The moment the male said Odette had killed the baboon, the whole Thorn Hollow seemed to forget how to breathe.

The elders stared at her as if the blood on her skin had changed her into something they did not know how to name.

Females were supposed to survive by being guarded, chosen, hidden, and carried behind thorn walls when danger came.Full novel: In This Beast World Females Are Not Safe — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

A female was supposed to cry, wait, obey, and let males stand in front of her, because that was the order they had repeated for so long that even some females believed it.

But Odette had killed a male with her own hands, and in their world, that meant something frightening.

The oldest elder’s lips pulled back from his teeth as a low growl crawled out of his chest.

He was a grey-faced mandrill beastman with heavy arms, a broad nose, and old scars crossing his bare chest.

His hide skirt was stained with blood, and his eyes were sharp with anger because he understood what the others were only beginning to understand.

A female who killed was not only dangerous because she had spilled blood.

She was dangerous because she had proved she did not need to be fully controlled.

“Red-clawed,” he said.

The word spread through the hollow like bad scent.

Some females gasped and pulled their children closer.

Some males snarled, their shoulders rising and their fingers curling as if Odette had bitten them instead of the baboon.

Even the wounded males lying against the roots lifted their heads, because red-clawed was not a name given to ordinary females.

It meant a female who had killed a male, and no elder wanted that kind of story growing inside a Thorn Hollow.

Odette slowly pushed herself up even though her ribs hurt so badly that her breath shook.

Mud, blood, and crushed leaves clung to her skin, and her silver-white hair hung in dirty strands around her face.

Her amber eyes were bright with pain and rage as she looked at the elders one by one.

“You call me red-clawed because I lived?” she asked, her voice rough from vomiting and fear.

“You would rather call me wrong than admit your walls failed.”

A leopard male near the elders snarled, his tail lashing behind him.

“You should have stayed inside the hollow like the other females.”

Odette laughed once, but there was no joy in it.

The sound was sharp and ugly because she was too tired to hide her disgust.

“Inside?

Look around you.

Your safe hollow is full of dead males who claimed they could protect us, and dead females who believed them.”

The males stiffened, and the air filled with growls.

An okapi beastman stamped one hoofed foot hard against the mud, while a scarred honey badger male bared his teeth and made a deep rattling sound in his throat.

They hated her words because they could not say she was lying.

Broken roots, torn thorn walls, blood pools, crushed bodies, and crying females were all around them.

Odette turned her head and spat at their feet.

The hollow went still again, but this silence was hotter than the last one.

“You feed us,” Odette said, her fingers digging into the mud as she forced herself to stand straighter.

“You guard us.

You hide us.

Then you say we should be grateful when you choose who touches us and who fills our bellies with young we never asked for.

Do you think we do not know what you are doing?

You keep females here for mating and birthing, not because you think we are alive the same way you are.”

A few females lowered their eyes, and that made Odette even angrier because she knew they understood her.

They understood but they were scared, and fear had made them quiet for so long that silence had started looking like obedience.

The mandrill elder roared, and the sound shook loose dirt from the roots above.

“Rebellious female!”

Before Odette could step back, a huge pangolin beastman crossed the space between them and grabbed her by the neck.

His claws were thick and curved, his arms covered in dark scales that scraped against her skin, and when he lifted her, her feet left the ground.

Odette choked and clawed at his wrist, kicking hard even though her injured knee made pain flash up her leg.

“You useless female,” he snarled into her face, his breath hot and sour.

“You think killing one wounded baboon makes you a male?”

Odette could not answer because his grip was crushing her throat.

Her face burned, her eyes watered, and black spots moved across her sight, but she still glared at him because only his strength stopped her.

If she had been stronger, she would have opened his chest and ripped out whatever ugly thing he called a heart.

“Put her down!” a female voice cried.

Everyone turned.

A wounded female with blood on her shoulder struggled to stand with another female holding her up.

Her face was pale, but her eyes were clear.

“We lost too many females tonight.

We cannot lose another one because your pride is wounded.”

The pangolin male’s jaw tightened, but the elders growled in agreement because even angry males knew numbers mattered.

Females were fewer than males.

Females gave birth to mostly males, so every living female was important to the hollow, even one they hated.

He threw Odette aside.

She hit the ground hard on her hip and shoulder, and blood filled her mouth as her teeth cut the inside of her cheek.

She spat it out and glared at him from the mud.

The mandrill elder stepped closer.

“Would you rather be cast out of Thorn Hollow, red-clawed?

Outside these roots, even males are eaten.

Giant centipedes split bodies in the wet caves.

River crocodiles drag hunters under.

Tree iguanas poison with one bite.

Swamp octopus beasts pull males into black water, and elephant bulls crush dens when they rage.

You think a lone female can live there?”

Odette lifted her blood-stained face.

“Gladly.”

The answer was so calm that even the females looked frightened for her.

The elders stared at her, and that was when they finally saw it.

Odette was not begging.

She was not pretending.

She truly wanted the outside more than their protection, even after everything she had seen.

The elder’s nostrils flared.

“Take her to the root-lock cave.

Let her remember hunger before she speaks again.”

Two males grabbed her at once.

Odette fought, cursed them as rotten-toothed carrion beasts and hollow-born cowards, but her body was too weak.

They dragged her through mud and blood while the hollow slowly returned to its work, pulling bodies away, pressing leaves into wounds, and washing blood from crying females.

They locked her inside a small cave sealed with twisted roots and thornwood.

When the darkness swallowed her, Odette crawled to the cold wall and finally shook so hard her teeth clicked together.

Rage filled her chest until it hurt worse than her ribs, because she had run, fought, killed, and still ended up trapped.

She did not know when she passed out.

She only knew that later, through the dark, a soft female voice called her name gently.

“Odette.”
