“Every strategist knows how to win a battle. Only a few know what a single life is truly worth.”

The morning air carried the scent of burnt gunpowder.

Rows of young recruits stood inside the military training ground, sweat soaking through their uniforms beneath the unforgiving summer sun.Full novel: I Reincarnated as the Last Prince of a Fallen Kingdom — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Today’s exercise was simple.

Urban combat.

No real ammunition.

Only training grenades.

At least…

That was supposed to be the plan.

Captain Adrian stood on the observation platform, quietly watching every movement below.

Unlike most officers, he wasn’t shouting orders.

He simply observed.

A soldier’s greatest weapon wasn’t his rifle.

It was his judgment.

“Slow down,” Adrian said through his radio.

“You’re advancing too quickly. Check the second floor before entering.”

The rookie immediately stopped.

Seconds later—

Bang.

A hidden instructor emerged from the building, marking the recruit as “eliminated.”

The others laughed.

Adrian didn’t.

“Remember that mistake.”

“You only die once.”

The rookie nodded, embarrassment filling his face.

The exercise continued.

Then…

Everything changed.

A metallic sound echoed across the training ground.

Clink.

Time seemed to freeze.

A recruit stared blankly at the object rolling beside his boots.

His face turned pale.

“I…”

“I grabbed the wrong—”

A live grenade.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then panic exploded.

“GRENADE!”

Soldiers scattered in every direction.

Some froze.

Others instinctively ducked.

The rookie couldn’t move.

His legs refused to obey him.

His eyes were locked onto the small piece of steel that would explode within seconds.

Adrian calculated the distance without thinking.

Too close.

Too many people.

No cover.

No time.

He could order everyone to run.

It wouldn’t matter.

Someone would die.

Perhaps several.

There wasn’t enough time.

His body moved before his mind finished the calculation.

He sprinted.

Every step echoed through the training ground.

The rookie looked up.

“Captain…?”

Adrian shoved him away with all his strength.

The young soldier crashed several meters across the concrete.

Then Adrian looked down.

The grenade rested beneath his boots.

Two seconds.

One.

He smiled.

Not because he wanted to die.

But because the answer had always been obvious.

The duty of a commander…

Was to stand where others could not.

He dropped to the ground.

Wrapped both arms around the grenade.

And shouted one final order.

“GET DOWN!”

…

Darkness.

Silence.

No pain.

No sound.

Only endless white.

Adrian slowly opened his eyes.

There was no sky.

No earth.

Only an endless sea of light stretching beyond imagination.

Footsteps echoed through the void.

One.

Then another.

Ancient figures cloaked in radiant robes stood before him.

He couldn’t see their faces.

Only their eyes.

Eyes that seemed older than time itself.

One of them spoke.

“You understand where you are.”

Adrian remained silent.

“…Dead.”

Another figure nodded.

“You sacrificed your life for soldiers under your command.”

“It was my responsibility.”

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

The ancient beings watched him in silence.

No fear.

No regret.

No complaint.

Only acceptance.

Finally—

One voice echoed throughout the endless world.

“Do you know how many men have called themselves conquerors?”

Adrian said nothing.

“They built empires.”

“They won wars.”

“They carved their names into history.”

The voice continued.

“But history remembers another kind of man.”

“The one who chooses another’s life over his own.”

The endless light rippled.

Images appeared.

The rookie.

Years later.

Now wearing the uniform of a decorated officer.

Saving civilians during disasters.

Negotiating ceasefires.

Preventing wars.

Leading rescue operations across nations.

One decision.

One life saved.

Thousands more protected.

“The future changed.”

Adrian quietly watched.

“…Good.”

That single word caused the surrounding silence to tremble.

Another ancient figure finally spoke.

“Most men seek another life.”

“You sought only to fulfill your duty.”

For the first time—

The ancient beings bowed.

Not deeply.

Just enough to acknowledge a soul worthy of respect.

“We cannot return you to your world.”

“But…”

“We can grant you another.”

The light around Adrian shattered like glass.

Fragments drifted into endless darkness.

Maps.

Kingdoms.

Empires.

Castles.

Wars.

Blood.

Fire.

One continent after another unfolded before him.

Then—

One kingdom disappeared beneath crimson flames.

Its banner fell.

Its king died.

Its royal family was hunted to extinction.

Almost.

One child still breathed.

The final heir.

A prince destined to die before sunrise.

A voice echoed through the collapsing world.

“History records his death.”

“We offer you another choice.”

“Live his life.”

“Protect what could not be protected.”

“Not with miracles.”

“Not with magic.”

“But with wisdom.”

“And perhaps…”

“…change history itself.”

The world collapsed.

The endless light vanished.

Adrian felt himself falling.

Faster.

Faster.

Until—

A woman’s desperate cry pierced the darkness.

“Your Highness!”

“Wake up!”

“The soldiers have found us!”

Adrian’s eyes snapped open.

Rain poured from the heavens.

A broken wagon rattled along a muddy forest road.

Beside him sat a frightened woman clutching a bloodstained royal cloak.

Ahead, exhausted refugees urged trembling horses onward.

Behind them…

The distant sound of cavalry horns echoed through the night.

An old knight looked back with despair in his eyes.

“They’re gaining on us…”

Adrian’s gaze drifted to his trembling hands.

They were no longer his own.

Then fragmented memories crashed into his mind.

A kingdom.

A massacre.

A burning palace.

A king’s final command.

“Run.”

The boy’s name.

His name now.

The last prince.

The last heir.

The last hope of a kingdom erased from history.

And somewhere behind them…

The army that had sworn to hunt every drop of royal blood until none remained.

The chase…

Had already begun.

Welcome, everyone!

If you’re looking for a story with overpowered systems, instant cheats, or magic that solves every problem, this probably isn’t that story.

This novel is an alternate-history kingdom-building story set in a world inspired by real medieval history.

While real historical empires, rulers, and events will appear, the protagonist’s actions will gradually create a new timeline.

Think of it as “What if one man changed history?” Expect: – Realistic military strategy – Kingdom building – Politics and diplomacy – Large-scale wars and sieges – Real historical empires and figures – A slow but rewarding rise from nothing I will do my best to keep the historical setting as accurate as possible while still telling an exciting alternate-history story.

Whenever history changes because of the protagonist’s actions, it is intentional and marks the beginning of a new timeline.

History is written by those who survive.

But legends are remembered because someone dared to change it.

I hope you enjoy this journey.
