The familiar ceiling of his Bureau-assigned apartment was unblinking and quiet, but inside Raphael’s mind, everything was screaming.

He lay motionless on his back, his bandaged left arm resting heavily across his chest. The glowing salve Dr. Moss had applied had dulled the sharpest edges of the pain, leaving behind a deep, throbbing ache that pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat. Physically, he was intact.

Mentally, he was standing at the edge of a sheer cliff. With a thought, Raphael summoned the system interface.Full novel: I Summon Female Knights — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

A sleek, silvery-violet screen materialised in the air directly above him, its cool luminescence reflecting off his dark pupils.

[SOVEREIGN QUEST ACTIVE]

- Quest Name: Laying the Foundation

- Objective: Locate and clear a D-Tier Dungeon.

- Requirement: Defeat the Dungeon Boss and personally absorb the Dungeon Core into the Sovereign Domain.

- Time Remaining: 29 Days, 23 Hours, 41 Minutes.

- Failure Penalty: Domain collapse, permanent loss of Sovereign status.

Raphael stared at the silvery-violet text, reading the numbers over and over until they began to blur.

"Thirty days," he whispered, his voice dry and barely audible. "You want me to clear a D-Tier gate in thirty days."

An F-Tier dungeon... the absolute bottom of the threat classification, had nearly taken his life. He had been forced to dive through the legs of a giant goblin and trick it into stepping on a severed power cable just to survive.

If a single mistake against an F-Tier boss resulted in a shredded arm and utter exhaustion, a D-Tier dungeon would swallow him whole. In a D-Tier gate, the monsters didn’t just wield rusted axes; they possessed true mana reinforcement, organized tactics, and hides thick enough to turn away standard steel.

A soft, violet light suddenly warped the shadows in the corner of his bedroom.

Vanessa materialized out of thin air, her long black hair drifting as if submerged in deep water.

She didn’t hover this time; instead, her boots touched the carpet without making a sound. Her dark relic-staff rested lightly in her hand, and her violet eyes surveyed the tiny apartment with cool, unbothered detachment.

"You stare at empty air as though it holds the answers to your weakness," Vanessa said quietly, her voice drifting across the room like silk.

Raphael didn’t look away from his invisible system screen. "I’m looking at my countdown. I have less than thirty days to conquer a D-Tier dungeon and claim a castle, or the system collapses my domain."

Vanessa drifted toward the edge of his bed, looking down at him. "And this frightens you?"

"I’m an unclassified civilian who barely knows how to hold a knife, Vanessa," Raphael said, finally closing the panel with a flick of his mind and turning his head to face her.

"Yes, it frightens me. You saw me out there. I didn’t win that fight because I was strong. I won because I got lucky and used a wire."

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed slightly, her expression hardening. "Luck is a tool for the desperate, not a foundation for a ruler. You were granted the throne of the Sovereign, Raphael. Yet you lie here bleeding over a superficial wound inflicted by a common pest."

"It didn’t feel superficial when it was biting into my bone," he muttered, grimacing as he carefully sat up on the edge of the mattress, clutching his bandaged arm.

"Because your flesh is soft," Vanessa replied coldly, stepping closer until she stood directly before him. "Your spirit is unforged. You possess the authority to command entities that could lay waste to entire realms, yet your own vessel is so fragile that a mindless beast nearly severed your lifeline."

Raphael looked up, meeting her gaze. "I didn’t ask for any of this. The system, or whatever it is, chose me."

"Then prove it did not make a mistake," Vanessa countered sharply, the ambient temperature in the room dropping several degrees as her violet aura flared faintly. "A Sovereign who cannot survive a simple D-Tier trial is unfit to wear the crown.

If you perish in some forgotten pit, my tether to this world snaps, and the realm of shadows returns to dust. I will not allow my existence to be bound to a coward who surrenders before the blade is even drawn."

Raphael squeezed his right hand into a fist, feeling the dry tightness of his skin. Her words were harsh, but they carried a fundamental truth he couldn’t deny. The system wasn’t going to lower its standards for him.

Captain Vale wasn’t going to protect him forever. And the monsters inside the dungeons certainly wouldn’t care about his lack of formal training.

If he stayed as he was, he would die- either killed by a dungeon boss or erased by the system when the thirty-day timer ran out.

"I’m not surrendering," Raphael said, his voice quiet but firm as he looked up into her cold, violet eyes. "I just need to know how to bridge the gap. How does a baseline human survive a D-Tier gate in thirty days?"

Vanessa studied his face for a long, silent moment. The icy edge in her aura softened, replaced by a deep, calculating stillness.

"You stop thinking like a civilian," she said simply. "You cannot rely solely on my power. The dungeon’s boss recognized you as the anchor because your soul is exposed and unshielded. You must learn to reinforce your own body with the latent mana of your domain. You must forge your mind until panic no longer dictates your movements."

"And how do I do that?"

"Through blood and steel," Vanessa replied. "You must seek those who know how to fight in the mortal realm. Learn their ways, absorb their techniques, and temper them within the quiet darkness of your sanctuary."

Raphael took a slow, deep breath, letting her words settle in his mind. She was right. He couldn’t just sit in his apartment and hope for a miracle. He needed real combat training. He needed to understand how Awakened warriors fought, how they moved, and how they used mana to surpass human limitations.

He thought of Elena- her flawless footwork, her effortless parries, and the way she had intercepted the Goblin Chief without a single moment of hesitation. She was an A-Tier operative with years of real combat experience. If anyone could teach him how to survive, it was her.

Raphael summoned the silvery-violet screen one last time, eyeing the glowing numbers of his countdown.

[Time Remaining: 29 Days, 23 Hours, 32 Minutes.]

He closed the interface, his expression hardening as he stood up from the bed. The pain in his arm was still there, but the panic in his chest had settled into something cold, sharp, and focused.

"Thirty days," Raphael muttered, looking toward the window as the first light of dawn began to bleed across the horizon. "Time to start moving."

As for the mention of the system to Vanessa... he didn’t even realize it, and Vanessa didn’t seem to mind either. In fact, she had gotten her answer, or at least, a part of the truth. And the truth was: Raphael wasn’t a mistake. He was chosen by an entity far greater than her.

And she didn’t mind a bit.
