Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate

Kai was at the table going over some notes. He looked up.

Mira turned her head toward the sound of his pen.

She held up her whiteboard.

The audio reader has a setting that slows playback without changing pitch. I’ve been using it for pronunciation.

Kai looked at that line.

"Pronunciation," he said carefully.

I’m not going to say anything, she wrote. I’m just practicing the shapes.

She lowered the board.

She went back to her room and closed the door.

Kai sat at the table for a long moment.

’She is practicing talking,’ he thought. ’Alone in her room. With a device that can’t hear her. Practicing the shapes of words with vocal cords that work at fourteen percent.’

He pressed his palm to the table.

He felt her rhythm through the floor. In her room. Still. Focused.

He went back to his notes.

He didn’t write anything about it.

Some things were hers to keep until she was ready.

====

Lunch.

He made the specialty ingredients again — this time Mira’s optical blend. He kept Shira’s separate as always.

They ate together.

Halfway through the meal Shira put her spoon down and looked at Mira’s bowl and then at Kai.

"The two bowls," Shira said. "They smell different."

"Different ingredients," Kai said. "Different recovery protocols. Yours is the spinal nerve blend. Mira’s is the optical pathway blend. They conflict if combined so they’re rotated separately."

Shira looked at her bowl.

"You researched this," she said.

"The woman at the market helped," Kai said. "Two hours. She wrote out the rotation schedule."

A pause.

"How much," Shira said.

"Enough," Kai said.

Shira gave him the look she gave him every time he said enough instead of a number.

He gave her the expression he gave her every time she gave him that look.

Mira’s hand had stopped moving over her bowl. She was listening.

She wrote something without looking up and slid the board toward Kai’s direction.

You always say enough.

"Yes," Kai said.

Does that mean it was a lot.

"It means it was the right amount," Kai said.

Mira held the board for a moment.

Then she wrote: That is not an answer.

"I know," Kai said.

She made a sound.

Not a word. Not a hum. Just a short exhale through her nose that had a shape to it. An amused shape.

Shira looked at Mira.

The corner of Shira’s mouth moved.

Kai looked at his bowl.

He was extremely pleased with himself and he showed none of it.

====

After lunch he did the dishes.

Shira went to her room for the afternoon rest period that had become part of their rhythm — not sleeping exactly, more the quiet hour where the day processed itself.

Mira went to hers.

Kai finished the dishes and sat on the couch with his notebook.

He wrote numbers. Clinic costs projected for twelve weeks. Specialty ingredient rotation schedule versus remaining balance. Delivery costs for the next round of ingredients.

228 million coins in the account.

He still hadn’t spent any of it except the ongoing household costs.

He thought about what the epub had shown him. The Food Smith arc. The way Dexter had invested in better and better ingredients and the system had returned better and better rewards.

He wrote: Better ingredients. Not just recovery compounds. Proper food.

He looked at that.

Then he wrote: Market run — tomorrow.

He underlined it.

He put the notebook down and pressed his palm to the cushion.

Shira — in her room. The deliberate rhythm. She was doing it again. The physio exercises. He could tell from the particular pattern — a held pause, then a small movement, then another held pause. The grip resistance cycle.

Then something else.

Something he hadn’t felt before.

A different quality to the movement. Smaller. More focused. Not the grip resistance. Something finer than that.

He frowned.

’What are you doing,’ he thought.

He focused his Nerve Sense more precisely and felt —

A hand. The right hand. Lying flat on the mattress. And one finger.

One finger pressing down. Lifting. Pressing down. Lifting.

Barely. Less than a centimeter each time. The nerve signal arriving late and incomplete but arriving.

Kai sat very still on the couch.

The movement was tiny. Almost nothing. It would mean nothing to a doctor who wasn’t looking for it. It wouldn’t show on a standard assessment.

But it was there.

Shira was lying in her room in the middle of the afternoon pressing one finger down against her mattress and lifting it again. Alone. Without telling anyone. Without asking anyone to watch.

Just doing it. Over and over. The way you do something when you are terrified it will stop working if you look away.

Kai pressed his palm harder to the cushion.

’I feel it,’ he thought. Not at the system. Just at the wall. ’I feel it. Keep going.’

==========

He was still on the couch when the system chimed.

Not a financial notification. Something different.

『 BREAKTHROUGH REGISTERED. 』

『 SHIRA VOSS — MINOR PHYSICAL BREAKTHROUGH: 』 『 Right index finger — voluntary movement confirmed. 』 『 Duration: 23 minutes of sustained attempted activation. 』 『 Movement achieved: 47 instances. Partial signal, low amplitude. Improving. 』 『 Nerve pathway status: trace reopening detected in the L4-S1 corridor. Previously 0% signal. Now 2.1% signal. 』 『 This is not clinically significant. It will not appear on a standard scan. 』 『 The system registers it anyway. Because 2.1% was 0% this morning. 』

『 INVESTMENT RETURN — TRIGGERED. 』

『 FINANCIAL RETURN — SHIRA VOSS BREAKTHROUGH: 』 『 Specialty ingredients Day 3 (Shira rotation): 290 coins → 145,000 coins returned. 』 『 Physio session facilitation (this morning): 0 coins → non-material return. 』 『 Physio sheet review — Host did not push. Allowed target to set pace: Sincerity rating VERY HIGH. 』 『 Transport — accessible cab (Day 2 of 2): 210 coins → 105,000 coins returned. 』

『 NON-MATERIAL RETURN — GALE STRIKE ECHO LEVEL 2 ADVANCEMENT: 』 『 Wind pressure generation from Host fists: increased. Range extended to 6 meters. Precision improved. 』 『 Additional return: Nerve Sense upgrade — can now detect nerve signal quality in targets, not just rhythm. Host can now feel when Shira’s nerve pathways activate. 』

『 COMBINED FINANCIAL RETURN THIS TRIGGER: 』 『 500 coins invested → 250,000 coins returned. 』 『 Previous account balance: 227,587,847 coins. 』 『 Current account balance: 227,837,847 coins. 』

『 The system notes: this is a small return compared to previous ones. 』 『 The system also notes: this is the most important breakthrough logged so far. 』 『 A finger moved today that has not moved in seven months. 』 『 That is not a financial event. 』 『 That is everything. 』

Kai read it.

He read the last three lines twice.

He put the phone down.

He put both palms flat on the cushion and felt her through the wall — still going. Still pressing the finger down and lifting it. The nerve signal still faint and late and partial and absolutely real.

Something swelled in his chest that didn’t have a name and didn’t need one.
