One after another, several pop-ups appeared before Derrick’s face, but he moved it away for now. His eyelids were feeling like they were made of lead, and he could barely stay awake.
"I will go back to my room and sleep." Words were barely leaving his lips anymore, but Rebecca understood each one.
"Don’t move." She ordered with stern authority. Her tears were dry, and confusion no longer clouded her eyes. "Sleep here; the sofa is wide enough, and you are not in any shape to move."
"I will prepare some healing food; you can take a rest."
What else could Derrick do besides nod in the face of a stern mother who left little to no room for refusal?
His thought drifted towards his encounter with Kenny.
He did not care if he had solved this case with his own detective skill or because Kenny had just walked up and confessed it to his face. All that mattered was he finally knew who to be wary of.
An enemy he knew of was better than a hidden enemy.
But there are still many unanswered questions. Like, when was the first attempt on the old Derrick’s life? Why would someone from a reputable family like the West family try to kill me for a mere spot in a middle-level Guild’s training academy?
He had a feeling that something big was going on in the shadows, but he had no idea what.
It has nothing to do with me; I should forget about this... Even though he had thought that, Derrick did not realize that the gears of the world were turning to draw him into a shitload of troubles whether he liked it or not.
[Claim The Rewards?]
[Yes] [No]
That last window of the system appeared before his eyes, but Derrick was too sleepy to even read it properly.
The words blurred out of his vision as he gave in to the exhaustion that consumed him completely.
...
While Derrick was recovering from his injuries, on the other side of the federation, the atmosphere was gloomy.
Splatter!
Drops of rain were pouring down like someone had unloaded a machine gun.
If the area where Derrick lived was considered urban, this was rural. The houses were made of concrete; the windows were plain glass covered with cotton sheets. None of the buildings were taller than the fourth floor.
In some world, these houses might even be considered luxury houses, but here they were one punch away from being detoured by a weak, physically strengthened being.
The paints on the buildings were gloomy.
There was not a single resident on the dark streets of this area. But then, two figures, covered in trench coats and top hats that kept rain from touching them, entered the area.
Their faces were covered in the shadows of the darkness. They stepped into the streets and looked around before settling their eyes on the abandoned warehouse at the end of the street.
Splash!
The sounds of their footsteps in the puddle of rainwater echoed throughout the area. They only stopped once they were in front of the warehouse.
One of the tall men placed his hand on the wall where a red sigil was carved on the bricked wall.
It was in the shape of a sinister eye with half-closed eyes. Staring at it for a second, he said, "It seems we are in the right place."
The other man looked over his shoulder to glance. "Eye of Kubera. Since that nasty little thing is here, it means we are in the correct spot."
The first man nodded. "All the reports of the missing people’s case show that at one point or another, they all visited this area, and now it all makes sense. Come on William, let’s go inside."
Without waiting, the two removed their hats and walked inside only to see a horrifying scene waiting for them inside.
"God is dead." Following the trail of blood that had reached the edge of the huge warehouse, William saw piles of corpses lying around like they were some discarded shipments. Their stomachs were split open and organs were harvested.
Not even the eyes of the deceased remained.
"Even if there is a God, they are a sick individual who does not deem such acts as not worthy of punishment." William Hunt spat in disgust as he stared blankly at the corpse of a two-year-old boy who might have barely known how to run.
The boy was not alone; there were other corpses in the piles. There were kids younger than him and adults who were close to their middle age.
They all had missing organs, and the deeper they went inside, the more the pile grew.
"I already told you." The other man, James Clancy, stared ahead with his head raised and clicked his tongue in distaste while saying it. "The day that cataclysmic event happened, It was made clear there were no gods, at least not a good one."
"If there were any good gods—" William followed his line of sight while his voice drifted away in the man’s ears. There, from the ceiling, a man was hung upside down. There was a deep cut on his stomach reaching from his navel all the way to his chest.
The insides of his body were ripped apart, leaving a hollow shell of a dripping mess for them to find.
"They would have wiped out humanity all together." William finished the words for James.
