Kingdoms are not remembered by the castles they build.

They are remembered by the people who refuse to let them disappear.

Before dawn, while the refugees still slept within the watchtower, seven figures quietly descended beneath the ancient ruins.Full novel: I Reincarnated as the Last Prince of a Fallen Kingdom — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Adrian led the way.

Behind him walked Sir Roland, Tomas, four of the most trusted soldiers, and the village blacksmith, whose knowledge of ancient metalwork might prove valuable if they discovered forgotten weapons.

Each carried a torch.

The flickering flames cast dancing shadows across walls untouched by sunlight for decades.

The air grew colder with every step.

Moisture dripped from the stone ceiling, echoing endlessly through the narrow passage.

No birds sang here.

No wind reached these depths.

Only silence remained.

Sir Roland glanced around uneasily.

“This place shouldn’t still exist…”

His voice disappeared into the darkness.

Adrian slowly ran his hand across the ancient stone wall.

The craftsmanship was remarkable.

The tunnel had survived generations without collapsing.

Someone had built it to endure.

And someone else…

Had gone to great lengths to ensure it was forgotten.

The tunnel continued for nearly half an hour before the passage widened.

At its end stood an enormous stone gate.

Everyone stopped.

Carved into the center of the gate was a symbol none of them had expected to see.

The royal crest.

The crest of Adrian’s fallen kingdom.

Though time had worn its edges smooth, the emblem still carried an unmistakable dignity.

Sir Roland froze.

His weathered hands began to tremble.

Slowly…

He lowered himself onto one knee.

Tears filled his aging eyes.

“I…”

His voice cracked.

“I haven’t seen this crest since…”

“…the capital fell.”

For years he had believed every trace of the old kingdom had vanished beneath imperial conquest.

Yet here it stood.

Hidden beneath the mountain.

Untouched.

Protected by silence.

The old knight bowed his head.

“Our ancestors prepared for the kingdom’s darkest day…”

“And none of us ever knew.”

With great effort, the soldiers pushed the heavy stone gate aside.

A deep groan echoed through the mountain as centuries of dust fell from its edges.

Beyond the gate lay another chamber.

The torches illuminated rows of silent figures.

At first…

They appeared to be guards still standing at their posts.

Then the truth became clear.

Skeletons.

Dozens of them.

Each still wore rusted royal armor.

Each still gripped a weapon.

None had abandoned their positions.

Near the entrance rested a broken banner bearing the faded colors of the kingdom.

Its cloth had almost turned to dust.

Tomas swallowed hard.

“They stayed…”

Sir Roland slowly nodded.

“They were ordered to guard this passage…”

“…until the end.”

No one spoke after that.

Words felt insignificant.

Adrian stepped forward.

Without hesitation, he raised his hand in the military salute he had learned in another lifetime.

It was unfamiliar to everyone present.

No knight recognized it.

No soldier understood its origin.

Yet every person understood the respect behind it.

One by one…

The others lowered their heads before the fallen guardians.

Even after death…

They had kept their final watch.

Near one of the skeletons rested a weathered leather satchel.

Its straps had nearly rotted away.

Adrian carefully opened it.

Inside lay a sealed letter.

The wax had cracked with age.

The parchment was fragile, its ink faded almost beyond recognition.

Still…

Enough remained to be read.

The letter was written by the captain of the royal guard.

“Our enemies have breached the capital.”

“His Majesty has ordered the royal family to escape.”

“We volunteered to remain.”

“There will be no rescue.”

“There will be no reinforcements.”

“But if our sacrifice grants the kingdom even one more chance…”

“…then we accept our fate without regret.”

The chamber fell silent.

Adrian continued reading.

The final sentence remained surprisingly clear.

“If one of royal blood should ever read these words…”

“…Live.”

“That alone will make our deaths worthwhile.”

No one moved.

Sir Roland covered his face with trembling hands.

Years of discipline shattered in a single moment.

The old knight wept openly.

Adrian carefully folded the letter.

He knelt before the fallen captain.

Lifting the broken royal banner, he gently draped it across the nearest skeleton.

“I cannot return your lives.”

His voice echoed softly through the chamber.

“But I swear…”

“…your kingdom will live again.”

