Chapter 4 | Thanks For Taking Care Of Shira

Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate

Kai looked at her then. At the rigid set of her jaw and the hands that had stopped gripping the blanket but still hadn’t let go of it entirely, and the way she stared at the ceiling like she was in a staring contest with her own circumstances.

"That sounds like an exhausting thing to live with," Kai said. "Not knowing which nights will be bad. Not being able to prepare for it."

Shira was quiet for a moment.

"It is," she said. Very quietly. Like the words surprised her slightly on the way out.

Kai nodded once and looked back at the floor.

They sat in silence after that — but it was a different silence from every silence before it that night. Not the silence of two strangers with nothing to say. The kind that exists between people who have said the one true thing and don’t need to fill the space around it.

After about twenty minutes her breathing had evened out and her hands had finally loosened on the blanket.

"It’s passing," Shira said.

"Good," Kai said.

He stood. He moved the chair back to the corner. He left the medical bag on the nightstand instead of the floor so she could reach it without asking next time.

At the door he stopped.

He turned back.

"Shira," Kai said.

She looked at him. Not the sharp edge-of-a-blade look from this morning. Something more uncertain than that. Like she was still trying to locate the angle — the place where his helpfulness revealed itself as something else.

"You don’t have to manage these nights alone anymore," Kai said. "That’s all I wanted to say."

He didn’t wait for a response. He pulled the door shut behind him.

But in the hallway, through the closed door, he heard it.

Not words. Just a breath — long and slow, released from somewhere deep. The sound of someone who had been holding themselves together very tightly for a very long time, and had for just one moment, in the dark, let something go.

Kai stood still in the hallway.

Something ached quietly in his chest.

’She’s been doing this alone for six months,’ he thought. ’Every few nights. Alone in the dark, riding it out, not saying anything to anyone because there was no one to say it to.’

He stood there a moment longer than he needed to.

Then he went back to the couch and lay down.

He stared at the ceiling.

The system notification appeared without the chime this time. Quieter. Like it understood the mood.

『 Investment logged. 』

『 ▸ Physical: pain episode response, medication administration. 』

『 ▸ Emotional: genuine presence, 22 minutes. No performance. No expectation of gratitude. 』

『 Bond Level update — Shira Voss: 0.6 / 10. 』

『 Analyst note: She told you about the pain cycles. She has not told her family. She has not told her doctors beyond what the medical forms required. 』

『 She told you. 』

『 Do not underestimate what that cost her, Host. 』

Kai read that last line twice.

’I know,’ he thought quietly.

He closed his eyes.

He was almost asleep when it happened.

Not a chime this time. Something physical.

It started in his fingertips — a faint warmth, like circulation returning to a hand that had been cold too long. Then it moved up his arms and settled into his shoulders and the base of his neck and spread outward through his entire nervous system like something had been switched on inside him that had always been there, just dormant.

He opened his eyes.

The room looked the same.

But it felt completely different.

He could feel the couch spring in precise detail — not just its pressure but its exact position, the specific angle it was pushing at, the weight distribution across the cushion. He could feel the texture of his jacket against his arms with a clarity that hadn’t been there before, every thread of the fabric registering separately.

He sat up slowly.

He pressed his palm flat against the floor.

And felt — through the cheap apartment flooring, through the concrete beneath it — the faint rhythmic vibration of Shira’s breathing. Slow and even now. She was asleep.

He turned his hand. Pressed it against the wall beside the couch.

Through the wall. Down the hallway. He felt it — the lighter, slightly faster rhythm coming from Mira’s room. Still awake. Sitting still, but awake.

Kai stared at his hand.

’What is this,’ he thought.

『 First return. 』

『 Investment in Shira Voss — pain episode care — has triggered an initial Gift-adjacent return. 』

『 ABILITY UNLOCKED: NERVE SENSE 』

『 Your nervous system has been partially attuned to Shira Voss’s Gift frequency. Gale Strike generates force through precise nerve channel activation. Her pathways are damaged — but the blueprint of how they once functioned has transferred to you as a return. 』 『 Current level: Passive. You can detect vibrations, pressure changes, and minute physical signals through any surface you make contact with. Range: limited. Sensitivity: growing. 』 『 As Shira heals and her own nerve pathways recover, this ability will grow with her. 』 『 What was broken in her has become the beginning of something in you. 』

Kai read through it twice.

He pressed his palm to the floor again.

Shira’s breathing. Slow. Steady. Resting.

