Tharia kept pace beside Serenya. Or tried to.
The silver-haired woman moved like the forest itself was stepping aside for her. Tharia kept catching herself staring at the way Serenya walked, all grace and effortless perfection that was honestly annoying.
The scent drifting off her wasn’t helping. Cool frost mixed with something sweet, like spring flowers after rain. Tharia’s nose twitched. Her ears tilted forward without permission.
'Stop that. Down. Bad ears.'
They did not stop.
Serenya glanced back, gold eyes catching her mid-stare.
Tharia cleared her throat and suddenly found a very interesting tree fascinating. “So… thanks. For the ‘whole ‘saving me while I was naked and fighting a wolf’ thing. Very heroic.”
“Mmm.” Serenya faced forward again. “You were having a technical disagreement with your clothes in a predator’s territory. Courtesy demanded intervention.”
“Technical disagreement,” Tharia echoed, tail swishing. “You say that like it happens a lot.”
Serenya’s voice stayed dry. “Does it not?”
Tharia’s cheeks flushed. “Okay. Fair. Tragically fair. My life is a disaster and you’ve only known me five minutes. I hate you”
A comfortable silence tried to settle between them. Tharia lasted about six seconds before she ruined it.
“So,” Tharia sped up until they walked shoulder to shoulder. “Powerful cultivator. Shows up exactly when a murder wolf wants fox for breakfast. What’s the story? Hunting bandits? Treasure? Or are you secretly a forest spirit saving pretty foxes?”
Serenya’s lips twitched. “I walk where the signs lead.”
Tharia groaned. “Very wise. Very annoying. I respect it and I also hate it.”
Another beat of silence. Tharia filled it immediately.
“Come on, throw me something,” Tharia pressed. “Bandits? Treasure? Moonlight flower? I’m nosy. It’s my best quality.”
Serenya glanced sideways. “The Dao Threads along this border have been unstable lately. The Sect sent me to observe.”
“Unstable,” Tharia echoed, ears shooting straight up. “Like sky-is-angry unstable? Or ‘chaotic fox making a mess’ unstable?” She grinned. “Be honest. Am I the mess?”
Serenya’s gaze slid over her, slow and considering. “Both are possible.”
Tharia grinned. “So I’m a suspect. Nice. Do I get interrogated? Do you have thumbscrews? I’ve always wanted to be dramatically interrogated.”
“You’re doing a decent job of interrogating yourself,” Serenya murmured.
Tharia’s ears shot up. “Wait— was that a joke? Did the mysterious silver-haired cultivator just make a joke? I’m honored.”
Serenya’s shoulders shook once, almost a laugh.
Tharia felt stupidly proud. 'Look at me. Making the ice queen crack. World domination via bad jokes is totally on the table.'
"You're perceptive."
"I’m nosy. Big difference. Perceptive people notice things quietly. I ask about them out loud until someone tells me to shut up. Usually works. Sometimes gets me chased by wolves. Ask me how I know."
"Does that work?"
"More often than you'd—"
Something hit her on the head.
Soft. Small. Angry.
"Mnyah—?!"
Her tail exploded.
There was no other word for it. One moment it was normal and dignified. The next, every individual hair stood at full attention as the squirrel—fat, territorial, and apparently holding a grudge—launched itself from the branch above, bounced off her left ear with the precision of something that had been planning this, and vanished into the undergrowth with a sound like mocking laughter.
Tharia spun. Her robe strobe-flickered through three different opacity levels.
"Eeh—!"
She grabbed at the seams with both hands, made a noise caught somewhere between a squeak and a hiss, and stood there in the middle of the path, panting, tail puffed to catastrophic proportions, illusion reassembling itself with the air of something deeply tired of its host.
Serenya had stopped walking.
Her shoulders were shaking.
"Don't." Tharia pointed a trembling finger. "Do NOT laugh at the princess."
"I'm not laughing." Serenya's voice was doing considerable work to be true to that statement.
"Your shoulders are laughing."
"My shoulders have no opinion on the matter."
But her gold eyes were bright. The composure had cracked, and something warm slipped through before it closed again.
Tharia forgot to be embarrassed for three glorious seconds. Then her ears slammed flat so fast it was almost comical.