One after another, every soldier present knelt beside him.

No priest conducted the ceremony.

No royal decree was spoken.

No witnesses remained alive to record the moment.

Yet beneath the mountain…

A forgotten oath was reborn.

The passage stretched deeper into the earth.

Eventually, the tunnel opened into another hidden chamber.

The moment the torches illuminated its interior, everyone stopped in amazement.

Rows of weapon racks still stood intact.

Spears.

Round shields.

Longswords.

Crossbows.

Crates of arrowheads.

Barrels sealed with wax to protect their contents from moisture.

Though not enough to arm an entire kingdom…

There was more than enough to transform frightened refugees into disciplined defenders.

The blacksmith stepped forward.

He examined the nearest sword before drawing it from its scabbard.

The blade gleamed beneath the torchlight.

A smile slowly appeared across his face.

“For the first time…”

“We’re no longer fighting with scraps.”

Hope quietly returned to the chamber.

Beyond the armory waited another room.

Old wooden tables had collapsed beneath layers of dust.

Rolled parchments lay scattered everywhere.

Most had decayed beyond recognition.

Adrian carefully unrolled the ones that remained intact.

His eyes widened.

These were military maps.

Detailed ones.

Forgotten mountain passes.

Hidden streams flowing beneath the cliffs.

Abandoned villages erased from modern records.

Secret supply caches prepared generations ago.

Escape routes known only to members of the royal family.

Sir Roland stared in disbelief.

“The kingdom prepared for invasion long before it ever happened.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“The greatest kings prepare for wars they pray will never come.”

The old knight smiled sadly.

“Our ancestors were wiser than we ever realized.”

Far above the mountain…

The Emperor’s Hawk stood outside the imperial camp, observing the watchtower through a polished spyglass.

Something felt wrong.

The walls remained unusually quiet.

The courtyard showed almost no activity.

Even the smoke rising from the kitchens had nearly disappeared.

The Imperial Commander smiled.

“They’re weakening.”

The Hawk lowered the spyglass.

“No.”

The commander blinked.

“They’re hiding something.”

He continued studying the tower.

“The prince isn’t the type to surrender quietly.”

After a long moment, he spoke again.

“Increase surveillance.”

“No one enters.”

“No one leaves.”

“If the prince has discovered something…”

“I intend to learn what it is.”

The commander saluted immediately.

Once again…

The game between the two strategists evolved.

Deep beneath the mountain, the explorers reached the end of the ancient passage.

An enormous stone door blocked their path.

Unlike the earlier gate…

This one showed no signs of ever being opened.

Dust covered every inch of its surface.

Ancient inscriptions spiraled across the stone like flowing rivers.

At its center rested the royal crest.

Surrounding it were several intricate locking mechanisms unlike anything they had ever seen.

Sir Roland stepped closer.

“I’ve served the royal family my entire life…”

“But I’ve never heard of this place.”

Adrian slowly studied the carvings.

Most of the words had faded.

Only one sentence remained clearly visible.

“Only the blood of the rightful king shall walk beyond this gate.”

Silence settled over the chamber.

Every eye turned toward Adrian.

He stepped forward.

Slowly…

He placed his palm against the ancient royal crest.

For several long seconds…

Nothing happened.

Then…

A deep rumble shook the mountain.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Hidden gears groaned to life.

Ancient mechanisms, silent for generations, awakened once more.

The massive stone door began to move.

Its thunderous echo rolled through the forgotten tunnels like the heartbeat of the kingdom itself.

A freezing gust of air surged from the darkness beyond.

The torches flickered wildly.

As the opening widened, the light revealed the beginning of an enormous underground corridor stretching farther than anyone could see.

Towering stone statues lined both sides.

Kings.

Queens.

Generals.

Rulers whose names had long since vanished from history.

At the far end of the endless passage…

Something shimmered faintly.

Not like fire.

Not like gold.

Something older.

Something waiting.

Adrian tightened his grip on the torch.

He took one step forward.

Then another.

The lost heart of the kingdom had been waiting for centuries.

And at last…

Its rightful heir had returned.

End Chapter

“Empires had conquered the kingdom above. But beneath the mountain… Its greatest secrets had never surrendered.”
