TRAINING: TREMORSENSE

Listened with his body.

The world unfolded beneath him in ripples.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip—water, forty-eight meters northeast.

A faint scratching—distant

A faint scratching—distant, rhythmic, organized.

Twenty meters below and northeast.

Multiple sources.

Moving in patterns.

The nest.

The fled Skitterers had returned home.

And their home was busy.

He mapped it through vibration alone: a larger chamber, perhaps fifteen meters across.

Dozens of small signatures moving in circular patterns—workers.

Three larger signatures, stationary—guardians or brood-mothers.

One massive signature at the center, barely moving.

Pulsing.

Something big lived down there.

TRAINING: SWARM COMMAND

Finally—the pheromones.

He worked his jaw, activating the chemical glands differently than venom.

A different secretion.

A different language.

He clicked.

Submit.

Report.

Gather.

The sound bounced off empty stone.

No audience.

But the glands responded—producing the chemical signal cleanly.

He could feel the pheromone cloud dissipating in the still air.

Functional.

Needs targets.

TRAINING COMPLETE

Skills Practiced:

Venom Spit — confirmed accuracy at short range Wall Cling — ~30 second ceiling adherence Tremorsense — mapped nest location below Swarm Command — pheromone production confirmed

Ruel rose.

His violet-cracked scales pulsed with quiet hunger.

Northeast.

Below.

The nest.

He moved.

Ruel crept silently toward the nest, testing the Swarm Command on a lone worker once he reached the threshold.

Ruel descended.

The tunnel system sloped downward in a gradual spiral—ancient, worn smooth by generations of chitinous legs.

The bioluminescent fungus grew thicker here, painting the walls in sickly green-blue light.

The air grew warmer.

Humid.

It tasted of pheromones—old ones, layered over months.

Territory markers.

Trail signs.

Warnings.

All in a language he now spoke.

He read them as he moved:

Worker path.

Food source—east.

Danger—above.

Brood—below.

Danger above.

That was new.

That was him.

Skill Used: Stealth Approach New chapters come out on g.com first.

Ruel attempted to move silently through Skitterer-marked tunnels toward the nest, using Tremorsense to avoid patrols.

Result: Failure.

Ruel moved with predatory intent—low to the ground, claws placed carefully, tail lifted to avoid scraping stone.

His Tremorsense fed him constant data: the nest’s vibrations growing stronger with each meter descended.

But the tunnels were designed for Skitterers.

A section of floor—seemingly solid—gave slightly beneath his weight.

Not a trap.

Worse.

A resonance plate—a natural formation the Skitterers had learned to use.

His step sent a specific vibration frequency rippling downward.

Intruder.

Heavy.

Path seven.

He felt the response immediately through Tremorsense.

Below—two worker-signatures broke from their circular pattern.

Moving upward.

Toward him.

Investigative, not aggressive.

Not yet.

Ruel pressed himself against the ceiling.

Wall Cling engaged.

His claws adhered.

He hung inverted in a shadowed pocket where the tunnel widened slightly—a natural alcove above the main path.

Thirty seconds.

That was his window.

The first worker appeared beneath him.

Smaller than the ones he’d fought—half the size, legs thinner, mandibles built for carrying rather than combat.

It moved in quick, nervous bursts.

Antennae twitching.

Reading the air.

Reading his pheromones.

It paused.

Confused.

The tunnel smelled like coordinator.

Like authority.

But wrong.

Layered over something alien.

The second worker appeared behind the first.

Same hesitation.

Same confusion.

They were alone.

Ruel’s pheromone glands pulsed.

He worked his jaw silently—producing the chemical command.

A single, precise emission:

Report.

Calm.

Return.

He layered it with the coordinator’s authority signal—the one he’d devoured and made his own.

Skill Used: Swarm Command (Single Target Domination)

Ruel attempted to use pheromone command on isolated worker to override its investigation instinct.

Result: Success.

The first worker stilled.

Its antennae drooped.

Legs relaxed from their nervous twitching into a passive, compliant stance.

The ANATHEMA instinct flickered behind its compound eyes—a momentary tension in its mandibles—then faded.

Overridden.

The coordinator’s pheromone signature was too strong.

Too direct.

It clicked once.

Soft.

Submissive.

Acknowledged. Visit g.com for the full chapter.

Calm.

Returning.

It turned—bumping gently into the second worker, transferring the pheromone signal through physical contact.

The second worker hesitated longer.

Its antennae swept the air twice.

Three times.

Then it, too, relaxed.

Both workers turned and descended back toward the nest.

Calm.

Unalarmed.

Reporting nothing.

Ruel released his grip on the ceiling and dropped silently to the tunnel floor.

His claws made no sound.

It worked.

The coordinator’s authority lived inside him now—not perfectly, not completely, but enough to fool workers.

Enough to pass as something that belonged.

He pressed forward.

The nest entrance loomed ahead—a widening in the tunnel where green-blue light intensified and the air thickened with layered pheromones.

Through Tremorsense, he felt it all: dozens of workers, three guardians, and that massive pulsing signature at the center.

Ruel scaled the ceiling silently, peering down into the abyss to map the room before choosing the target for his first real strike.

Ruel’s claws found the ceiling once more.

Wall Cling engaged—each pad adhering to damp stone as he pulled himself upward, inverting his body with practiced control.

His tail curled tight against his spine.

His breathing slowed.

The violet cracks between his scales dimmed—instinctively, as if his body understood that glowing was the enemy of stealth.

He crawled forward along the ceiling, inch by inch, toward the widening mouth of the nest chamber.

Skill Used: Ceiling Traverse + Stealth (Nest Observation)

Ruel clung to the ceiling, moved silently into the nest chamber’s upper reaches, and tried to observe without being detected.

Result: Failure.

Partial success: Entry achieved.

Detection timer initiated.

Ruel crossed the threshold.

The nest opened beneath him like a cathedral of chitin and silk.

The chamber was vast—larger than Tremorsense had suggested.

Roughly twenty meters across, with a domed ceiling rising perhaps eight meters at its apex.

Ruel clung near the edge where shadow still pooled, his dark scales blending against blackened stone.

But the ceiling here was different.

Coated in a thin layer of dried silk—old webbing repurposed as structural reinforcement.

His claws adhered, but the silk crackled faintly with each movement.

Micro-sounds.

Sounds that antennae could catch.

He stopped moving.

Observed.
