The strongest fortress is not built of stone.

It is built by the wisdom of those who planned centuries ahead.

But a legacy built upon wisdom can survive the fall of kingdoms.

The mountain continued to tremble.

A deep, ancient rumble echoed through the hidden passages, shaking loose centuries of dust from the ceiling.

Small stones rolled across the floor.

The torches flickered violently, their flames bending with every vibration.

Instinctively, every soldier reached for his weapon.

Steel whispered as swords left their scabbards.

Only one man remained perfectly still.

Garrick.

The Last Sentinel stared into the darkness beyond the hidden chamber.

His weathered eyes reflected something none of the others had expected.

Disbelief.

After a long silence, he finally spoke.

“It has been…”

His voice echoed softly through the passage.

“…over three hundred years…”

He swallowed.

“…since the Guardian Gate was last opened.”

Even after guarding the mountain for sixty-three years…

He had never expected to witness this moment.

With Garrick leading the way, the group ventured deeper into the newly revealed passage.

Unlike the archive, this corridor felt deliberate.

Purposeful.

Every stone had been shaped with remarkable precision.

Every arch had been measured.

Every corner carried the quiet confidence of master builders.

As they walked, Garrick finally began to explain.

“When House Ardyn was founded…”

“Our ancestors understood a truth that most kingdoms refused to accept.”

He glanced toward Adrian.

“No kingdom lasts forever.”

“Castles fall.”

“Capitals burn.”

“Kings die.”

His footsteps echoed through the tunnel.

“So they prepared for the day their kingdom would be conquered.”

Tomas frowned.

“They built all of this expecting to lose?”

Garrick nodded.

“They hoped it would never happen.”

“But hope…”

“…is not a strategy.”

He rested one hand upon the smooth stone wall.

“This sanctuary was never meant to hide the royal family.”

“It was built to preserve the kingdom’s future.”

The old Sentinel looked around with quiet admiration.

“The greatest engineers of their age designed these halls.”

“The finest architects shaped them.”

“The kingdom’s greatest blacksmiths forged every mechanism.”

“There is no magic here.”

“Only extraordinary craftsmanship.”

He pointed toward narrow openings hidden within the walls.

“Counterweights.”

“Water-driven gears.”

“Stone locks weighing several tons.”

“It cannot be forced open.”

“It answers only to those who understand it.”

Adrian silently admired the ingenuity of his ancestors.

Even centuries later…

Their wisdom still protected what mattered most.

The corridor gradually narrowed.

Ancient torches burned within carved alcoves, illuminating the walls with warm golden light.

Adrian noticed something unusual.

Every few steps, another inscription had been carved into the stone.

Each began with the name of a former ruler.

Below every name…

Only a single sentence remained.

*”Strength without wisdom destroys kingdoms.”*

A few steps farther…

*”A ruler who fears honest counsel will one day rule alone.”*

Another.

*”History remembers victories.*

*The people remember justice.”*

Adrian slowed his pace.

He no longer viewed the corridor as a passage.

It was a classroom.

Every ruler who walked these halls was meant to leave wiser than when they entered.

The founders had built more than defenses.

They had built a school for kings.

Eventually, the passage ended.

Before them stood the Guardian Gate.

Everyone instinctively stopped.

The door towered nearly three times the height of a man.

Its circular frame was carved from a single slab of stone and reinforced with enormous bronze bands that had somehow resisted centuries of decay.

At its center rested the royal crest of House Ardyn.

Five stone pedestals stood before it.

Each bore a single word.

**Justice.**

**Duty.**

**Wisdom.**

**Mercy.**

**Courage.**

Tomas looked between them.

“…Which one opens it?”

A faint smile appeared on Garrick’s face.

“None.”

He looked toward Adrian.

“They all do.”

The old Sentinel stepped beside the pedestals.

“The founders believed no single virtue could sustain a kingdom.”

“The gate opens only when those virtues are chosen in the proper order.”

Sir Roland looked toward Adrian.

“Only the rightful heir may decide.”

The chamber fell silent.

Adrian stepped forward.

His eyes moved from one word to the next.

Justice.

Duty.

Wisdom.

Mercy.

Courage.

He closed his eyes.

The Hall of Kings.

The Crown Chronicle.

His father’s letter.

The Founder’s Doctrine.

Every lesson carried the same truth.

A ruler’s greatest strength was never courage.