"That squirrel has a death wish."
"It lives in this forest. You are the one passing through."
"I have been passing through this forest for three days. At some point it becomes my forest too."
"I don't think the squirrel agrees."
Tharia looked at the undergrowth where it had disappeared. The undergrowth looked back, innocent and dense and completely unconvincing.
She turned forward with dignity, smoothed her robe, and walked on.
Her tail was still puffed.
She chose not to address this.
The trees thinned. Woodsmoke, canvas, horses—too many people hit her nose at once. The road widened under her feet, packed dirt giving way to stone.
Tharia's ears swiveled forward.
'Oh. People.'
The thought arrived with way less enthusiasm than it probably should have.
They rounded a bend, and the forest opened into a clearing that had clearly been used for this purpose many times before. A caravan rest stop; three large wagons circled near a stone well, horses tied to a hitching post, merchants in travel-stained robes bartering loudly over dried goods. A handful of cultivators in mismatched sect colors sat around a small fire, speaking in low tones.
And everyone seemed to be looking in her direction at once.
A merchant hefting a sack of grain actually stopped mid-lift. Just... stopped. Stared directly at her ears.
Then her tail.
Then back to her ears, like he was doing arithmetic in his head and didn't like the answer.
'Okay, rude, but not unusual—'
A woman in dark blue sect robes glanced over. Probably a caravan guard. She did a visible double-take and whispered something to her companion. Both of them turned to stare.
Tharia's tail curled slightly against her leg. Her ears twitched back.
"What, never seen a fox before?" she muttered under her breath.
"They have," Serenya said quietly, not looking at her. "They're trying to figure out if you're one of the Princesses."
Tharia's steps faltered. "What?"
"Your coloring. Single tail at your age. Traveling alone." Serenya's voice stayed level, like she was commenting on the weather. "The rumors have spread farther than you think."
'Oh no.'
One of the cultivators by the fire was watching now. Not hostile. Just... watching. His hand rested near the sword propped against his knee. Casual. Alert.
Tharia felt her robe flicker from pure, creeping anxiety.
She forced it stable with a sharp push of qi, but her hands had gone cold.
"So what do I do?" she asked, keeping her voice low.
Serenya shifted. Subtle, but suddenly she was walking half a step ahead, her presence a quiet barrier between Tharia and the rest stop. "Stay close. Don't confirm anything. Let them wonder."
The cultivator's eyes tracked them as they skirted the edge of the clearing, heading toward the well. Another sect member leaned over and murmured something Tharia couldn't hear.
Her Chaos Qi surged.
She didn't mean for it to. It just... reacted. Like something in her chest had decided it didn't like being watched by people with weapons, and it was going to do something about it.
The illusion robe flared. Not translucent. Not flickering. Solid. Bright. Almost heavy, like it had thickened into actual armor, the violet fabric shimmering with an intensity that made the air around her hum faintly.
Tharia froze mid-step, staring down at herself.
'What the—'

Secondary Note: Yes, your robe just went full battle-mode. No, you didn't do that on purpose.

'You couldn't have mentioned this BEFORE?!' she thought furiously at the glowing text.
The System, predictably, said nothing.
Serenya glanced at the sudden brightness of Tharia's robe. Then at Tharia. Something shifted in her expression. Not surprise, exactly. Something closer to approval. Or relief.
"Good," she said quietly, almost to herself. "Your instincts are waking up."
They walked past the well without stopping.
The cultivators watched. One of them opened his mouth like he was going to call out, but Serenya's gaze slid toward him; calm, steady, and carrying the unmistakable weight of someone who could unravel you with a thought if you made the wrong move.
The cultivator closed his mouth.
They kept walking, leaving the rest stop behind as the forest swallowed them again.
Tharia didn't relax until the sounds of the caravan faded entirely, and even then her robe stayed heavier than it should have been, the Chaos Qi still humming defensively under her skin.
"What just happened?" she asked, voice tight.
"Your power recognized a threat." Serenya's tone was matter-of-fact. "It responded."
"By turning my robe into... what, armor?"
"Something like that."
Tharia stared at the shimmering fabric. It was already starting to soften again, fading back toward its usual weight, but the memory of it lingered—solid, protective, almost alive.
'Okay. So my robe has opinions now. Great. That's totally normal.'
She looked up at Serenya, who was still walking with that same calm, unbothered grace, like she hadn't just casually intimidated a cultivator with her eyes alone.
"You're terrifying," Tharia said.
Serenya's lips curved. Just slightly. "Thank you."
The road stretched ahead, winding deeper into the forest. The city was still miles away—Tharia could feel the distance in the qi density shifting around them, growing heavier as they moved closer to civilization.
'So people are already looking for me. Great. Just great.'
Her tail swished nervously.

[POV: The Border Peaks — The Caravane Rest Stop]
"Did you see her?"
The outer disciple's voice was low, but the hunger in it was loud enough.
His companion leaned against the rest’s outer wall, eyes still tracking the forest road below where the merchant caravans gathered before the final approach to the city. "Fox-girl. Violet hair. Single tail. Just passed through the rest stop with another cultivator."
"That's the Ninth Princess." The first disciple grinned. "Only she travels alone."
The word hung between them like fresh blood.
"The elders said the Kitsune royals don't leave the empire without escorts. She's either exiled or on a trial." A pause. "Either way, no one's coming for her."
"That female cultivator won't stay with her forever."
"No," his companion agreed. "She won't."
Neither of them said what they were thinking. They didn't need to.

Serenya glanced at her. "Did you say something?"
"Nope. Just... thinking out loud."
Her tail swished once, still slightly puffed from the caravan encounter.
The System, as always, said nothing.
