He was drying the last bowl when his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
Banking notification.
He frowned.
Another one.
Then three more in quick succession.
He put the bowl down and opened the app.
The number on the screen was not the number that had been there this morning.

=====
Kai stood in the kitchen and looked at the number.
Two hundred and twenty-eight million coins.
He put the phone face down.
He picked it up.
Same number.
He closed the app.
He opened it.
Same number.
He put the phone on the counter and pressed both palms flat on the surface and stared at the wall.
Two hundred and twenty-eight million coins.
From standing in a doorway.
From saying she’s my wife and meaning it.
He thought about Mira’s whiteboard.
Why.
He thought about the way she’d held that question up — careful, slower than usual — like she’d been carrying it for a while before she wrote it.
He thought about Shira watching from the hallway with that new expression on her face. The direct one.
’You were both there,’ he thought. ’You both watched.’
He stood at the counter for a long time.
Then he opened his notebook to a new page.
He started writing.
Tomorrow — clinic. Both of them. Whatever the doctors find, we handle it.
Next week — Shira’s restaurant. Rooftop. Two districts over.
After that — Mira picks.
He underlined all three.
Then he added a fourth line.
Stop letting the Foundation think they still have a claim on anything here.
He underlined that one twice.
That evening after dinner Kai went to Shira’s door.
He knocked.
"Come in," Shira said.
She was in bed. The new brace was on the nightstand. She had taken it off herself — he could tell from the angle — which meant the spectral arm practice was progressing even if she hadn’t said so.
She looked at him when he entered. The direct expression again.
"The Foundation," she said. "Are they going to try again?"
"Probably," Kai said. "It won’t matter."
"How," she said.
"The civil affairs arrangement is binding," Kai said. "They can’t relocate her without my consent and mine isn’t available. Their leverage is social. It’s not legal."
Shira looked at the ceiling.
"My family’s representative visited when I was still in the hospital," she said. Quietly. Like she was telling something to the ceiling rather than to him. "Before the arrangement. They told the hospital staff I was no longer a family dependent. They updated the insurance. They left."
She said this the way someone describes weather. Flat. Already processed into something she’d made herself stop feeling.
"I know," Kai said.
Shira looked at him.
"You read the discharge papers," she said.
"On the cab ride," Kai said.
Shira was quiet.
"The insurance update cut my treatment coverage by sixty percent," she said. "The hospital adjusted my care level accordingly. I was in standard ward for the last two months. Before that I was in specialist recovery." She paused. "The difference is significant."
Kai said nothing.
He sat down in the chair by her bed.
He looked at the floor.
He felt something in his chest that was not sadness exactly — something harder than sadness, something with more weight to it, something that had a direction.
"That won’t happen again," Kai said.
Shira looked at him for a moment.
"You can’t promise that," she said.
"I know," Kai said. "I’m promising it anyway."
Another silence.
Shira looked at the ceiling again.
After a while she said, very quietly: "The brace fits better."
"Good," Kai said.
"You sized it from the discharge papers," she said.
"Yes," Kai said.
She didn’t say thank you.
But she closed her eyes and her breathing evened out and she was asleep within ten minutes.
Kai sat in the chair a little longer.
Then he stood, moved the chair back, and went to Mira’s door.
========
Three knocks.
A long pause.
Then one knock back.
"I’m not going to come in," Kai said through the door. "I just wanted to say — if you hear anything from the Foundation directly, calls or messages or anything — ignore it. Don’t engage. Everything goes through me."
Silence.
Then the sound of her marker.
Then the door opened just enough for a whiteboard to appear in the gap.
It said: Okay.
Just that.
The door closed again.
Kai stood in the hallway.
Okay.
He went back to the couch.
He pressed his palm to the cushion and felt both rhythms , Shira sleeping, Mira awake but still, neither of them alone in the dark tonight in quite the same way they’d been alone before.
He looked at the ceiling.
’228 million coins,’ he thought.
Then he thought about something else.
He thought about Yuso’s face when Kai said don’t to the lean man and the lean man stopped.
He thought about Shira watching from the hallway.
He thought about Mira’s whiteboard asking why and his answer and the way she’d held the board afterward without writing anything.
He thought: This is what the system means by investment. Not the coins. The actual thing.
He closed his eyes.
Tomorrow was Friday.
Rehabilitation clinic. Both of them. First proper assessment since discharge.
He was already awake before the alarm the next morning.
He always was.