Courage without wisdom created tyrants.

Wisdom gave every other virtue purpose.

Adrian opened his eyes.

Without hesitation…

He placed his hand upon the first pedestal.

**Wisdom.**

Nothing happened.

Several soldiers exchanged nervous glances.

Then Adrian pressed the second.

**Justice.**

A heavy metallic click echoed through the mountain.

The mechanism had accepted the first choice.

He continued.

**Mercy.**

Another deep click.

Then…

**Duty.**

The mountain shook more violently.

Finally…

He rested his hand upon the last pedestal.

**Courage.**

For one heartbeat…

Everything became still.

Then the mountain awakened.

Hidden gears thundered into motion.

Water surged through unseen channels beneath the stone floor.

Massive counterweights descended somewhere deep within the mountain.

Bronze locks released one after another.

The Guardian Gate slowly began to turn.

Its movement echoed like rolling thunder through the ancient halls.

Garrick watched with quiet pride.

“The founders believed…”

His voice softened.

“…that wisdom must always guide courage.”

He bowed his head toward Adrian.

“You chose correctly.”

Far above the mountain…

The Emperor’s Hawk stood outside the imperial camp, surveying the cliffs through his spyglass.

Suddenly…

Hundreds of birds burst from the mountainside.

Their frightened cries filled the sky.

Moments later…

A faint vibration reached the valley.

The Hawk slowly knelt.

He pressed one gloved hand against the earth.

The ground trembled beneath his fingertips.

The Imperial Commander laughed.

“An earthquake?”

The Hawk slowly rose.

“No.”

His gaze never left the mountain.

“Mountains do not wake without reason.”

He stared toward the watchtower.

“Something beneath that hill…”

“…has begun to move.”

At last…

His suspicion became certainty.

The prince had discovered something far more valuable than food.

With a final deafening groan…

The Guardian Gate completed its ancient journey.

A wave of cold, untouched air swept through the passage.

The torches bent beneath the sudden wind.

Beyond the gate stretched a chamber unlike anything they had yet seen.

It was vast.

Yet simple.

Everything within had been built with purpose rather than luxury.

A massive stone table dominated the center of the room.

Its surface was engraved with battle formations and strategic markings.

The surrounding walls bore enormous maps carved directly into the rock itself.

Mountains.

Rivers.

Trade routes.

Fortresses.

Every detail had been preserved in stone.

Wooden cabinets lined both sides of the chamber.

Iron-bound chests rested beneath them, untouched by time.

At the far end…

Upon a raised platform…

Stood a throne.

Not gilded.

Not jeweled.

Not magnificent.

Simple.

Solid.

Unyielding.

It had not been built to glorify its king.

It had been built to remind him of his burden.

Sir Roland slowly fell to one knee.

His voice trembled.

“This…”

He stared at the ancient chamber with reverence.

“…is the War Chamber.”

Garrick quietly nodded.

“The true heart of House Ardyn.”

Behind the throne stood a towering stone tablet.

Centuries of dust concealed its surface.

Adrian stepped forward and brushed the stone clean.

Slowly…

Ancient words emerged.

*”If you stand within this chamber…”*

*”…then Ardyn has already fallen.”*

He continued reading.

*”Do not waste your strength mourning what has been lost.”*

*”Study.”*

*”Prepare.”*

*”Endure.”*

*”Then reclaim what belongs to your people.”*

Silence settled over the chamber.

Adrian slowly approached the throne.

He rested one hand upon its worn stone armrest.

Not to claim it.

Not yet.

But to remember what it truly represented.

A throne was never a reward.

It was a responsibility.

As the others explored the chamber, Tomas approached one of the iron-bound chests near the wall.

He crouched beside it.

Then suddenly froze.

“My prince…”

Everyone turned.

“There is something wrong.”

Sir Roland hurried over.

The old knight’s expression changed instantly.

The heavy iron lock hung broken from the chest.

Not rusted.

Broken.

By force.

Garrick stared in disbelief.

His face lost all color.

His lips parted slightly.

“I…”

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

“I believed…”

He slowly shook his head.

“…no one had ever entered this chamber.”

The torchlight flickered.

The open chest remained silent.

Someone…

At some point…

Had discovered the Guardian Gate before them.

Someone had stood within the heart of House Ardyn.

And someone had left carrying something that should never have been taken.
