Chapter 9 | Rebate

Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate

Kai read it.

He read it again.

He looked at Mira ,at the set of her jaw, the careful deliberate way she was holding the board, the particular stillness of someone who had made a decision they weren’t going to be talked out of.

Something moved in his chest that didn’t have a clean name yet.

"One month," Kai said. "We use one month of it as a bridge while I build the delivery income up. After that we reassess together. Deal?"

Mira held the board for another second.

Then she erased it and wrote one word.

Deal.

She picked up her spoon and went back to eating like the conversation was closed.

From the living room, through the wall, Kai felt the slight shift of Shira’s wheelchair , she’d moved closer to the doorway.

She’d heard all of it.

He didn’t address that either.

He finished his lunch.

That evening after both wives were settled Kai sat on the couch with his phone and his notebook and did the real math. Delivery income plus Mira’s bridge money minus fixed costs. Medication. Food. Clinic visits they still needed to book. The better rehabilitation center he’d identified that cost more but offered actual recovery pathways, not just management.

He wrote numbers. He crossed them out. He wrote them again.

It was workable. Barely. But barely was more than nothing.

He put the notebook down and pressed his palm to the couch.

Shira. In bed. Not asleep yet , her rhythm had that particular quality of someone lying awake with their eyes open.

Mira. Sitting on the edge of her bed. Still. But a different still from her usual — lighter somehow. Less weight in it.

He sat with both of them through the wall for a while.

Then the system chimed softly.

『 Host. 』

’What,’ Kai thought.

『 You have been operating without full system information. This was intentional. The W.I.A. does not reveal financial return mechanics until the Host has demonstrated genuine material investment without expectation of return. 』

『 Today you spent your last viable funds on your wives without hesitation. You accepted degrading work without complaint. You were honest with Mira about the situation when it would have been easier to deflect. 』

『 You have met the threshold. 』

Then new text appeared. Larger than usual.

『 FINANCIAL REBATE PROTOCOL — UNLOCKED. 』

Kai sat up straighter.

『 Every material investment made sincerely for a wife’s benefit is logged and queued within the W.I.A. Upon each wife’s breakthrough — physical, emotional, or Gift-related — all queued material investments return to the Host at a multiplied rate. 』

『 Current multiplier: ×500. 』

Kai stared at that number.

’Say that again,’ he thought.

『 Five hundred times the value of every sincere material investment. Queued and waiting for wife breakthroughs to release them. 』

『 Current queued returns: 』

『 ▸ Shira Voss — medication costs, food allocation, transport, miscellaneous care items. Pending: next physical breakthrough. 』

『 ▸ Mira Elys — food allocation, tea, transport, miscellaneous care items. Pending: next emotional or physical breakthrough. 』

Kai put his notebook down.

He picked up his phone. He opened the notes app. He did the math on what he’d spent in three days , every coin and multiplied it by five hundred.

He put the phone face-down on the couch.

He picked it up again.

The number was the same.

’The mandarins,’ Kai thought.

『 Yes. 』

’Three mandarins,’ Kai thought. ’Forty-two coins each.’

『 Correct. Those are also queued. 』

Kai stared at the ceiling.

’I’m going to be rich from fruit,’ he thought.

『 Technically from the sincerity behind the fruit. But the financial outcome is broadly similar. Yes. 』

’Why didn’t you tell me this from the start,’ Kai thought.

『 Because if you had known, every investment would have carried the shadow of expectation. The system cannot function on calculated generosity. It requires the real thing. 』 『 You had to spend the money not knowing you would get it back. 』 『 You did. Repeatedly. Without hesitation. 』 『 That is why the protocol is now unlocked. 』

Kai sat with that for a long time.

He thought about the pharmacy. The forty percent he’d paid without flinching while doing quiet math about food in his head. The porridge this morning. The mandarins he bought with coins from his jacket because Mira tapped his arm once and he didn’t want to make it into a moment.

None of it had been calculated.

He just did what needed doing.

’The returns are pending breakthroughs,’ Kai thought. ’They haven’t paid out yet.’

『 Correct. The investment is logged. The return waits for her progress. The more she heals — the more she grows — the greater what comes back to you. 』 『 Think of it this way, Host. 』 『 Every step Shira takes toward recovery is worth more than any salary. 』 『 Every sound Mira makes with her voice is worth more than any delivery route. 』 『 Invest in them. That is the only financial strategy you need. 』

Kai looked at the ceiling for a long time.

He pressed his palm to the couch.

Shira. Still awake. Lying in the dark, thinking about something.

Mira. The lighter stillness. The weight that had shifted.

’I know,’ Kai thought. Not at the system. Just to the wall.

’I know.’

He put his phone away and closed his eyes.

Tomorrow he would book the rehabilitation clinic.

Tonight he would let them sleep.

He was almost under when his phone buzzed.

He ignored it.

It buzzed again. Then again. Then three times in quick succession.

He picked it up with one eye open.

Banking notifications. Stacking faster than he could read them.

He sat up.

He opened the app.

The number on the screen stopped him completely. He read it. He closed the app. He opened it again.

Same number.

His phone kept buzzing in his hand ,notification after notification arriving in a cascade, each one a line item from the W.I.A. returning exactly what he’d spent, multiplied by exactly what the system had promised.
