The smoke burned my throat with every breath.
I pulled Seraphina back from the window.
Isolde climbed back inside without being told, coughing hard into her sleeve.
Kaelen kicked Valerius’s greatsword farther down the landing and staggered over to us.
Blood ran freely down his arm and onto the stone.
He did not wipe it away.
The landing was filling with thick, oily black smoke.
The purple haze mixed with it and made every breath burn.
Isolde pressed her sleeve harder over her mouth and nose.
Her shoulders shook with each cough she tried to hold back.
Seraphina’s chest rose and fell in short, shallow pulls.
The smoke was already stinging her eyes and making them water.
She did not look away from me.
Kaelen looked at the burning stairs, then at the sealed window, then at me. His face stayed hard. There was no trust in it. Only the same cold calculation he had shown since he first walked through the broken door of the upstairs room.
"We are trapped," he said.
I stood between them and the stairs.
The heat was rising fast.
Below us the main hall roared as the fire found more dry wood and old oil.
The knights had set the keep on fire to smoke us out or burn us alive.
Either way, the landing would not stay breathable much longer.
My own lungs already felt tight.
The cut across my ribs burned with every breath.
Kaelen still held his saber. Blood from his shoulder dripped steadily onto the stone near his boot. He did not look at me with anything like alliance. He only looked at the princess and the rising flames, measuring time the same way I was.
We had seconds before the smoke made it impossible to think clearly.
I opened the System Store with the points I had left. There was only one useful item left that could get us out of a sealed stone room. I bought a Kinetic Breach Charge for four hundred System Points.
A heavy iron disk the size of a dinner plate appeared in my hand.
One side was smooth.
The other had a simple twist lock in the center.
The description was short and clear: press it flat against a wall or barrier, twist the lock to arm it, then get clear.
It would punch a hole straight through solid stone with a focused blast.
Not subtle.
Not quiet.
But strong enough to break us out of this landing before the smoke killed us.
"Kaelen, grab the Princess. Isolde, cover your ears and get down."
Isolde dropped to her knees. Kaelen scooped Seraphina up without argument. I pressed the charge flat against the eastern wall, twisted the center lock until it clicked, and threw myself back over Isolde.
The explosion was loud and sharp. A hard, focused blast of force punched outward. Stone blew apart in a cloud of dust and broken chunks. Clean, freezing rain air rushed in through the new hole.
"Move!"
I lifted Isolde over my shoulder. Kaelen followed with Seraphina. We slid down the wet roof of the ruined barracks and dropped into the mud outside. Behind us the second floor caught fire and roared.
Rain hammered us at once. My fractured rib burned with every step. Isolde shivered hard against me. Seraphina stayed silent in Kaelen’s arms.
We pushed through the broken fence and into the dark trees of the Veiled Reaches.
The ground was slick with mud and wet leaves.
Every step pulled at the cut on my ribs.
Blood soaked the side of my coat and ran cold under the rain.
Kaelen kept pace without speaking. His shoulder wound still bled, but he did not slow. Isolde’s fingers dug into my coat. She could not see the path. She only held on and trusted the direction of my steps.
We walked for a long time through mud and underbrush.
The fire behind us lit the low clouds orange for a while, then faded as the rain and distance took it.
The only sounds left were the rain, our breathing, and the wet crunch of boots on the forest floor.
My rib pulled with every step.
Isolde’s weight on my shoulder made it worse, but I did not put her down.
Kaelen stayed a few paces ahead, checking the ground and the trees.
He did not speak.
The blood from his shoulder had soaked a dark patch down the back of his cloak, but he kept moving.
I found the old smuggler cave I remembered from the original novel’s lore. A narrow fissure hidden by thick vines and a fallen tree. The opening was low and dark. I had to duck to get inside with Isolde still over my shoulder.
Inside it was dry and cold. I set Isolde down against the wall. Kaelen laid Seraphina beside her and wrapped his own cloak around the princess. The thick wool was already soaked, but it was better than nothing.
For the first time since the fighting started, no one was trying to kill us.
I sat down hard, breathing through the pain in my ribs. The cave smelled of damp earth and old ash. Rain drummed outside against the vines. Water dripped from the edge of the opening in a steady line.
Isolde pulled her knees up, still shivering.
Her blind violet eyes stared at nothing.
Seraphina’s golden eyes watched me in the dark.
The hostility she had carried since the carriage was gone.
She had seen me take a bolt for Isolde and fight Valerius to the end.
Something had shifted.
"We can’t go back," Isolde said quietly. "My uncle sent men to kill me. Your father signed your death. We are dead to the kingdom."
I pulled the blood-stained letter from Valerius out of my pocket and dropped it on the dirt between us.
"House Voss and House Draven are closed," I said. "Any town we walk into will sell us for the bounty."
Seraphina’s voice was rough. "Prince Alaric never planned to save Aldemoor. He only wanted my name and my corpse as a banner. You were right, Cassian. No one is coming."
Kaelen knelt beside her. "My blade is yours, Princess. And I will follow the Voss bastard’s lead for now. He kept you both alive when everyone else tried to butcher you."
I did not answer. I still had a few System Points left. I bought two Smokeless Heat Stones and struck them together. Warmth spread through the small cave without smoke or light.
I placed the stones between Isolde and Seraphina.
"Move closer," I told Isolde. I guided her cold hands toward the heat.
She gasped softly when the warmth hit her skin. Her fingers brushed my scarred hand and stayed there for a second longer than needed.
"You could have traded me to the cleric," Isolde whispered. "Or given the Princess to Valerius. Why didn’t you?"
"I don’t take leashes," I said. "And I don’t sell the people standing next to me."
A quiet System window flickered.
[Action Logged: Environmental Care - Shelter and heat provided.]
[Grade: C]
[Reward: Purifying Water Flask & 100 System Points.]
I handed the flask to Kaelen. He gave Seraphina the first drink, then drank himself, then passed it to Isolde. The water was clean and cold. It helped more than it should have.
The quiet held.
Outside the rain kept falling.
Inside the cave the only light came from the faint glow of the heat stones.
My rib still hurt.
The cuts on my collarbone and ribs still bled slowly into the cloth I had pressed against them.
Kaelen’s shoulder needed real work, but none of us had the strength or the tools for it yet.
Kaelen moved to the cave mouth to keep watch, giving us the space.
I leaned my head back against the cold rock and closed my eyes for a moment.
The sound of the rain and the slow drip from the vines became a kind of background noise.
We had escaped the keep. We were alive. But we were also injured, cold, and hunted. The night was only beginning.
