Chapter 5: First Boss Fight

I Was Summoned as the Weakest Hero, But I Awakened a Military System

John marched into the far-right archway.. He kept his FN SCAR-H slung across his chest at a ready angle while balancing the heavy Barrett M107A1 in his right grip. The tunnel stretched wide and high, a cavernous stone corridor devoid of web structures or perches, a straight, clear fatal funnel leading directly into the guardian’s lair.

As he reached the end of the three-hundred-meter passage, the tunnel opened up into an immense, bowl-shaped subterranean arena. High above the chamber floor, a natural ledge of jagged granite jutted out from the wall—a perfect elevated sniper perch perched roughly eighty meters back from the sleeping beast.

John quietly scaled the rock wall, using the handholds carved by natural fissures until he hauled himself onto the flat ledge. He went flat on his stomach, resting the heavy bipod of the Barrett onto the cold stone edge.

Through his AN/PVS-31A night vision goggles, he framed the target in his optic.

The Iron-Hide Behemoth was a terrifying mass of biological armor. Resting in front of the glowing exit altar, it resembled a colossal, multi-limbed quadruped crossed with a rhinoceroid beetle. Its fourteen-ton body was covered in thick, overlapping plates of black bio-chitin that glinted like polished obsidian under the pale thermal light. Its massive, blunt head ended in a triple-pronged horn structure, while thick, pillar-like legs anchored its armored frame to the stone. Thick, green fumes snorted out from plate vents along its flank with every heavy breath.

Through the Leupold Mark 4 scope, John scanned the beast’s overlapping armor plates, looking for the fatal gap.

The main shell was nearly impervious to standard fire, but right beneath its neck armor, where the head joined the shoulders, a thick seam of exposed, pulsing red tissue flared bright on his thermal display.

John rested his cheek against the foam cheek riser, centered the crosshairs directly on the neck seam, and took a slow, deep breath.

"Target acquired," John whispered softly into his mic, his finger taking up the slack on the MatchGrade trigger. "Goodnight, big guy."

BOOM!

The Barrett M107A1 detonated with a thunderous roar that shattered the arena’s quiet. The heavy muzzle brake blasted a concussive shockwave of dust sideways across the ledge, the massive .50 BMG round exiting the barrel at nearly three thousand feet per second.

The MK 211 Mod 0 High Explosive Armor Piercing Incendiary round struck the neck seam dead center.

KABOOM!

A blinding flash erupted at the impact point as the tungsten penetrator punched through the red tissue, its zirconium charge exploding inside the joint with a spray of thermite fire and yellow blood.

The Iron-Hide Behemoth let out a gut-wrenching, ground-shaking roar that rattled loose gravel off the ceiling. But instead of collapsing, the fourteen-ton terror surged to its feet with unnatural speed.

SKRRRRRRT!

With a terrifying, wet screech of shifting bone, thick plates of bio-chitin slammed shut over the neck seam like a hydraulic steel door. The beast swept its massive head toward the ledge, its six glowing crimson eyes locking directly onto John’s position.

"What the fuck?!" John gritted his teeth, his eyes wide through the scope. The hit had dealt damage, but the monster’s sheer Level 45 bio-reaction had sealed its own structural weak point in less than a second.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

The Behemoth lowered its triple-pronged horn and charged, its pillar-like legs pounding the stone floor like diesel pistons. It didn’t try to climb the rock wall—it simply slammed its fourteen-ton frame straight into the base of John’s granite ledge at forty miles an hour.

CRASH!

A terrifying shockwave ripped through the rock. The entire granite ledge cracked under the sheer kinetic impact, fracturing into massive chunks of falling debris.

John was thrown off the collapsing ledge, tumbling through forty feet of open air into the arena below.

Air rushed past his ears as gravity yanked him toward the hard stone floor. His maxed-out CQC reflexes kicked in automatically—John tucked his chin, rotated mid-air, and absorbed the impact through a violent combat roll across the loose gravel, springing back up onto his feet instantly despite the sharp sting in his knees.

The Barrett M107A1 clattered against the stone floor meters away, its heavy steel receiver scratched from the drop.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

The Behemoth didn’t give him a second to breathe. Spinning its massive fourteen-ton frame around, its triple-pronged horn carved deep gouges in the rock floor as it lowered its snout, accelerating into a terrifying forty-mile-an-hour charge straight toward him.

"You want a heavy ordnance fight?!" John yelled, his voice echoing over the thunderous pounding of the beast’s hooves. "Let’s fucking go!"

He opened his interface with a razor-sharp thought.

"System! Deploy FGM-148 Javelin!"

FLASH!

The heavy matte-black Command Launch Unit (CLU) and its pre-loaded launch tube materialized directly in his grip. John dropped to one knee, hoisted the weapon onto his right shoulder, and flipped open the infrared display screen. He lined up the crosshairs squarely on the charging monster’s center mass.

