall nearby.
Numerous passages and equations had been connected with arrows, accompanied by photographs and printed documents.
Whatever was being planned here looked halfway between a scientist’s research notes and a bank robber’s operation plan.
The south-facing windows were wide open.
Beside them stood a half-finished telescope almost half a person tall.
A girl sat upright on a steel chair, apparently assembling it.
She possessed long, silky black hair with the sheen of satin.
When she looked back, her eyes were equally dark and profound, containing a strange purity.
Her face was exquisitely beautiful.
Unfortunately, she wore no expression whatsoever.
Despite the heat, the ribbon at the collar of her uniform remained tied perfectly.
It formed a stark contrast with Cheng Fei, who had already undone two buttons.
Below her skirt were long, slender legs brushed by fragmented sunlight streaming through the window, pale enough to dazzle the eye.
“The Corridor Research Club?” Cheng Fei asked.
“Yes.”
While asking, Cheng Fei considered whether to use his Scanner.
The girl’s figure might be modest in one particular department, but her face was breathtaking.
She was even more beautiful than the Japanese exchange student downstairs.
And those legs alone would probably earn endless comments online.
Cheng Fei estimated her Charm at no less than 8.
As long as her other attributes weren’t terrible and she was a player, the result was obvious even without a scan.
There was no reason to waste his last Scanner.
“If you have nothing else, please leave.”
Apparently displeased by the way Cheng Fei had looked her over, the girl raised her chin slightly.
“I do have something.” Cheng Fei retracted his gaze.
“I want to apply for membership.”
The girl remained unmoved.
She turned back and resumed assembling the telescope, then sighed as though thoroughly tired of this.
“Student, if you only came because you heard rumors about me, then you can leave.
People who think with their lower bodies are not welcome here.”
“I don’t.”
“You’re not a human being?”
“At least tell me the membership requirements first.
Or are you no longer recruiting?”
“Since you asked.”
Only then did the girl lift her head.
Crossing her arms over her rather flat chest, she said:
“Three requirements.”
Thank you so much for reading until the end.
