Chapter 10: Not A Good Idea

I Was Summoned as the Weakest Hero, But I Awakened a Military System

John stepped up to the massive iron control rig at the center of the wooden freight platform.

He grabbed the thick cast-iron clutch lever, braced his tactical boot against the platform frame, and yanked it back with a heavy mechanical CLUNK.

RUMBLE-RUMBLE-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK!

The massive, steel-wound cables snapped taut overhead. The entire platform shuddered, iron wheels locking onto the vertical guide rails as the heavy freight lift began its noisy ascent up the vertical shaft.

John backed against the wooden guardrail, slinging his FN SCAR-H to his chest at a high-ready position while keeping his eyes locked upward into the dark shaft. The air grew progressively cooler, the stifling heat and sulfur fumes of the lower mines giving way to a crisp, fresh updraft that carried the unmistakable scent of damp earth, pine resin, and open air.

"A real breeze," John whispered into his headset mic, a faint grin touching his lips behind his tactical mask. "It’s actually the surface."

For nearly three minutes, the steam lift creaked upward through hundreds of feet of solid rock. Slowly, the dark granite shaft gave way to rough-hewn stone archways, until the lift finally reached the top of the shaft and locked into place with a violent, metallic BANG.

John stepped off the wooden platform, emerging from the dark mouth of a massive cave system onto a rocky hillside.

He looked up. A vast, dark night sky stretched above him, dotted with unfamiliar constellations and two pale, glowing moons—one silvery white, the other a faint, ethereal crimson.

"Finally out of that hellhole," John muttered, lowering his AN/PVS-31A night vision goggles onto his helmet to take in the landscape with his bare eyes.

He took three steps forward onto the overlook—and froze.

"Wait... what the fuck?"

The initial satisfaction of reaching the surface vanished instantly.

Spread out across the vast, bowl-shaped valley below him wasn’t an uninhabited wilderness or a human border town. It was a staggering, sprawling military metropolis built entirely of rough stone, iron-reinforced timber, and black iron spikes.

Thousands of flickering bonfires and towering iron braziers illuminated a sea of leather tents, massive stone fortresses, and smoking siege workshops that stretched as far as the eye could see.

The air vibrated with a terrifying, rhythmic roar—the thunderous pounding of drums, the clashing of iron shields, and the guttural war cries of a massive army.

John brought his night vision goggles back over his eyes and zoomed his HUD optics in, running a rapid perimeter assessment across the valley floor.

Towers of crude iron rose forty feet above the encampments, manned by hundreds of Orc Snipers armed with heavy ballistas. Massive war beasts—thirty-foot, armored dire-mammoths—were being loaded with iron armor plates near the forge pits, while regiment after regiment of heavily armored Orc Legions marched in tight formation across massive parade grounds.

He hadn’t just exited the dungeon into the surface world.

He had walked straight into the heart of an entire Orc Empire’s military staging ground.

John crouched low behind a jagged granite boulder on the hillside, his mind racing as his maxed-out Combat Perception mapped the sheer scale of the threat. The mine on Floor 7 wasn’t just a random dungeon level—it was the primary underground resource artery directly feeding the war machine of the army sitting right in front of him.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Heavy, iron-shod boots echoed on the stone path just twenty meters below his position. A twelve-man surface patrol—far heavier armored than the labor guards below, wielding massive halberds and spiked iron shields—was making its rounds toward the cave entrance.

The teleporter was now looking enticing as a way out.

Fighting a fifteen-thousand-man army solo in an open valley was pure suicide. Even with his maxed-out skills and infinite arsenal, he’d run out of cover, get surrounded by heavy siege ballistas, and get ground to dust under the boots of twenty-foot war beasts before he could make a dent in their numbers.

"Yeah, fuck this," John muttered, his voice flat as he backed away from the overlook on his hands and knees, keeping his profile below the granite boulder. "I’m crazy, not retarded."

He didn’t hesitate. Pivoting smoothly on his boots, he slipped back into the shadowed mouth of the cave before the twelve-man surface patrol could reach the crest of the trail.

He lunged onto the wooden freight platform, grabbed the cast-iron clutch lever, and slammed it forward into reverse.

CLANK-RUMBLE-VRRRRRR!

The heavy steel cables groaned, the steam-driven gears reversing direction as the freight lift dropped out of the surface cavern and plunged back down into the dark, vertical shaft. The crisp pine breeze and the distant thunder of Orc war drums vanished, replaced once again by the suffocating heat, damp granite, and sulfurous stench of the mines.

As the lift creaked three hundred feet down into the earth, John pulled out the crude hide map he had looted off the Orc Taskmaster.

He held it under the white-phosphor glow of his AN/PVS-31A night vision goggles, tracing his finger past the central processing hub and the freight lines toward the far eastern sector of the floor.

There, etched in dark charcoal near a heavily fortified magma chamber, was the symbol of the circular dais.

"The surface exit is a death sentence, but the teleporter goes deeper," John reasoned, his cold, pragmatic mindset taking back full control. "Floor seven boss it is."

BANG!

The freight lift hit the bottom of the shaft with a heavy metallic shudder, locking into the rail tracks of the processing hub.

John stepped off the platform, stepping over the smoldering remains of the Berserkers he had wiped out earlier. He didn’t waste a single second lingering in the hub. Keeping his SCAR-H tucked firmly into his shoulder, he sprinted down the eastern rail line, following the raw heat radiating from the magma veins.

The air grew scorching hot, sweat beading under his tactical mask despite his maxed-out Physical Conditioning. Up ahead, the stone walls glowed with dull orange light as the tunnel expanded into a massive, cavernous arena surrounded by rivers of molten iron.

Standing in the center of the arena, right beside the golden-glowing exit altar, was a massive, nine-foot Orc Warlord clad in spiked, obsidian-black plate armor, resting a eight-foot executioner’s broadsword over its shoulder.