He pressed his other hand to the wall.

Mira. Awake. Sitting still on the edge of her bed.

He could feel both of them without moving, without seeing, without sound.

’This came from sitting with her,’ Kai thought. ’From just — being there while she hurt.’

『 Correct. The return reflects the nature of the investment. You helped her through nerve pain. Your nerves learned something from hers. 』

『 This is how the system works, Host. Every return is personal. Every ability is earned. Nothing here is generic. 』

Kai sat on the couch with both palms on the floor and felt the two quiet rhythms of his wives existing on the other side of thin walls.

Both of them awake in the dark.

Both of them alone in it in their own way.

Something settled firmly in his chest — not sadness exactly. Something more like purpose. The kind that doesn’t announce itself. It just arrives and stays.

’I’m going to fix this,’ he thought. Not as a declaration. Just as a fact. The way you decide something when it stops being a choice and becomes simply what you are going to do.

He lay back down.

He kept one hand on the floor.

He could feel Shira’s breathing even out further into deep sleep.

He stayed awake a little longer, just feeling it, making sure.

Then he closed his eyes.

He woke at five forty to pale grey morning light.

The first thing he did before he was even fully awake was press his palm to the floor.

Shira. Still sleeping. Breathing deep and even.

Mira. Awake. Had been for a while. The rhythm coming through the wall from her room was too still for someone who had just woken up — the stillness of hours, not minutes.

Kai sat up.

Through the gap in Mira’s door , she’d opened it herself at some point in the night, cracked it thirty centimeters so the hallway light could help her navigate , he could see her.

Sitting on the edge of her bed. Hands folded in her lap. Whiteboard against her knee. Eyes open and aimed at the middle distance.

Just existing in the quiet.

The way people do when they’ve learned that some nights simply don’t give you sleep no matter how much you need it.

Kai looked at her and felt it again — that same ache from Shira’s room, settling back into his chest with her name on it this time.

’Both of them,’ he thought. ’Both of them sitting alone in the dark, not saying anything, not asking for anything.’

He stood up quietly and went to the kitchen and put the kettle on.

When it was ready he poured two cups and walked down the hallway and knocked on Mira’s door frame. Three knocks, low and even. His knock. So she’d know.

She turned toward the sound.

"Tea," Kai said. "Setting it inside your door on the left. Thirty centimeters in from the frame."

He placed it carefully and straightened up.

Mira reached for her marker. She wrote something and held the board up toward his voice.

You didn’t sleep much

"Neither did you," Kai said.

She erased. She wrote: I heard you go to Shira’s room.

"She had a pain episode," Kai said. "She’s okay now. Sleeping."

Mira stayed still for a moment. Then she wrote something and held it up.

Does she know you stayed with her.

"She was awake the whole time," Kai said. "So yes."

Mira lowered the board slowly. She reached down and found the teacup by touch and wrapped both hands around it. The steam curled up between her fingers.

She wrote one more thing. Held it up without turning toward him.

Thank you for taking care of her.

Kai felt something shift in his chest at that. Something warm that didn’t have a clean name yet.

"She’s my wife," Kai said. "So are you. That’s what I’m here for. Both of you."

Mira sat with the board in her lap without writing for a long moment.

Then she brought the tea to her lips and drank.

Kai went back to the kitchen and stood at the counter and watched the morning come in through the small window above the sink. Grey light shifting slowly toward gold.

He pressed one hand flat against the kitchen counter.

Through the floor, through the walls — two rhythms. Shira’s deep and sleeping. Mira’s quiet and awake, the teacup warming her hands.

Both of them here.

Both of them still in one piece.

’One day at a time,’ Kai thought. ’That’s all it takes. One day, then another.’

He took his hand off the counter and started on breakfast.

『 Morning investment logged. 』 『 ▸ Emotional: pre-dawn presence. Genuine care expressed to both wives. 』 『 ▸ Material: tea, self-funded. 』

『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 0.6 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 0.7 / 10. 』

『 Nerve Sense — passive activation confirmed. Host is now tracking both wives through environmental contact without conscious effort. 』 『 The ability is already becoming natural to you. 』 『 Good. 』

『 Analyst note: Mira Elys heard your voice through the wall last night. Not the words. The tone. She spent three hours in the dark deciding what kind of person speaks to someone in pain at 2 a.m. the way you did. 』 『 She has not finished deciding. But she is closer. 』 『 Keep going, Host. 』