BEEP... BEEP... BEEP-BEEP-BEEEEEEP!

The lock-on tone turned solid.

"Fire!"

FSHHHHH-BOOM!

The Javelin’s soft-launch motor ejected the missile, launching it twenty feet into the air before its primary solid-fuel rocket motor ignited with a deafening roar. The missile soared upward toward the cavern ceiling before pitching down at a steep eighty-degree angle, diving straight into a top-attack trajectory toward the beast’s back shell.

KABOOOOOM!

The tandem-charge HEAT warhead detonated on contact. The precursor charge blew away the top layer of black bio-chitin, allowing the main shaped-charge jet of molten copper to blast thousands of degrees of kinetic energy deep into the creature’s dorsal spine.

ROAAAAAR!

The Behemoth shrieked, its forward momentum violently halted as its front legs buckled, skidding across the stone floor and throwing up a massive cloud of dust and green blood.

John dumped the spent Javelin tube, unslung his FN SCAR-H, and flipped the selector switch straight to full-auto.

"System! Deploy M203 Grenade Launcher and 40mm HEDM rounds!"

FLASH!

An underbarrel M203 launcher materialized beneath the handguard of his SCAR-H, pre-loaded with an M433 High-Explosive Dual-Purpose round.

The Behemoth shook off the disorientation, its six crimson eyes burning with absolute rage as it raised its massive front limbs to smash John into paste.

John sprinted laterally, sliding behind a fallen granite boulder, and popped up over the cover.

THUMP!

The M203 fired with a distinct mechanical pop. The 40mm grenade slammed directly into the beast’s front left knee joint, exploding with a concentrated shaped-charge jet that shattered its bio-chitin plating and severed the thick tendons beneath.

The giant’s left leg collapsed, dropping the fourteen-ton nightmare onto its side with a hollow, earth-shaking thud.

John didn’t stop. He pressed his advantage, leaping over the boulder and advancing straight toward the downed monster. His hands moved on pure, instinctual muscle memory forged by his maxed-out skill tree.

CLACK-CLICK.

He broke open the M203 barrel, ejected the steaming brass hull, slapped a fresh 40mm round into the breech, and snapped it shut.

THUMP! KABOOM!

Another 40mm round struck the opposite leg joint, blowing away its right knee and leaving the behemoth completely immobilized on the stone floor. It thrashed helplessly, its triple-pronged horn sweeping back and forth as it spewed thick, acidic green fumes from its side vents.

"System! Deploy M240B Medium Machine Gun!"

FLASH!

A heavy, belt-fed M240B machine gun materialized in his hands, loaded with a 100-round cloth nutsack of 7.62x51mm M80A1 Enhanced Performance Rounds.

John kicked his bipod open onto a flat rock just fifteen meters from the beast’s thrashing head. He pressed the buttstock firmly into his shoulder, lined up the iron sights directly on the wounded, sizzling seam beneath its neck plate, and laid his finger flat on the trigger.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A continuous, deafening wall of sound detonated through the cavern. Tracers strobed through the dark as the M240B pumped eight hundred rounds per minute of hardened steel-penetrator rounds directly into the open neck seam. Chitin plates shattered, green blood sprayed in hot fountains, and flesh was pulverized under the relentless rate of fire.

The barrel grew hot, smoke billowing off the gas block as John walked his fire back and forth across the exposed throat, completely suppressing the beast’s ability to seal its armor.

CLICK.

The bolt locked back on an empty belt, the barrel smoking heavily in the damp air.

The Behemoth lay gasping, its massive head barely able to lift off the floor, its breathing reduced to a wet, dying rattle. But its six red eyes still glared at John with lingering, hateful life.

John unslung the M240B, letting it clatter to the ground. He reached into his system menu one final time, his expression cold and unyielding.

"Let’s finish this properly," John growled. "System, give me an AT4."

FLASH!

The smooth-bore, 84mm unguided anti-tank weapon materialized in his grip. John flipped up the front and rear pop-up sights, cocked the firing pin mechanism, and brought the lightweight launcher to his shoulder.

He stepped right up to the dying titan, pressing the rubber nose-cap of the AT4 launcher directly against the beast’s gaping, acidic mouth.

John squeezed the red firing button.

FSHHHHH-KABOOOOOM!

The 84mm High Explosive Anti-Tank round detonated instantly inside the creature’s skull cavity. Overpressure and three thousand degrees of molten explosive force expanded within its head, instantly vaporizing its brain stem and shattering its bio-chitin skull from the inside out.

A shower of black ash, green blood, and smoking bone fragments rained across the stone floor as the massive fourteen-ton frame went completely limp, collapsing onto the ground with a final, heavy thud.

Silence descended over the subterranean arena.
