The Goblin Chief unleashed a deafening roar, a sound that rattled the decaying tile walls of the subway station and set the loose metal cables swinging.

"Form up!" Captain Vale commanded, his voice cutting through the reverberations. He raised his sidearm, while the two Bureau operatives moved into flank positions, their weapons humming with concentrated mana. "Maintain a defensive perimeter!"

The five Lesser Goblins charged first, screeching as their claws scraped the concrete. Behind them, the two Goblin Warriors strode forward in heavy, rhythmic thuds, followed by the towering Captain.Full novel: I Summon Female Knights — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Vanessa stepped into the air, her dark robes fluttering as a heavy violet aura expanded around her staff. "Insolent vermin."

With a sweep of her hand, a ring of purple energy erupted beneath the advancing horde. The Lesser Goblins were instantly slammed into the platform, their limbs buckling under the sudden gravitational pressure.

The two Warriors stumbled, their heavy armor scraping against the ground as they fought the oppressive aura.

Yet the Goblin Chief barely halted. It let out another guttural snarl, hoisted its massive rusted greataxe with one arm, and lunged directly toward Raphael.

"It’s targeting him!" Elena shouted, her broadsword igniting with brilliant silver mana. She blurred across the platform, intercepting the Chief halfway.

CLANG!

The collision of steel echoed like a cannon shot. Sparks showered over the broken tracks as Elena’s blade caught the heavy head of the greataxe. The force of the blow cracked the concrete beneath her boots, but she held her ground, twisting her blade to deflect the monster’s immense weight.

Raphael stumbled back, his wounded arm throbbing violently as the shockwave washed over him. ’Why me? Out of everyone here, why is the boss looking at me?’

[Hostile Intention Detected!]

[Entity ’Goblin Chief’ perceives Host as the Sovereign Anchor.]

[Primary Directive of Dungeon Boss: Eliminate the Host to collapse the Sovereign Connection.]

Raphael grimaced, clutching his knife tighter. ’Great. The dungeon system literally put a target on my back.’

Elena delivered a swift, mana-infused kick to the Chief’s knee, forcing the behemoth back a step. She followed with a blinding arc of silver light that sliced across the monster’s chest plate, carving a deep groove into the scavenged metal.

The Chief growled, ignoring the wound completely. It swept its massive arm in a violent arc, forcing Elena to backflip away to avoid the broad blade of the axe. The monster didn’t pursue her; instead, its blood-red eyes snapped right back onto Raphael.

"Raphael, move!" Elena yelled, vaulting over a pile of rubble to close the distance.

The Chief charged. Every step shook the concrete as it raised the greataxe overhead, intent on splitting Raphael in two.

"Vanessa!" Raphael shouted, his mind racing as he scrambled backward toward the overturned train carriage.

"Do not order me," Vanessa’s cool voice echoed from above.

A concentrated bolt of purple lightning shot from the crystal atop her staff, slamming directly into the Chief’s shoulder. The impact halted the monster’s momentum, sending dark smoke rising from its scorched iron shoulder guard. The Chief stumbled, turning its head toward the floating Saintess with a furious roar.

"Your opponent is down here, beast," Captain Vale called out, firing three rapid mana-infused shots into the creature’s exposed flank. The energy rounds detonated against its thick hide, drawing dark blood.

The Chief raged, swinging its axe wildly to ward off Vale and Elena. But even pressed on three sides by an A-Tier swordswoman, a Bureau Captain, and a Saintess, the monster kept shifting its weight toward Raphael, waiting for a single lapse in their defense.

Raphael backed up until his spine hit the cold metal of the train carriage. His left arm was nearly numb from blood loss, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

’I can’t just stand here,’ he thought, the system’s warning ringing in his head.

[Reminder: Host must personally participate in dungeon completion.]

If Elena and Vanessa killed the Chief while he cowered behind a train, the system wouldn’t count the victory. He would fail the quest, lose his chance at the Throne Room, and remain the same helpless civilian he had always been.

The Goblin Chief suddenly let out a piercing shriek, unleashing a burst of red, blood-lust mana from its skin. The sudden shockwave forced Vale back and caught Elena off-guard, throwing off her balance for a fraction of a second.

The Chief seized the opening. Ignoring the sword slash Elena landed across its back, it launched itself across the platform directly at Raphael, its axe raised for a crushing downward strike.

"Raphael!" Elena cried out, recovering her footing too late to bridge the gap.

Time seemed to slow. The massive green shadow loomed over him, the stench of blood and rust overwhelming his senses.

Raphael didn’t have the strength to block. He didn’t have the mana to cast a spell.

He looked down at the concrete floor between them, at the severed high-voltage line he had used earlier, still humming softly near the edge of the platform tracks, connected to the ruined junction box.

’Tactical contribution,’ Raphael thought wildly. Instead of running, he stepped directly into the Chief’s path, raising his uninjured right arm holding the knife.

The Chief sneered, bringing the greataxe down with full force.

At the final millisecond, Raphael collapsed his knees and slid forward across the slick, grime-covered concrete, diving straight between the monster’s towering legs.

The greataxe slammed into the platform where Raphael had stood a split second before, shattering the concrete into a cloud of dust and debris.

Sliding out behind the Chief, Raphael drove his knife with every ounce of remaining strength into the back of the monster’s exposed knee joint, right where the leg armor met the tendon.

CRACK.

The knife sank deep, causing the Chief to let out a guttural howl of pain as its leg gave way under its massive weight. The monster pitched forward, stumbling off the edge of the platform and crashing directly into the dark track pit below, right onto the live electrical wires.

"Vanessa, now!" Raphael screamed, pulling himself up against the platform ledge.

Vanessa didn’t hesitate. A beam of concentrated purple energy shot from her staff, driving straight into the electrical pit. The combination of her magic and the raw voltage triggered a blinding explosion of blue and violet light that illuminated the entire subterranean station.

The Goblin Chief convulsed violently in the pit, its screeches echoing through the cavern until, finally, its massive frame disintegrated into dark, billowing mist.

The remaining goblins, seeing their leader destroyed, broke into a panic and scattered, only to be swept away in seconds by Elena’s blade and Vale’s marksmanship.

Silence fell over the subway station, save for the hum of fading mana and Raphael’s heavy, ragged breathing. A familiar glowing interface expanded before his eyes:

[DUNGEON CLEAR DETECTED!]

[Host Participation Evaluation: Acceptable.]

[Calculated Contributions: Tactical Awareness (High), Survival (Moderate), Direct Damage (Minor).]

[SOVEREIGN QUEST COMPLETED: The First Step]

[Reward Issued: Throne Room Access Unlocked.]

Raphael slumped against the platform wall, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the purple mist of the dissolved boss drifted past him.

"That," Elena said, stepping to the edge of the pit and looking down at him with an unreadable expression, "was extraordinarily stupid."

Raphael looked up, a faint, exhausted smirk tugging at his lips. "It worked."

Vanessa floated down, landing lightly beside him without making a sound. Her violet eyes swept over his bloodied arm and dust-covered coat.

"A messy victory," she observed coolly. "But a victory nonetheless."

Raphael closed his eyes as the system notification flashed one final time in his mind, feeling the subtle, mysterious shift deep within his soul, the door to the Throne Room was finally open.
