"Before we head out, though," John said, pausing as he looked over her oversized, light-blue patient scrubs, "you’re going to need something better to wear than hospital pajamas."
He walked over to a supply locker near the corner of the briefing room, retrieving a neatly folded bundle of civilian clothing and a pair of clean white shoes he had requisitioned from the base logistics depot. He set the garments onto the table.
"Take your time getting changed. I’ll be waiting right outside the door."
"Thank you, John," Elenore replied softly, dipping her head.
John stepped out into the hallway, leaning against the sterile white wall while the pneumatic door slid shut behind him.
A few minutes later, the door parted with a gentle hiss.
John turned his head—and momentarily lost his train of thought.
Elenore stepped into the corridor, looking remarkably stunning. She wore an ivory, cable-knit turtleneck sweater that draped comfortably over her slender frame, paired with slim-fitting dark denim jeans that accentuated her long, graceful legs. Around her neck rested a delicate crystalline pendant, and on her feet were sleek, low-heeled white shoes. Her flowing silver hair cascaded past her shoulders in luminous waves, framing her porcelain face and delicate, pointed ears.
She fidgeted slightly under his gaze, her cheeks dusting with a faint pink blush as she tugged at the soft wool sleeve of the sweater.
"Is this... suitable?" Elenore asked hesitantly, glancing down at the snug denim. "The fabric is unlike the silk or linen robes I vaguely recall, but... it is extraordinarily soft and warm."
"It suits you perfectly," John said with an appreciative nod, clearing his throat lightly as he pushed off the wall. "Much better for moving around. Let’s go."
John led her down through the hospital lobby and out to the vehicle pavilion, where an armored Command JLTV was idling, its heavy turbo-diesel engine humming steadily.
He opened the heavy passenger door for her, helping her step up into the high-clearance cab before climbing into the driver’s seat.
With a smooth shift into gear, the JLTV accelerated out onto the wide, multi-lane asphalt highway. Elenore stared out the tinted ballistic window in pure, quiet fascination as the military metropolis unfolded around them—passing towering communications arrays, rows of logistics warehouses, and armored patrols cruising the perimeter.
The vehicle wound its way up the mountain pass, approaching the sheer rock face of the island’s central peak.
"How does this move?"
Elenore asked, turning her head toward him. Her amethyst eyes flickered with genuine, childlike curiosity as she watched his hands on the thick, textured steering wheel and his boot lightly pressing the accelerator pedal. "There are no horses or mana-beasts harnessed to the front, yet I sense no magic pushing us forward."
John chuckled, keeping his eyes on the winding mountain road ahead.
"It’s called an internal combustion engine," John explained in simple terms. "Basically, it burns refined fossil fuel—what we call diesel—inside metal chambers. The tiny controlled explosions push pistons, the pistons turn a driveshaft, and that spins the wheels."
Elenore tilted her head, processing the alien concept. Her delicate silver eyebrows furrowed in fascination. "I see."
The JLTV crested the final curve of the mountain pass, approaching the sheer, vertical rock face of the island’s highest peak.
Cut directly into the granite mountain was a colossal, reinforced blast door forged from layered hardened steel, flanked by high-resolution surveillance cameras, thermal sensors, and automated remote weapon stations. As the JLTV approached, an automated laser scanner flashed over the vehicle.
HIIISSSSS—CLUNK!
Heavy hydraulic cylinders groaned, and the multi-ton blast doors smoothly parted down the center, opening into a brilliantly illuminated subterranean tunnel system.
Elenore gasped softly, her slender hands clutching the fabric of her denim jeans as the armored truck drove straight into the heart of the mountain. "You carved an entire fortress beneath the stone..."
"It’s our central Tactical Operations Center," John replied, steering the vehicle into a subterranean staging bay lined with rows of armored transports and logistics trucks. "The brain of the entire island."
He shifted into park, cut the engine, and stepped out, coming around to open the heavy door for Elenore. She stepped down gracefully onto the polished concrete floor, her low-heeled white shoes clicking softly as she looked around at the bustling crews of mechanics, logistics personnel, and armed sentries in crisp camouflage fatigues.
John escorted her through a pair of biometric security gates and into a high-speed elevator. With a smooth chime, the lift descended deep into the core of the mountain before the doors parted onto the primary command deck.
The Tactical Operations Center (TOC) opened up before them like a high-tech amphitheater.
Bathed in a cool, focused ambient blue light, dozens of operators wearing headsets sat in tiered rows of glowing multi-screen workstations, tracking radio telemetry, maritime sonar sweeps, and airborne radar vectors.
Dominating the massive front bulkhead was a colossal, wall-sized holographic projection display. It showed a high-resolution, three-dimensional topographical map of the entire region—featuring their island fortress, the surrounding azure sea, and the sweeping, distant coastlines of the uncharted mainland.
"Commander on deck!" the watch officer barked crisply.
"As you were," John called out, raising a hand.
He guided Elenore up to the elevated central briefing rail that overlooked the entire operations floor. The glowing holographic landmass shimmered in vivid green, blue, and gold right before her eyes.
"This is the lay of the land," John said, turning to look at her. "Our high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and early-warning radars mapped out the surrounding ocean and mainland over the past three days."
He pointed toward a massive, sweeping continent across the water, where dense emerald forests, jagged mountain ranges, and deep river valleys were rendered in razor-sharp detail.
"Take a look, Elenore. Does any of this landscape ring a bell?"
