Umbra’s eyes snapped open without warning, as though some unseen thread had been yanked taut inside her mind. One moment she had been suspended in the heavy, dreamless dark of exhaustion, and the next she was upright, spine straight and shoulders tense, a sharp breath drawn into her lungs.

The sudden movement startled the small cluster of onlookers nearby, and a quiet gasp rippled through them in response to her abrupt return to wakefulness.

“Dearest?” Farah whispered softly.

Her voice was gentle and edged with concern, the single word carried as though it were something fragile that might break if spoken too loudly.

Umbra blinked several times, her gaze unfocused at first. Gradually, awareness returned to her expression, and the alertness in her posture eased. She turned her head slightly, and when her eyes found Farah, the tension drained from her body in a visible wave.

She exhaled slowly.

“How long did I sleep?” she asked, her voice still rough with lingering fatigue.

“About a quarter turn,” Farah replied.

Umbra’s brows lifted faintly. “That long?”

There was something almost incredulous in the way she said it, as though time had betrayed her by moving so freely without permission.

“You needed it,” Farah said tenderly.

She reached forward and gently pressed down on Umbra’s legs, encouraging her to relax back into a more comfortable position. With careful familiarity, Farah settled herself onto Umbra’s lap, arranging her wings so they curved off to the side rather than crowding them both. Even folded, they carried a quiet presence, luminous and pristine in a way that seemed untouched by the world around them.

Umbra’s arms instinctively circled her waist.

“What about you?” Umbra asked after a moment, her tone softer now. “When did you last sleep?”

As she spoke, she lifted one clawed hand and brushed it tenderly along Farah’s cheek. Despite the razor sharpness of her talons, the gesture was careful and reverent, the back of her knuckle grazing smooth, dark, radiant skin.

“Just before I crossed the veil,” Farah answered. “I am tired, yes, but I can sleep later. For now, I completed the pointer.”

At that, Umbra’s lips parted in a slow, toothy grin. It was not a small smile. It revealed too many teeth and curved a little too wide to be entirely comforting. From the corner of her eye, she noticed a few nearby observers staring at her expression with poorly concealed unease.

They flinched when her gaze brushed past them.

Umbra did not comment on it. She was used to such reactions, and she knew her wife loved to watch her happy.

Before she could say anything further, Farah reached upward, sliding her arms around Umbra’s neck with a decisiveness that felt almost uncharacteristic. With steady intent, she pulled Umbra down into a kiss.

Umbra’s eyes widened slightly in surprise.

Farah was not usually so bold in public, nor so sudden in her affections. A warmth crept across Umbra’s cheeks, darkening the pale undertones of her complexion. For a fleeting moment, she wondered whether the years they had apparently spent apart had weighed more heavily on Farah than she had realized.

Had she truly missed her that fiercely?

The thought stirred something deep and tender within her chest.

Umbra did not resist. Instead, she leaned fully into the kiss, allowing herself to be drawn closer. Her claws shifted, one hand settling carefully against the angled middle of Farah’s back, the other cradling the back of her head with surprising gentleness. Despite their sharpness, her touch remained controlled, almost protective.

When they finally parted, Umbra rested her forehead lightly against Farah’s, careful not to bump her horn against her..

“I love you,” she murmured, her voice low and sincere. “More than the world.”

Farah’s lips curved into a soft smile that carried both devotion and quiet strength.

“I love you, dearest heart o’ mine,” she replied, her voice warm enough to make the surrounding air feel almost sacred.

Umbra eventually drew back from Farah, though not very far, and allowed her gaze to wander properly around their surroundings instead of remaining entirely occupied by her wife’s face.

Through the narrow plastic slats set into the ceiling above them, she could see that the sky beyond had long since surrendered to night. The faint glow of exterior floodlights cast a sterile, artificial pallor through the gaps, turning everything a muted shade of gray. The hum of overhead fixtures and distant machinery filled the otherwise quiet facility with a restless kind of energy, the sort that never fully slept even when most of the people within it did.

The larger floor, which earlier had been bustling with uniformed personnel and civilian analysts, was now mostly empty. Desks stood abandoned with scattered papers and half-drained cups of something that had likely gone cold hours ago. Only a handful of figures remained, hunched over glowing screens or pacing slowly while reading from tablets, the determined few who had elected to burn the midnight oil in service of duty or obsession.

Umbra’s eyes lingered on them briefly before returning to Farah.

“Can I see the pointer?” Umbra asked at last, her voice threaded with curiosity.

Farah, who had made herself exceedingly comfortable atop Umbra’s lap, shifted slightly but made no real move to stand. Instead, she rested her chin lightly against Umbra’s shoulder and sighed in contentment.

“But I am ever so comfortable on your lap,” the angel replied, her tone carrying an almost theatrical sweetness.

Umbra arched a brow.

“I did not know this wife o’ mine had become a brat,” she said, the word rolling off her tongue with deliberate emphasis.

Somewhere to their right, one of the lingering personnel very clearly heard the exchange, even if they didn’t understand what was said.

Perhaps it was strange to see a very obviously divine angel being so affectionate with someone who looked like a monster from an early 2000s horror movie, being sweet together, would be considered jarring.

The sound of a stifled, involuntary laugh escaped before the unfortunate listener could stop it. It echoed far louder in the quiet space than they probably intended.

Umbra’s eyes flicked sideways.

The person immediately pretended to be extremely invested in their work.

Farah, meanwhile, drew back just enough to peer up at Umbra with a faint frown tugging at her otherwise serene expression.

“I am feeling insulted,” she announced with dignified seriousness.

“Well,” Umbra replied evenly, “if you do not wish to be insulted, then perhaps you should cease behaving like a brat.”

Farah’s frown deepened, though there was no true offense in it, only confusion mixed with stubborn pride.

“What,” she asked slowly, “is a brat?”

Umbra opened her mouth, paused, and then closed it again as if reconsidering the wisdom of her phrasing.

Farah straightened slightly in her lap, her wings rustling faintly as they adjusted behind her.

“I will not move,” Farah declared, settling herself more firmly as though anchoring in place, “until you reveal to me the meaning of this word.”

She attempted a glare, narrowing her luminous eyes in what was clearly meant to be a display of stern resolve. However, there was no venom behind it, no celestial wrath, no divine reprimand. It was, at best, mildly pouty.

Umbra regarded her in silence for a long moment, her expression torn between exasperation and fondness.

Around them, the remaining night workers were trying very hard not to look like they were listening.

“You truly crossed the veil,” Umbra murmured at last, “faced whatever horrors lay between worlds, annihilated an existential threat to this world… and yet this is the hill upon which you choose to make your last stand?”

Farah lifted her chin slightly.

“Yes,” she said with conviction. “I require clarification.”

Umbra’s lips twitched despite herself.

Umbra tilted her head slightly, as though considering how best to phrase her answer, and then allowed a slow, deliberate smile to spread across her face.

“A brat,” she began, her tone taking on a patient, almost instructive quality, “is one who exercises disobedience very intentionally, not out of ignorance or rebellion alone, but with the distinct and rather shameless hope of earning punishment in return.”

Farah blinked up at her. The explanation did not seem to clarify matters, Instead, it appeared to deepen the confusion.

“Why,” Farah asked carefully, her brows drawing together in earnest puzzlement, “would one hope for punishment?”

The question was sincere. There was no teasing in it, no hidden jest. She asked it as one might ask why rain falls or why mortals insist on eating things that are too spicy for their own good.

Umbra’s smile sharpened.

It was not cruel, precisely, but it carried a distinct edge that suggested she was enjoying this far more than she ought to. A glint flickered in her eyes, something mischievous and predatory all at once.

“Well,” Umbra murmured, lowering her voice so that it would not carry beyond the immediate space between them, “that depends entirely on the nature of the punishment.”

She leaned in closer and Farah instinctively held still.

Umbra spoke quietly into her ear, her words measured and unhurried as she elaborated upon the concept with increasing specificity. With every added detail, Farah’s composure faltered further.

A faint warmth crept into her cheeks.

Then it deepened.

Then it spread.

By the time Umbra had finished her explanation, the angel’s face had taken on a very noticeable flush, one that contrasted vividly with the otherwise pristine quality of her complexion. Even the tips of her ears were darkened.

Farah opened her mouth as if to respond, then closed it again then her wings gave a small, unsettled rustle behind her.

Umbra finally leaned back against the wall, entirely pleased with herself. The smugness in her expression was unmistakable.

“There,” Umbra said smoothly. “Now you are informed.”

Farah stared at her for a moment longer, visibly recalibrating.

“L–l–l–let us go look at the pointer,” she said abruptly, the words stumbling over one another in a way that was most unlike her usual composed speech. “Yes. That would be… prudent.”

She rose from Umbra’s lap with far more speed than dignity, smoothing down her garments as though physical order might help restore internal balance. She did not quite meet Umbra’s eyes.

Umbra, meanwhile, remained seated for a beat longer, watching her with open amusement before finally standing as well, entirely satisfied with the outcome of the lesson.
